Kindle Fire HD |
16GB – $199 |
The Kindle Fire is Amazons version of the tablet. Available in 16GB and 32GB versions with a 1280×800 7” display that features a polarized filter and anti glare technology, it claims to have 40% faster Wi-Fi speeds using its dual-band dual-antennae, which in retrospect will allow 40% faster downloading and streaming. Barns N Noble Nook Tablet |
8GB – $179 |
Everyone is getting in on the tablet industry, Barns N Nobles once plain e-reader too is now a full fledge tablet. The Nook Tablet has a vibrant 7” screen, built in Wi-Fi, 16GB of storage with an expandable microSD slot. The Nook Store features thousands of books and magazines, including your typical apps such as Netflix and Hulu. This tablet sports a full featured browser as well. It’s not simple an e-reader, it’s a full featured tablet. But, in our opinions it does sport the best option if you are heavy into e-readers and books, while also giving you other things to do.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 |
8GB – $220 – $250 |
The Galaxy Tab 2 is a very very good Android tablet, running Android 4.0 OS, with a 1024×600 screen, 8GB internetal memory (expandable via microSD up to 32GB), Wi-Fi + Blue Tooth. Though the screen isn’t up past 1280 like most 7”, this screen is still very bright and vivid, though it could be better for video playback. This tablet features dual cameras, which most 7” tablets actually lack. The biggest problem to us was the screen again, as it isn’t up to par with other 7” tablets, but it’s still bearable. The smoothness of Android 4.0 on this tablets hardware makes for a pure and enjoyable Android experience. A great tablet!

Google Nexus 7 |
8GB – $199 |
The Google Nexus 7 is one of the best 7” tablets to date. Just released this summer it has focused attention on 7” tablets. With a gorgeous 1280×800 HD display at 216ppi you are guaranteed the most crisp and HD video ever. This godly tablet has a Quad-core Tegra 3 processor that will cut through apps and games like butter. Speaking of butter, project butter on this tablets Jelly Bean Android OS is so smooth it will leave you trembling. Two versions, 8GB and 16GB priced respectively. Google Play is integrated and features tons of apps/movies/tv’shows. This tablet unfortunetly lacks expandability, but with the cloud services its no problem. This tablet is simply our favorite 7” and probably Android tablet period.

64GB Storage – $240 |
Blackberry seems like a dying word in the mobile industry, but they aren’t going out with a fight. They are diving into tablets with the Blackberry Playbook. Running the familiar Blackberry OS, Blackberry smartphone users will feel at home. A 1024x600px screen, built in Wifi, rear and front facing cameras, 1GB of ram, and a 1Ghz dual core processor. The built in web browser offers flash support and runs great. Thousands of apps are available just for Blackberry from the Blackberry App World storefront. You can even get access to Blackberry BBM (messenger), email, calendar, contacts, from your Blackerry Smartphone. We think business people who use a Blackberry phone will love this tablet to compliment their work phone. Casual users might not enjoy this tablet as much, but you also might. Give it a shot!
Acer Iconia TAB |
8GB – $199 |
Running Android Honeycomb OS, this Tablet isn’t one to shy away from. Featuring awesome sound playback, something most tablets lack naturally from their speakers. Face-to-face video chats are extremely nice on 5MP rear-facing camera, and 2MP front-facing camera. 8GB of internal storage, 1GB DDR2 RAM, and a decent 1024x600px screen. Also note this guy sports a NVIDIA GeForce GPU, making gaming on this beast actually surprisingly good. You get all your other features such as Wifi, Bluetooth, 1 USB 2.0 port, Micro HDMI out. This tablet has dropped in price to compete with the Nexus 7, and is priced to match the 8GB Nexus at $199 – at the end of the day, its personal preference.

