GE vs. Whirlpool: Top Load Washing Machine Comparison
The GE GTWS8450DWS and the Whirlpool Cabrio WTW8200YW are two highly ranked top loading washing machines. The GE model is $1,069, while the Whirlpool model is $894. That is a considerable difference, but the GE washing machine offers a slightly larger capacity of 4.8 cubic feet. The Whirlpool model has 4.6 cubic feet. Both are extra-large drums, but let’s see how the other features compare.
Both models are Energy Star rated, guaranteed to save you money on your monthly energy bill. The Whirlpool model has the extra feature of an Eco Monitor that lets you track the efficiency of each wash cycle. Another eco-friendly option is the EcoBoost, which uses colder water and more spin to cut down on energy. We’ll give the Whirlpool props for giving consumers these options.
Both machines are incredibly efficient. The GE model includes technology that “communicates” to the dryer to preset the optimal drying time. With the high spins of both models, in fact, you can expect to cut down on your drying time, further saving energy.
The GE GTWS8450DWS has snazzy features and technology—such as steam—and a greater drum capacity. But you have to weigh whether that’s worth the extra $175. The Whirlpool Cabrio WTW8200YW is no slouch either when it comes to performance and energy efficiency.

Knife Storage Tips
The last thing you want to do is keep all your sharp knives—chefs, santoku, filleting, paring, etc.—is throw them all together in a drawer. Not only does it look untidy and fail to protect the blades, but it’s like sticking your hand in a land mine to fish one out.
Some knives come with a protective sheath, including the kind with sharpening teeth that keep the edge sharp. But the most convenient solution is to look for a knife block. Blocks are now available for purchase separate from knife sets. They look nice on the counter and make it fast and easy to pull out whichever knife you need. Some have slots for over 20 knives and include space for scissors and steak knives.
When you place your knives in the block, be sure to slide them in with the edge facing up. This position prevents the edge from going dull.
Other options
- Of course, if you can’t afford to give up the counter space, there are under-counter, in-drawer, and wall-mounted storage units that also help keep the knives organized.
- If you have a really nice set of knives that you’re proud to show off, there are attractive knife magnets that either sit on the counter or hang on the wall.
- For transporting knives, individual sheaths work great, as do knife rolls or cases. Professional cooks use these methods to take their knives with them wherever they go.

Bread Machine Buying Guide
So you’ve decided you want to experience the joys of making homemade bread and smelling it bake in your kitchen—now you need to select a bread machine. It’s nice to know that there is a wide selection of quality models ranging from only $50 up to $300 or more.
Functions and programs
Which bread machine you choose depends on what you expect from the machine:
- Do you want the ability to experiment with various types of bread, such as whole wheat, multigrain, gluten-free, sweet, baguette, French, Italian, or banana bread?
- Are you interested in using a breadmaker to bake cakes or prepare dough for pizza and pasta?
- Would you like a machine that also makes non-bread items like meatloaf and jam?
Most bread machine models today come pre-programmed with baking modes or settings that allow you to make a wide variety of breads. You just need to follow the recipe and instructions for mixing the flour, yeast, and other ingredients to get mouthwatering results.
Design and controls
Bread machines don’t differ wildly in style, but you may find that you prefer one with a large viewing window and a bright LCD display that highlights your programming selections. Even if a bread machine doesn’t possess a window, that shouldn’t disqualify it. Some people argue that a bread machine offers more even heating and crispier crusts without one.
Size and shape
How large is the family you’re baking for? If you’re single or one of a couple, you can get by with a small model that makes a 1-pound loaf, which yields about 8 slices. For a larger family, you’ll probably want a model that makes loaves up to 1.5, 2, or 2.5 pounds. A 2.5-pound loaf provides roughly 20 slices—more than enough to satisfy a family for several days.
Whether a loaf comes out horizontal or vertical doesn’t affect the taste, but you may have a preference for one or the other. A tall slice from a vertical loaf may be more difficult to fit in the toaster.
You also need to think of size in terms of the machine’s footprint. If you’re going with a big bread machine, will you be content to let it take up a lot of counter space, or will you okay with lugging it out of a pantry for each use? Smaller models make smaller loaves, but they’re also easily portable and don’t take up much more space than a toaster.
Noise
The kneading and baking a bread machine performs is a very involved process, but you probably don’t want a machine that rattles and dances across the counter. Check up on reviews to get an idea of how much noise it makes.
Cleaning
As with any kitchen appliance, cleaning the bread machine is the least fun part. However, if the machine is equipped with nonstick, removable parts, the task becomes much easier. Some models have a detachable lid that gives you better access to the inside cavity. Note which models have dishwasher-safe parts and which require hand-washing.
Instructions and recipes
You’ll be hard-pressed to find a bread machine that doesn’t come with an instruction manual and recipes. If possible, browse through the manual before making a purchase to see how comprehensive the directions are. Do they walk you through each baking mode? Do they tell you how long each kneading cycle lasts? Do they offer clear recipes for a wide variety of breads, cakes, and jams?
If the manual leaves something to be desired, there are plenty of bread making books available that are all-encompassing. Beth Hensperger’s “The Bread Lover’s Bread Machine Cookbook” is a widely popular choice, featuring over 300 step-by-step recipes.

