The Best Features to Have in an Iron

Nearly gone are the days when you had to run to the dry cleaners to get your nicest clothes steam cleaned and pressed. With today’s affordable irons possessing more of the special steam tools that make them effective at ironing out all your wrinkles, you can treat delicate fabrics from your own home.

Inexpensive irons, some as low as $25, now compete with high-end models in offering the best iron features. These special qualities greatly improve an iron’s performance, efficiency, and safety.

Stable heel

When you set the iron on its heel to adjust a garment, you don’t want it to wobble or tip over, causing a spill or an accidental burn. Irons should be heavy enough that they rest solidly on its base.

Weight

An iron shouldn’t be so heavy that it’s hard to lug around, but you don’t want it too lightweight either. If it’s just heavy enough, the iron can smooth out tough wrinkles in thick fabrics and is less likely to be knocked over accidentally.

Temperature indicator

After you set the temperature on your iron, it shouldn’t take much longer than a minute to heat up, and when it does, it’s convenient to have an indicator light or audible alert go off to let you know the iron is ready.

Retractable cord

A cord should be positioned so it doesn’t get in the way of your ironing or snag on the clothes you have set on the ironing board. Wrapping it up for storage is also a key consideration. Some irons now feature a retractable cord. With the push of a button, the cord automatically winds itself into an internal compartment.

Grooved tip

Ironing around buttons, along seams, and in tight corners can be challenging if the iron’s tip isn’t grooved or narrow enough.

Soleplate material

Many irons claim to possess a nonstick soleplate. Really, the iron’s ability to glide easily depends a lot on the soleplate material and the type of fabric it’s ironing. Stainless steel and ceramic are common materials. There’s generally little difference between them when it comes to heat distribution, durability, and scratch resistance, but stainless steel is easier to clean and ceramic is less likely to have fabrics cling to it at high temperatures. Aluminum is typically found on the least expensive models.

Transparent, easy-to-fill water tank

A transparent water tank will let you know at a glance when it’s time to refill it. Get an iron with a large enough tank, say at least 10 ounces, and you’ll be spared performing that task very often. With a removable tank, filling it should be a simple matter of taking it to the sink and opening the hole cover. Just be aware that some covers that slide or click into place may not be entirely effective at preventing leaks.

Irons that accept regular tap water, not distilled water, are nice, too.

Self-cleaning feature

Irons typically develop scaly buildup in the vents from the calcium and magnesium particles in the water. A self-cleaning feature loosens these mineral deposits so they can be flushed out. However, if this feature loses its effectiveness, it’s just as easy to use the burst-of-steam feature and wipe out the residue with a cotton swab.

3-way auto shut-off

Today’s irons are designed with safety in mind. Apparently enough people were forgetful and walked away while the iron was running, causing accidental fabric burns or, worse, fires. Now most models have an auto shut-off feature. These irons shut off after a short period of inactivity, whether they’re resting flat, sitting upright, or tipped over. While this feature may be essential for safety reasons, it’s not universally loved by users who dislike having to continually turn the iron back on.

Controls on the handle

For the easiest access, buttons and dials should be at the top of the iron handle, not below it where your fingers can accidentally graze the controls. Having the controls at your fingertips makes the ironing process easier and faster. A digital or LCD display is convenient and nice-looking, but it’s not an essential feature.

Steam output

A steam iron should, obviously, produce enough steam to smooth out wrinkly clothes. Irons measure their steam output in grams per minute. Besides delivering a steady stream of steam, irons should have variable steam control, allowing you to raise or lower the steam output depending on the type of fabric you’re ironing. Other useful steam tools:
A burst-of-steam button conveniently blasts stubborn wrinkles with extra heat and moisture to smooth them into place.
Vertical steaming allows you to give garments, drapes, and curtains a fresh cleaning without breaking out the ironing board.
An anti-drip system, common on most irons, prevents water leaks on your clothes when you set the steam on a low level.

Fabric guide

If an iron comes with multiple fabric settings, it should also include a fabric guide printed in plain view on the iron. Silk and wool generally take less heat than cotton and linen.