Tursion 7” Capacitive A10 |
4GB and 8GB version – $85 |
If you are wanting to save money, take advantage of the tablet price drops. This guy used to be $199 but dropped to just $85 recently. For those on a budget this is a gret tablet. Wifi support, 7” screen with front facing camera and mic. Android 4.0 is packed on this puppy, and its exandable up to 32GB via a microSD slot. Though the screen is only 800x480pixels its still a decent picture for its price. This is definetely a budget tablet that performs basic Android operations at a decent speed.
iRulu 7” Cortex A10 |
4GB – $82 |
Another budget Tablet running Android 4.0 with support for OpenGL 2.0 3D graphics makes for good gaming. A 800×480 resolution is decent but no the best. Youll find built in 4GB of memory, which is small, but expandable to 32GB. This tablet isn’t anything special by a long shot, but at half the price and some of the big hitters, its great for a high-school student with a part time job who wants to get a piece of the new tablet craze.
8GB and 16GB – $379 – $429 |
The Toshiba Thrive is a bit pricey compared to what you can get for a 7” tablet. The price is almost warranted if you have the money. It’s resolution matches the Nexus 7’s gorgeous 1280×800 – making for some amazing HD video playback on this tablet as well. It’s a big thicker and feels more sturdy then the Nexus 7. It runs Android 4.0 – and is powered by a NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor. Ontop of this is an NVIDIA GeForce GPU, making for some great gaming. Built in bluetooth, GPS, and more, its a pretty basic tablet but with more of a kick. Coming in a 32GB and 16GB version it is a powerful tablet, but with the prices of other tablets we cant justify the price tag. Wait a few months, and once it drops to the $199 range, pull the trigger. We love this tablet, just not its price.

Dell Streak 7 |
$193 – 16GB |
The Dell Streak 7 features 16GB of internal memory, Android 2.2 OS, 1GHz nVIDIA Tegra T20 dual core processor, and a 800×480 screen. It’s an older tablet whoes price has dropped to compete with the Nexus. It doesnt beat the Nexus, due to its sub par screen, but its still a good experiene. Built in Wifi, and a very crisp 5MP rear camera, which is beyond good for a tablet. The overall design of this tablet though feels amazing in our hands, not to thin, not to thick, but good for someone with bigger hamds. USB 2.0 port makes it great, and it can even capture 720P video.

8 Space Heater Safety Tips
By Brian Jones
We’ve all heard the horror stories and the warnings about house fires when space heaters are mentioned. So why do so many people still rely on them for warmth in the winter months? Let’s face it, a space heater is simply one of the best ways to keep us warm and comfortable. Central heating can be a massive source of wasted energy by heating an entire house whether you are in a certain room or not. A space heater uses far less energy and only heats parts of the house that are occupied.
There are many different kinds of space heaters, but the safety measures taken are all going to be the same. Staying on top of space heater safety is very important and can prevent a major loss of property or injury to family members. Follow these guidelines for proper space heater use:
- Make sure the space heater is on a level surface that is solid and nonflammable
- Look for safety approval seal (usually the “UL” label) and follow the owners manual when operating the space heater
- Keep everything 3 feet away from the space heater at all times. Especially any furniture, bedding, or drapes
- Plug the space heater directly into a wall outlet or use a heavy gauge extension cord if necessary
- Look for a unit that automatically shuts off when tipped over
- Make sure children and pets stay away from the space heater while it is operating. Sometimes surfaces can get very hot
- Turn the space heater off when you leave the room and unplug it when you leave the house. Do not leave the heater on when you go to sleep
- As always, make sure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in working order and close to every bedroom

Starting a Gas-Powered Leaf Blower
Gas blowers generally break down into two-cycle and four-cycle engines. The two-cycle variety require a special mixture of gas and oil to properly start the engine. The general rule is that for every gallon of gas you add 2 ½ ounces of oil. Adding too much oil to the mixture can cause serious problems with your gas blower, including:
- A damaged spark plug
- Difficulty starting the engine
- Smoke emissions while the blower is running
Four-cycle engines found on new gas blower models save you the trouble of mixing oil and gas together. However, both types of gas blowers follow the same basic steps.
- To begin, you need to mix the gas and oil together if the blower has a two-cycle engine. Make sure the oil is mixed into the gas before you pour it into the blower’s tank.
- Press and release the primer bulb about six times. This bulb pulls a small amount of gas to the throat of the carburetor.
- Put the choke in the closed position and pull the cord once.
- Switch the choke to the halfway position and pull the cord again up to four times.
- When the engine starts, let it run for about 10 seconds before opening the choke all the way.
Starting a gas blower may take a little muscle, but with a good model and clear instructions, it shouldn’t take more than one or two tries to get it running.

Washing Machines; The New Designer Appliance? How important is Appearance?
With so many new high-tech washer models, as sleek and stylish in appearance as they are functional, gone are the days of stowing them away in far-off rooms. Move over, plain industrial white washers, and make room for stainless steel, granite, and a myriad of bright colors. More frequently, families are displaying them proudly as part of the home décor. It’s not too surprising: today you can find models in designer colors to match the wallpaper and unbelievably quiet in operation.
Also, with the expanded drum capacities and extra accessories—from pedestal drawers to tuck away all that laundry gear to a worksurface for folding and treating clothes—laundry has become a faster, easier chore than ever before. Why not integrate it into the living areas of the house?
In this digital age, even household appliances are getting smarter. Look for even more advanced technology in the future. Perhaps your washer will one day communicate with the utility company to work out the best energy rates. You can be sure manufacturers are already developing the technology. Once they come up with a washer-dryer that also folds the laundry for you, I’m sold.