Frigidaire vs. Samsung: Front Load Washing Machine Comparison
The Frigidaire Affinity Series FAFS4073N and the Samsung WF210ANW are two front loading washing machines ranked highly for their performance and capacity. They are also similar in price. We will compare these two washing machines in other qualities to see how they stack up against each other.
As far as capacity goes, the two washing machines are close in size, but the Frigidaire model is a tad larger at 3.8 cubic feet compared to the Samsung model’s 3.5 cubic feet. That’s not a huge difference, but it could make it easier to wash bedding and other bulky items.
The Frigidaire model also comes out ahead for energy efficiency. It’s not only Energy Star rated, it’s also rated the most efficient washing machine of 2012 by Energy Star. The Samsung model is Energy Star compliant. Efficiency is important not only for the environment, but also because it saves you money on your energy bill and requires less detergent to get clothes clean.
Both models are similar in vibration reduction, but the Frigidaire model has 10 wash cycles compared to the Samsung model’s 6. Additionally, the Frigidaire model comes in 3 color options: white, red, or silver. Color may not be the greatest deciding factor, but it makes a difference if you’re tired of plain white appliances.
Ultimately, the Frigidaire Affinity Series FAFS4073N offers more than the Samsung WF210ANW in terms of features, energy efficiency, and capacity.

Best Front Load Washing Machine
Top Rated Front Load Washing Machines 2025
Front load washing machines have their advantages over top loading washers. What on Earth could they be might you ask? One of the first things to note is the extra work space that that top of the washer offers. Instead of having to keep the top clear, a front load model lets you iron or fold clothes on the top. There is also the matter of efficiency. A front load washing machine only uses about half of the water a top loader uses. Think about all the water saved after a year of washing clothes. We looked at some of the best front load washers on the market today and rated them based on the following points:
1. The number of cycles for cleaning different types of fabrics
2. Speed of the wash cycle
3. Quality and build of the unit and components
4. Drum capcity
5. Look and style of the washer, colors offered, etc.

Best Holiday TV Deals/Sales

3) Resolution
4) Absence of fancy features (like 3D and Internet TV that add to price)
5) ManufacturersWarranty time length
6) Parts and Repair Availability
Panasonic VIERA TC-P50U50 |
$699 |
This is a lower line plasma from Panasonic but still quality oriented. It’s going to give you the best picture quality of this list, but is better suited for medium to darker room lighting. It is on a little over 2.55 inches in depth.
Prices
|
Samsung PN60E550 |
$1279 |
Now for a 60 inch TV you do want that higher 1080p resolution for sure. This plasma from Samsung is priced exceptionally well and will give you a great home theater type picture experience in dark to low light rooms. It has extras as well like Internet TV capability.
Prices
|
Vizio E3D420VX |
$477 |
While on this list we are trying to keep the cost down and not offer too many extras this TV is 3D capable (passive 3D) and has Vizio’s Internet TV Apps and a special Gaming mode all for a less than $500 buck price point.

LG 47CS570 |
$630 |
This is a great value with a higher 120Hz refresh rate to stop some of that judder during fast motion. We felt one of these should be represented on this list. The TV is lit with traditional LCD lighting rather than LED. It’s also a very nice looking TV.

Toshiba 32C120U |

TCL LE43FHDF3300 |
$420 |
TCL may not be a brand you know well but the TVs are reliable and come with a 2 year warranty. This is an LED backlit unit has has a unique modern look to it. There is more inconsistency from the edge lit LEDs but also more brightness.

LG 50PA4500 |
$548 |
This is the big bro to the 42” LG listed above still with the plasma technology and 720p resolution. The price is smoking for 50 inches and there is a new Triple HXD video processing video chipset to smooth that picture.
Prices
|
LG 42PA4500 |
Dimensions 38.2 x 2.3 x 23.7 inches |
OK a plasma is a must consider in the 42 inch size range. The prices are too good to pass up and though LG typically does not get much consideration in plasma, how can you lose at this price point. This plasma has hot looks to boot, with only .55 inch frame cabinet. The picture is not as bright for daytime viewing.
Prices
|
LG 32CS460 |
$270 |
OK it’s not 1080p resolution but try to beat the $270 price tag. This little 32 inch unit has clean lines and solid performance even with HD signals. On a TV this size I doubt you will even notice the difference when you have that HD signal pumped into it. It’s a traditional LCD which you might think is not good but they actually have a more uniform color performance than LED backlit TVs.
Prices
|
TCL L40FHDP60 |
$329 |
For $400 this traditional LCD has lots to offer. It’s not the best looking TV in the market but 40 inches is just a whole lot bigger than what you can get in other brands for $400. It has an anti-glare screen finish otherwise called a matte finish which somewhat inhibits clarity.