The Advantages of Vertical Steam Ironing

Ironing clothes is a time-consuming, tedious chore. If you don’t have the time to set up the ironing board but you want your garments, curtains, drapes, or linens to look and smell fresh, then the vertical steam feature on your iron can do the trick. It effectively smooths out wrinkles and creases and clears away mustiness.

Here’s a guide to using vertical steam with your iron. If you’re not sure whether your iron has this feature, refer to the user’s manual or look for an icon with an iron held in the vertical position with a cloud of steam coming out.

  • Fill the water tank to the maximum line and turn the iron on to heat.
  • Hang up the garments on a hanger or over a bar.
  • Set the fabric dial to the correct setting, depending on what type of material you’re steam ironing.
  • When the iron is hot enough, hold it vertically a few inches from the fabric.
  • While pulling the cloth tight, run the iron up and down and push the steam button continually.

With vertical steam, you’re saved the trouble of setting up a cumbersome ironing board, and you can quickly work out wrinkles in your clothes just before you head out the door.

Best Smartphone Accessories

The Best Features to Have in a Smartphone

Nearly everyone these days carries around a smartphone like an additional appendage. It’s no wonder. These hi-tech phones have nearly as many functions as a PC, and they’re lightweight and easy to flip out of a pocket to perform any function, whether it’s searching for a pizza parlor or video chatting with a faraway friend.

So if you’re looking for a smartphone, it’s worth going over some of the best features you’ll probably want in your model. The more fancy features you have, of course, the higher the price.

Camera

Most smartphones have a rear camera with 5 to 8 megapixels; some offer as many as 12 MP. Some smartphones have an additional camera in the front that lets you view yourself as you take a self-portrait shot or participate in a video chat. If you plan to use your phone to document important moments in your life in place of a digital camera, then look for a smartphone with great photo clarity and editing options.

Wi-Fi Connectivity

Smartphones with 3G, or wi-fi connectivity, allow you to browse the web wherever there’s Internet access. Whether you’re using your phone for work or pleasure, there’s no denying how convenient it is to pull up your email, look up the weather, or watch YouTube videos.

GPS

So many people are dependent on GPS these days that it’s hard to find your way around without it. Wherever you are, a smartphone’s GPS system can let you search for nearby shops or restaurants or show you your way in unfamiliar cities.

Large Screen with Great Resolution

If you want to stream videos or view photos on your smartphone, then you may wish to spring for a fancy model with a large screen and high resolution. Screens are measured diagonally, and some of the bigger ones are well over 4 inches. Remember that the larger the screen, the larger the device will be, so view phones in person to decide whether it’s too bulky to carry around comfortably.

Applications

While smartphones are highly functional devices capable of organizing your contacts and keeping track of your email, they’re also cool gadgets, or grown-up toys. You may soon find yourself hooked on apps and games that help pass the time. If these features are important to you, then consider phones with a wide selection of apps to download.

Tablets Buying Guide

How to Choose the Tablet that’s right for You

Screen Size/Portability
This one is obvious. How large a screen do you need or want. A few considerations for this category might be:

  1. What will I be carrying my Tablet in and Where? Will a 10” Tablet fit comfortably?
  2. How much typing will I be doing on the keyboard and what size keyboard fits my needs best?
  3. What will be my primary purpose for the tablet? E-mail? Surfing? Apps?

Android, Apple, or Other
This has become one of the hottest debates in the Tablet world. Tablet users must decide which Apps they want to be able to choose from. Reputedly Android and Apple have the best choices for Apps so this is a consideration in making your decision. If you do not plan on accessing or downloading many Apps and the Tablet will be used mainly for portable Internet and e-mail then you can get better prices with Tablets like the Nook or Blackberry for your money.

Sound Quality
A much overlooked feature, sound quality is important to many people. Will you be hooking ear bud speakers up to the tablet and listening to music constantly or accessing videos online? Sound quality should not be overlooked.

Processing Power
How fast does the tablet touchscreen respond to your requests and how fast does it load pages, Apps and programs? Processing power is determined by the quality of the operating system built in the Tablet and is an important determinant in speed.