The Power of Perfumes and Fragrances to Stimulate Memory
By Lane Reid
In a flash a scent can take you to someone, someplace, or some specific moment in time. Is it magic? Not at all. Studies have proven that there is a strong connection between scent and memory.
The thought that a scent can exude that kind of power is truly amazing! Scents can trigger immediate emotional responses and affect a persons behavior. There are many ways to add fragrance to our lives, scented candles, aromatherapy, bath and body products, and perfumes.
Scents can provide an escape from our every day lives, making our homes feel more enjoyable and our showers and baths more relaxing. When it comes to personal fragrance, there are many different reasons why we use them. The most important being, that they make us feel happy. Perfumes can be used to build sexual desire, make us feel more attractive, confident, and to separate ourselves from others.
Fragrance allows our individuality to shine through with the impact of scent. Once a person attributes a specific scent to another it is forever imprinted in their mind. With a mere waft of perfume memories can connect you to someone, flooding their thoughts of you through fragrance alone. And that is the power of scent.

How to Select the Best Perfume or Fragrance for any Situation
By Lane Reid
What kind of woman will you be? The chameleon that changes her scent with the season, mood or time of day….or perhaps you will be the signature scent kind of girl where you have only one perfume that truly defines you. Like clothing a fragrance has to “fit” a person.
It’s not just a matter of what you find appealing but how a particular fragrance mixes with your body chemistry. With so many fragrances to choose from selecting a fragrance can be a process. That being said, it certainly doesn’t have to be an unpleasant one! While inhaling all of the different fragrances in the beauty department cleanse your nasal palate occasionally with the jar of coffee beans they offer, otherwise fragrances may start smelling the same.
Once you choose a fragrance you enjoy be sure to try it on. You want to make sure that it smells good on you when it mixes with your body chemistry. Lastly, spray the fragrance on a piece of paper and put it in your purse. It’s a way to wear it without actually putting it on your skin, in case you don’t like it.
By the end of the day you will know if that fragrance is for you. Whether you have a plethora of fragrances to choose from or just one that makes you feel special, fragrance is a modern day woman’s ultimate accessory.

Top 10 Rated Fragrance Rating and Reviews 2025
By Lane Reid
Women’s fragrances are of course a huge matter of personal preference and with so many to choose from, selecting a mere 10 was challenging. We looked at a lot of different aspects involved in choosing the scents that make up our top 10 list:
1) Consumer popularity speaks volumes. They don’t become best-sellers without a reason!
2) Industry recognition. A select few out of thousands receive awards and we definitely wanted to recognize those.
3) Accessibility is key as a fragrance needs to be tried on before purchasing so you can make sure it mixes well with your body chemistry.
4) Variety of day/night, or season.
5) Price can vary greatly and we wanted fragrances that varied from pricey to inexpensive.
6) Different scent categories are represented so consumers can see the variety there is to choose from.
7) The option to layer. Fragrances should have different products to choose from.
8) Trends. While some consumers are purchasing the “new” fragrances others prefer a classic.
Like the clothes you choose, a fragrance should be comfortable and make you feel beautiful. It needs to be a fit in order to wear it. Choosing a fragrance can be overwhelming. We recommend taking your time and trying them on. Lastly, when a fragrance wins a FiFi Award, it’s an equivalent of an Oscar in the fragrance world.