3 Steps Finding the Right Black Friday
Holiday TV Deal Special
How to find the right sale special and not be fooled
People have the perception that it’s easy to find a great deal on black friday or during the holidays but nothing could be farther from the truth. Stores know that bargain hunters abound with cash to spend, so there are lots of tricks to get you to release those funds such as:
- Bait and Switch
Stores try to bait you in with that seemingly too good to be true TV price $399 for a 40” LCD TV. Right? Then you get there and, ups, all the $399 off-brand TVs on sale are gone. Sold out. So they steer you toward that “brand” name unit they have great margins in instead. - Watch out for Off-brands
Lot’s of the seemingly great deals promoted are of brands you’ve never heard of (Handspree? Sceptre?) and the quality is just not there. Steer toward your trusted brands and you will have better reliability in general and also be able to get it repaired two years down the road because there are parts available. Even though I have recommended a couple of TCL TVs on this list they both come with a 2 year warranty on labor. - Consider your room situation
Whether or not you get a brighter TV for a brightly lit room is important. It’s good to know a plasma is OK for a darker low light room. Consider the perfect size that you need. Thinking more about exactly what you need will prevent you from “pulling the trigger” on an impulse buy just because it’s on sale.

KitchenAid vs. Panasonic: Comparing Convection Microwaves
By Brittany Rowland
Convection microwaves combine the convenience of microwave cooking with the efficiency of an oven. The KitchenAid Pro Line Series KHMC1857XSP, which costs $746.10, and the Panasonic NN-CD989S, which is $545.99, are two popular convection microwaves on the market. Let’s compare some of their features.
Price-wise, the Panasonic model is more wallet-friendly. It has a 1.5 cubic foot capacity, however, which is less than the 1.8 cubic feet of the KitchenAid microwave. If space is important feature to you, then the KitchenAid model has a slight edge.
The KitchenAid model is an over-the-range microwave with a hidden ventilation hood, which is definitely a bonus when it comes to keeping the microwave from becoming too hot. The Pansonic model works with inverter technology to distribute heat evenly without burning. It can either sit on the countertop or be installed with a trim kit.
Ultimately, the extra cost may be the deciding factor between these two models. The KitchenAid model is slightly larger, but it’s also quite costlier than the Panasonic NN-CD989S.

Comparing Convection Ovens: Breville BOV800XL vs. Calphalon Electric Extra Large Digital Convection Oven
By Brittany Rowland
The Breville BOV800XL and the Calphalon Electric Extra Large Digital Convection Oven are top-rated models on the market. They are comparable in price: the Breville model is $249, compared to the $200 Calphalon model.
As for capacity, the two models are evenly matched with a vast 13-inch capacity. That’s enough space for a large pizza or six slices of toast. Comparing the two convection ovens comes down to features. The Breville BOV800XL boasts Element IQ technology that senses where and when heat is needed; the result is evenly cooked food with no hot spots or burnt edges. While the Calphalon oven does not have this feature, it still has effective baking, broiling, and toasting capabilities.
Another nice feature of the Breville oven is the slide-out rack that makes it easier to pull out the food without burning your hands. The Calphalon oven boasts a crumb tray that is accessible from the front, which makes cleaning duties easier.
Ultimately, both ovens are attractive and effective models. The advanced technology of the Breville BOV800XL gives it a slight edge, but it’s up to you to decide whether it’s worth the additional $50.

3 Tips for Maintaining a Dutch Oven
A Dutch oven, or a large covered pot of some heavy material like cast iron, is a versatile tool for cooking casseroles, stews, roasts, and other big meals. The thick-walled cooking vessel has been a time-tested tool for several centuries. While the old-fashioned kind used for hundreds of years featured thick, sturdy legs to hold the pot over the fire, today’s modern style usually has a flat, smooth base to fit in our modern kitchen appliances.
Dutch ovens are ideal for slowly cooking, boiling, or roasting foods. They can be used in the oven, on a stovetop, or even at campfires. Sitting over the hot coals, campfire Dutch ovens can bake bread, pizza, and biscuits.
Care and maintenance
pDutch ovens are typically heavy and sturdy, but they still require proper care to help them last a long time. The material it’s made of affects how you clean it.
- If it’s made of plain cast iron, then you should wash it with boiling water and a brush, using as little soap as possible. Treat it with cooking oil to prevent rusting, and let it dry thoroughly with the lid off. If keeping the lid off isn’t possible with your storage space, then place an absorbent cloth or paper inside to suck in the moisture.
- Cast-iron ovens gradually become black, smooth, and slick. Food is less likely to stick to their surfaces, making them easier to clean.
- Enamel-coated Dutch ovens are usually dishwasher friendly. They don’t have to be seasoned before each use, but they’re not able to withstand the extremely high heats that cast-iron pots can, making them ill-suited for frying foods.