Storage/Memory
Are you planning to download music, videos, pictures and movies to the tablet? These all take memory and storage capacity. Price is usually closely associated with how much memory the tablet contains. For instance the iPad has 3 price levels depending upon how much memory you want. However, there are discounts to be had in this area such as the new pricing on Blackberry Playbook tablets with lots of memory.

Price/Value Considerations
Obviously this is an important feature for many and is usually determined by storage capacity, functionality, design, weight, depth, processing power, popularity and brand. Out of favor Tablets may be purchased at a deep discount, so this may be the best way to search if this is a primary factor for you.

Features like Cameras
Do you plan on using your tablets camera function often. Tablet make it easy to take pictures, view them at a considerable size and send them – all in one device.

Battery Life
Obviously we all enjoy more battery life in our devices so this feature is obvious.

Washing Machines Buying Guide

Washing Machine Manufacturers: Buying By Brand

As you research online and visit the appliance section in stores in the hunt for a new washer, you have probably noticed the variety of brands touting the best, most
reliable models. If you’re wondering which brands offer washers of consistent quality, durability, efficiency, and affordability, or even if you already have a brand you
swear by, it’s worthwhile to know each major company’s strengths and faults.

Whirlpool

Whirlpool has one of the most recognizable, iconic names because it’s been around so long
and it consistently offers quality appliances at an affordable price. Many public Laundromats rely on them because they’re built to withstand a lot of use. Most models carry an Energy Star rating, which means they are more efficient, and drum capacity is becoming consistently larger. Whirlpool is following other competitors’ technological advances, introducing steam and allergy-removing cycles to some of its higher end products. Whirlpool typically gets average to favorable ratings; with a wide selection covering all price ranges, it’s a durable, trusted brand.

GE

GE has fought hard to be known as a “green” company, earning Energy Star ratings for most
of its models. It offers many convenient features, like the automatic detergent dispenser, which stores and releases many months’ worth of detergent in the correct amount. Its machines typically have large capacities and smart cycles that determine the correct temperature and amount of water to use. GE has experimented with different colors than just plain neutrals, so if you like bright or unusual colors for your appliances, GE may have just what you want. This brand is generally reliable, but as with any company has the occasional low performer.

Samsung

Samsung is newer at washing machines than some of its competitors, but it’s quickly established itself as an innovative company offering advanced technology. Samsung’s known for leading the way in vibration reduction technology and using silver to kill bacteria in sanitizing washes. Its less expensive models are reliably efficient and effective washers, and its higher end machines have a plethora of special features that make doing laundry simple and convenient. This brand consistently receives top ratings. If there are any common complaints about Samsung, it’s that it takes longer to have skilled service workers come to handle repairs.

LG

LG models are consistent high performers and run in the $800 to $1700 range. Its top loaders and front loaders have generous drum capacities and feature many innovative technologies, like the wash/rinse optimizer and an allergen-removing cycle. LG’s claim to fame is that it introduced and perfected the steam cleaning cycle. Like Samsung, LG receives steady top ratings, which is why it has some of the most expensive models on the market. Be aware also that its wash cycles take longer to complete.

Kenmore

Sears’ Kenmore brand has been a top contender since its introduction in 1927. It offers trusted models from bare-bones top loaders at $320 to advanced front loaders at $1600. Consumer reviews consistently praise Kenmore’s top performance, efficiency, and reduced noise levels. Its models are typically sleek and attractive, and even lower end washers have large capacities. Because Kenmore can be found only at Sears, it saves you some shopping time. However, it also means you’re less likely to find heavily discounted models as they don’t have to compete with other retailers. Overall, Kenmore is a well-regarded brand with years of trustworthy performance.

Maytag

Maytag is owned by Whirlpool and has come to be known as a durable brand with reasonable
prices, ranging from $400 to $1700. Maytag produces washers for the commercial sector, so lots of the durability factors also apply to consumer models. For large families and people with pets or allergies, Maytag’s large capacities and allergen-removing cycle are big pluses. Additionally, they’re highly efficient, with some models running at just 140 kWh/year. The main downside with this company is its models are quite expensive, with only the top-tier washers offering the best features like steam. Over time, some of its less expensive washers will integrate more advanced technologies.