The History of Mascara is old as the Ancient Egyptians
Mascara is a cosmetic that is used to define, lengthen, darken and add volume to the lashes. It is one of the oldest known cosmetics dating back to 4000B.C. when the Egyptians first started using a homemade version of various ingredients including kohl, crocodile stool and honey.
In 1917, the first packaged mascara was created by Maybelline Cosmetics founder, Eugene Rimmel. This revolutionized mascara was made of petroleum jelly and coal and came in a cake form. The Maybelline brand, although reformulated, can still be purchased today. In 1957, mascara was modernized further by Helena Rubinstein who created a formula that came in a tube and wand formula.
Today there are many different brands and formulas to choose from. They all contain the same basic ingredients which are pigments, oils and waxes. Mascara has been and is still one of the most valued cosmetics in history.
How to Apply Mascara: 5 Steps for Proper Application
Proper application of a mascara can not only enhance the lashes to their fullest potential but also stretch the life of your mascara as well. If you are using a lash curler be sure to curl them first before applying mascara.
When removing the applicator from the tube do not “pump” it in and out to add more product to the brush. This pushes air into the tube and dries it out quicker. Open the tube without removing the applicator all the way and roll the brush in a circular motion inside the tube so it has enough mascara on the brush.
If there is too much product simply brush it back in the tube. It will get pushed back in when you close it up. Always start the mascara application at the base of the lashes and wiggle the brush back and forth as you move upward. This separates the lashes and helps to apply the product evenly.
Turn the brush so that you have used both sides before returning it to the tube. For the bottom lashes use the tip of the brush to coat them evenly. If you prefer a more dramatic look then go back over the lashes and apply a second coat.
Lastly, comb the lashes from base to tip removing any clumps or excess product with a lash comb. Any smudges around the eye can be removed with a Q-tip and a little makeup remover.
How to Choose the Best Mascara for Your Lashes
With so many different brands and formulas to choose from, selecting a mascara isn’t always an easy task. Lash assessment is key. Figuring out what type of lashes you have and the look you are trying to achieve are the most important steps.
There are several different categories that mascaras break down into; volumizing, lengthening, and a combination of both. Short thick lashes require a lengthening mascara. Long thin lashes require a volumizing mascara.
Short thin lashes require the combination mascara which is a little of both but not too much of either. Why is this so important? Using a volumizing mascara on short thick lashes will enhance the shortness by looking clumpy. Using a lengthening mascara on long thin lashes with enhance the thinness and look spidery.
The other factor in how a mascara achieves a look is in the magic of the brush. A large wand with dense bristles adds volume, a thinner less dense brush helps to separate and define and a curved brush helps to curl the lashes. Other factors to consider…a waterproof option, choice of color and also price.

6 Steps for Making the Best Espresso
Whether you buy a top-of-the-line espresso machine or a budget model, there are steps you can take to ensure that you get the highest-quality espressos. It takes practice and know-how to make fine coffee, and as you discover the best practices you’ll recognize it for the art form that it is.
Here are some tips to get the best results out of your machine:
1. Use the best ingredients.
Don’t skimp when it comes to the ingredients, and you won’t be disappointed with the end results. Select the freshest beans whenever possible, making sure that they’re medium-roasted so you get the most flavor. It’s best to grind them right before you plan to make espresso to limit the oils’ exposure to oxygen. Also use fresh water every time.
2. Grind the beans to a fine consistency.
Grinding the beans is a tricky process. You may have to experiment to find out which consistency produces the best results. The coffee grounds should be fine and smooth, somewhere between the consistency of sugar and flour, but not too fine or the hot water won’t be able to work its way through the tightly packed grounds.
3. Tamp with strong, even pressure.
On a flat, level surface, tamp down on the grounds with a pressure between 20 and 30 pounds. You want the grounds to be securely and evenly pressed in the basket so the hot water interacts with as much of the coffee as possible. Be sure there are no gaps or lumps in the grounds, or else the water won’t disperse evenly.
4. Brew at the optimal temperature.
For the best taste, the water in the tank should reach between 190° and 205° F. You can measure the temperature yourself. Note that this is not the temperature of the espresso you will be drinking, but the temperature at which the water makes contact with and extracts the coffee. If the water gets too hot—say, over boiling, the espresso will end up tasting burned and bitter.
5. Extract no longer than 30 seconds.
This is the process during which the coffee grounds dissolve into the water. If it doesn’t extract long enough, the coffee will taste thin and bitter. Overextracted espressos are weak and unpleasant in taste and smell. The best extraction time occurs between 20 and 30 seconds, leaving the espresso a light blonde color.
6. Drink and enjoy right away.
To experience the full richness of taste, don’t wait for the espresso to cool down, lest it becomes flat, bland, or bitter. Start sipping right away. The layer of crema at the top will be thick and foamy, and the concentrated amount of coffee in the espresso shot will make it hard to go back to any other type of coffee.