Frigidaire

Frigidaire has been in the appliance industry for almost 100 years and offers quality washers at competitive prices. Its front loaders barely exceed $1000, which is refreshingly low compared to other brands. Frigidaire washers are sleek and available in a wide range of colors. While they are more basic and don’t offer all the latest bells and whistles, they are rated highly for cleaning and holding up over the years. While Frigidaire models don’t have as much capacity as some other brands, they’re known for being very efficient and reliable.

There are several other washing machine brands available on the market. Some, like Bosch and Electrolux, have been popular in Europe for years and are just now gaining recognition in the United States. Whichever brand you decide to go with, be sure to read reviews for individual models to be aware of its strengths and potential problems.

Push Mower Buying Guide

A Guide to Buying a Lawn Mower

Take a look at your yard. Is it flat, hilly, or rocky? Does the grass regularly grow high? You know your yard better than anyone, so you can make informed decisions when selecting a new lawn mower.

The first thing you should ask: Do I need a mower I can ride or push? The answer lies in the size of your property. A lawn less than half an acre is sufficiently small for a push or self-propelled mower. If it’s bigger than half an acre, then you can save yourself a lot of time and energy by using a ride mower.

Understanding the engine

Gas mowers and electric or cordless mowers specify the motor’s power in different ways. For gas, it’s typically:

  • Horsepower, which refers to the power the engine produces.
  • Torque, which measures how much horsepower reaches the blades.
  • CC, or cubic centimeters, which determines the motor’s power by the cylinder’s displacement volume.

While manufacturers will boast of a mower’s high horsepower, that doesn’t always mean the mower will have the greatest cutting performance. A high torque or cc are better indicators.

Electric and cordless mowers measure their power in amps, watts, or volts. To compare an electric motor’s power to a gas motor’s, you can divide the wattage by 746 to get the equivalent horsepower. Not sure how to get the wattage? Just multiply the volts by the amps.

Gas mowers are also broken down into two-cycle and four-cycle engines (also called two- or four-stroke). Two-cycle engines, which require a mixture of gas and oil, are typically more powerful and start better in cold temperatures, but they also emit more pollution. Four-cycle engines are large, run cleaner, and are ideal for large properties.

Bagging vs. Mulching

Is it better to bag or mulch the grass? It depends on the climate and the condition of your lawn. Fertile, wet lawns can get clogged and clumpy if you leave mulch behind. In this situation, it’s better to bag the grass clippings. However, if your soil is dry it could benefit from the nutrient-rich mulch.

Some lawn mowers also discharge clippings from the side. Honestly, this is not the most ideal mower function unless you don’t mind raking up grass after you mow the yard.

As far as design goes, mowers with rear bags are preferable to side bags. The rear bags will generally hold more clippings and won’t make the mower wider and bulky.

Wheel size and strength

The wheels on the lawn mower get the most wear and tear because they’ll be running over rocks and roots. A large wheel size improves the mower’s durability and makes it easier to maneuver over rough terrain.

How much exercise do you want? Push vs. self-propelled mowers

Unless you have a small, flat lawn, self-propelled mowers are generally more convenient, if more expensive. Push mowers are lighter, but that’s before the bag fills up with clippings.

Start-up

While electric starts are supposed to save you the hassle of pulling a start cord, modern recoil start mowers have improved the start-up process and don’t cost extra.

Deck material

You can find quality mowers with steel, plastic, or aluminum decks, or housings for the motor. All are acceptable. Plastic is generally durable enough and doesn’t rust like metal. However, steel is usually thinner, meaning you can get up close to fence edges and not need the trimmer afterward.

Lifespan

With proper maintenance and care, your lawn mower can last for years. Still, look for a model with a decent warranty of at least two years. Some manufacturers offer a lifetime warranty on the deck.

Electric Ranges Buying Guide

Best Features to Look For in a Gas or Electric Range

Some of the most expensive range models highlight their many special features and design qualities. It’s your job to know which features are truly useful or necessary in your kitchen and which are extraneous. Getting the most out of your range is a simple matter of determining which features are worth the extra cost. Here’s a guide to some of the range factors you should consider while doing your shopping.

Convection oven

Many top models, both gas and electric, offer convection heating in their ovens. If you like the way convection ovens seal in flavor and give food a crispy texture, you’ll appreciate this feature. Additionally, it cuts down on baking time—always a handy benefit.

Digital display

Found on all but the most basic ranges, a digital display shows the cook time, temperature, and other helpful information. This display isn’t imperative, but it’s a convenience many people find worth the price.

Dual ovens

If you frequently bake several dishes at once, you should look into a range with two ovens. One is typically larger than the other, but you can rearrange the racks in either oven to maximize your baking space and prepare two or more food items simultaneously.

Burner heat

A range should have at least one burner or element with a minimum of 15,000 BTUs. At this high heat, you can boil, sear, and fry foods efficiently and quickly, even in large quantities.

Hot surface indicator light

If you have a smooth cooktop surface, it’s especially important to have a hot surface indicator lest you unwittingly burn your hand.

Control lockout

Some electric models have a button that disables the console after you’ve set the controls. If the control panel is located at the front of the range instead of the back, you should spring for this option. If you have children with wandering fingers, a control lock is especially useful and safe.

Simmer burner

For sauces that require delicate heating, you may be happiest with a low-power burner specially designed for simmering. However, most ranges can handle simmering well without the low-power feature.

Recessed cooktop

Cleaning up spills is much easier with a lip around the cooktop to prevent drips.

Multiple rack positions

Four or five rack positions are the most ideal for fitting a variety of pans, from narrow to large, into the oven. Whatever your oven capacity, you want to maximize the space to make baking more efficient.

Delay start

This is a feature that is convenient only to an extent. It’s never advisable to leave an oven on unattended, and you want to leave food sitting cold in the oven for only a short period of time.

Coils vs. smoothtops

With an electric range, you’ll find either coils or a smoothtop. Coils are more durable but take extra scrubbing to clean; they’re found almost exclusively on the least expensive models. A smoothtop is relatively easy to clean with a specially designed detergent; however, it’s more susceptible to cracks and other damage should a heavy pot fall on it. Smoothtops on many top models have expanding elements to heat up either small or large pans.

Warming drawer

Some models offer a warming drawer to keep dishes from cooling or drying out. It’s a useful feature when you’re cooking a lot of dishes for a party or a big Thanksgiving meal.

Toaster Oven Buying Guide

Best Features to Have in a Toaster Oven

Toaster ovens are incredibly versatile in the baking, broiling, and toasting functions they provide. Not only can you toast bread, bagels, and waffles, but you can make a panini, roast a chicken, or bake a pizza. However, your satisfaction with a toaster oven depends on several factors. Before making a purchase, consider these features that make a toaster oven worth its cost.

Capacity

Consider the oven’s overall size and its interior capacity. If a toaster oven takes up a great deal of counter space, it should have a very generous capacity wide enough to hold a pizza and tall enough to fit a chicken or roast. Don’t be cheated on oven space if you’re paying top dollar.

Easy controls

Don’t pick a toaster oven with overly complex controls. A cluttered control panel is overwhelming and frustrating to use. Good models work just fine with just three dials that control cook function, temperature, and cook time.

Racks

The best toaster ovens have a rack that automatically slides out when you open the door. This feature makes it easier to remove food without sticking your hand in the oven and touching the hot racks.

Crumb tray

A completely removable tray is the easiest to clean. However, crumb trays that slide out of the front are pretty standard and are better than those that come out the back.

Beeps and Shut-offs

If you have to leave the room even for a short time when you’re cooking with the toaster oven, you want a model with a loud signal beep. Also, look for a toaster oven that automatically shuts off after a certain time to prevent burning or fire accidents.

Interior material

No one wants to spend time scrubbing tough, baked-on grease in the toaster oven. Certain materials, like porcelain, are easier to clean. If a baking pan or broil rack is included, make sure it’s the nonstick variety.

Convection heating

If you expect to bake a lot with your toaster oven, check out models with convection heating. Fans circulate hot air throughout the oven, making foods bake faster, more evenly, and with a crispy outer texture.