Pros and Cons to Side by Side Refrigerators; Advantages to Side-by-Sides
Obviously one of the best advantages of side by side fridges is that they cost much less than their french door, bottom freezer counterparts. There really is no practical reason for this other than the fact that the french door, bottom freezer design is the latest and greatest and therefore manufacturers charge a premium for it.
One advantage to a side by side fridge to those that use them most – chefs, is that they contain more in door storage capacity than other styles of refrigerators – especially french door fridges. The obvious benefit here is more shelves to store all kinds of accouterments, spices, sauces, dressings, and condiments.
The average depth of a side by side fridge is about 30 inches so we arent normally as concerned about the built in counter depth look even though they can be produced as counter depth, it’s not as common.
Side by sides are considered a good choice for galley-style kitchens or tighter spaces due to the fact that they are normally quite a bit narrower at an average width of 35” than a top and bottom fridge freezer design. The main reason for the benefit here is that there is not the width in the kitchen to accommodate a larger swing size door like a full size door on a top/bottom refrigerator. The smaller width half doors on a side by side refrigerator just fit better.
One of the negative attributes of Side by Sides compared with a Fridge Top bottom freezer unit is that one must bend over to reach the lower portions of the refrigerator, which are also frequently used storage spaces in the fridge. Same with the inner door, you will be bending over a lot to access the lower portions.
Compared with a French door top bottom freezer fridge you will naturally use a little more energy with a side by side fridge due to the fact that you are opening the entire refrigerator door every time and allowing much of the refrigerated air to escape. With a french door fridge you can open just one half of the refrigerator space to retrieve what you need – thus the reason for the recent introduction by Sub Zero of the windowed refrigerator door, which allows you to see ahead of time where the item is that you want to retrieve.
Other than that, aesthetic appearance differences are the primary consideration. Generally, french door bottom freezer fridges are considered the best looking option and they cost more as a result. After that, side by side refrigerators are thought of as next best looking if there is such a dubious honor among this category.

Internet connected appliances may or may not be the next big thing. It will depend on you the consumer, as to whether or not this trends stays around. Are you willing to pay more for a refrigerator with an LCD screen that enables Google calendar to remind your significant other that it’s time to pick up the dry cleaning. Do you want to be able to scroll through pictures on your refrigerator display. If you have ever had a digital picture frame you know whether or not you will use this feature.
There are a lot more of these options on the way. There will be refrigerators, washers, dryers, and more that can do things like alert you when your laundry is done, or let you choose your dryer cycle with a touch screen, or even diagnose problems your machine is having wirelessly via the Web. Is it overkill? Is it just a trend to get you to pay more for an appliance? Does it simplify your life to have to program your LCD screen on the refrigerator? Samsung has two refrigerators that are at the front of this connected trend: the RSG309 and RF4289 each have an 8-inch screen built into the door, which along with a series of kitchen-related applications and built-in Wi-Fi makes your refrigerator a whole lot smarter.

Different Types of Ice Cubes Made By Ice Makers
Ice is ice, you might be thinking. What does it matter what shape or color it’s in? You’d be surprised to know that many food industry establishments, businesses, and private homes consider the shape and clarity of the ice they want when purchasing an ice maker. It’s not simply about aesthetics; it comes down to the fact that different ice cubes melt differently in your glass.
Cloudy vs. Clear
Most ice makers on the market produce cloudy, or opaque, ice. This kind of ice isn’t white and cloudy because it’s dirty or impure; rather, the water is frozen at a much greater speed, leaving small air bubbles trapped inside the cubes. Many restaurants appreciate cloudy ice because it’s soft and porous, absorbing the taste of the drink it sits in. It also has the benefit of cooling drinks immediately. Many people enjoy soft ice because it’s light and crunchy, making it appealing to those who chew ice as a habit; fortunately, they won’t damage their teeth as badly as they would with hard, clear ice.
Some ice makers are designed specifically to create clear ice by removing all the air and impurities from the ice during the freezing process. More formal restaurants choose hard ice, which is clear, odorless, and tasteless. Drinks do not penetrate hard ice; on the contrary, hard ice takes longer to melt, does not dilute drinks, and only provides cooling from the outer surface. Clear ice makers are generally the most expensive type on the market.
Different Shapes
Portable, undercounter, and commercial ice makers all produce ice cubes of different shapes.
- Crescent shaped ice is the most common form of ice you’ll see produced by your refrigerator and undercounter ice makers. Flat on one edge and rounded on the other, it’s typically cloudy in appearance.
- Bullet shaped ice looks the way its name suggests: like a cylindrical bullet with a rounded hole in the flat end. Also opaque in color, bullet ice is commonly made by portable ice makers.
- Flake ice is usually completely white and is one of the cheapest forms of ice to make in great quantities. It cools drinks quickly and is convenient for packing and storing food, making it a favorite choice of many restaurant establishments.
- Nugget, or pellet, ice is clear, crisp, and popular as a chewable ice. Because it melts slowly and doesn’t dilute drinks, many people see it as a refreshing option for their soft drinks. Several Scotsman ice maker models produce nugget ice.