Dryers Buying Guide

The Best Features to Have in a Dryer

As you shop for a new dryer, you may be overwhelmed by the various cycle options and special features that different brands offer. The challenge becomes knowing which features are truly useful and which are snazzy but not truly necessary. To get the best value with your purchase, do not pay extra for features you won’t use. Here’s a rundown of the best dryer features you should look for.

Moisture sensors

This is a must-have feature if you want your dryer to work the most efficiently. Traditional dryers estimate the correct drying time based on the temperature of the air in the drum. Sometimes their estimates are a bit off, leaving clothes still damp or shrunk and sizzling.

New models have fixed this problem with sensors in the drum that detect moisture levels in the clothes and adjust the temperature and time of the cycle accordingly. The dryer shuts off automatically when the clothes are dry, which means no energy is wasted and your clothes aren’t subjected to overheating, which damages fabric.

Interior light

A light inside the drum is so useful when you’re digging around for every last sock, so you’d be surprised that some models don’t include it.

Permanent press

A perma-press option gives your clothes a cool-down period at the end of a cycle. This feature is handy because it reduces wrinkles, which can mean less ironing time for you. It also protects your colorful clothes from fading.

Adjustable temperature

Different fabrics require different temperatures to dry properly without damage. High temperatures are fine for white, preshrunk items, but lower temperatures should be used for your delicate items and colorful garments.

Extended tumble

Say you put a load in the dryer and then you have to leave the house. You don’t want the clothes to sit in the dryer getting all wrinkled. An extended tumble feature periodically tosses the clothes around without heat just to keep them fresh and de-wrinkled.

Lint filter indicator

If you’re bad about remembering to clean the lint filter, an indicator is a handy feature that will remind you. A clogged filter greatly impedes the drying process and poses a fire risk.

Drying rack

A convenient accessory that you attach to the inside of the drum, a drying rack keeps clunky items like sneakers from tumbling around in the dryer.

Digital SLR Cameras Buying Guide

Advantages of a Digital SLR over a Point and Shoot

For the serious or professional photographer, a digital SLR camera has a number of distinct advantages over the basic point and shoot digital camera. While they are heavy, expensive, and complex in operation, SLR cameras are growing increasingly popular because manufacturers are striving to make some models more affordable and easy to learn.

If you have an advanced knowledge of photography and camera work, then you should consider upgrading to an SLR for the following reasons:

Higher picture quality

An SLR camera has a greater ISO, which is the degree of sensitivity the sensors have to light when the shutter opens. Its larger sensor captures images with a higher pixel count and the fast ISO reduces the noise, or graininess, in pictures taken in low light.

For instance, if you’re indoors at night and you tried to take a picture at 1600 ISO with a point and shoot camera, the image would be very noisy and hard to distinguish. An SLR handles high ISO levels better to produce crisper, brighter images even in unfavorable lighting conditions.

Interchangeable lenses and other accessories

While a basic digital camera with a good optical zoom gets a clear close-up shot of subjects far away, an SLR has even more adaptable functions. With a variety of different lenses, you can get effective wide-angle shots and super long focal lengths with incredible depth of field. Other accessories you can use include filters and separate flash tools. In almost any situation, you can adjust your SLR to get the optimal picture quality.

Optical viewfinder

A major way that SLR cameras differ from basic digital cameras is that they have an optical viewfinder that helps you arrange the frame and focus before you take the shot. It greatly improves your ability to take perfect pictures because what you see in the viewfinder is pretty close to what you’ll see in the final image.

Fast operation

On the whole, SLR cameras are speedier than point and shoot cameras at setting up shots and taking multiple shots without much shutter lag.

Manual controls

A primary reason professional photographers use SLR cameras is that they give users the most manual control over the set up. Point and shoot cameras are good for beginners because with an auto mode they take care of everything for the user—the focus, lighting, and exposure. SLR cameras presume that the photographer knows how to do everything manually to get the best shot.

Long-term value

Basic digital cameras are updated at least once a year. Because they’re not vastly expensive, that fact may not matter much to the average user. But serious photographers like knowing that the digital SLR they purchase will retain its value for years. It’s a solid investment, and the high-quality lenses they buy will also be worth it because they can attach to other models of the same brand.
