Wine Cooler Buying Guide
The Best Features to Have in a Wine Cooler
As you shop for a wine cooler, you should consider more than just the number of bottles it will hold. Whether you drink wine casually or have several fine wines you want to preserve, there are wine coolers that will protect your bottles over time and those that won’t. Look for these features to find the wine cooler that’s best for you and your collecting needs.
Capacity
You don’t want to spend a great deal of money on a wine cooler and later wish that you had bought one with a greater capacity. Consider how many bottles you’re saving for a long period of time and how many you have for regular consumption. Whatever that number is, allow for an increase in your collection.
Racks
Since many wine coolers’ racks are spaced tightly together, adjustable shelves make it incredibly easier to store large or unusually shaped bottles. Vinyl-coated racks are better than chrome wire ones, and wooden shelves offer extra sturdiness. Find out if the racks are fixed or adjustable, and whether you can slide out the shelves to view your selections.
Door
While most wine coolers feature a glass door because it’s attractive in style, exposing your bottles to light can having damaging effects. If you select a cooler with a glass door, look for models with double-paned glass for extra insulation and UV protection. Don’t leave the interior light on full-time, either. It looks pretty to have your wine collection lit up, but your bottles don’t need the extra heat.
Locks
You may not even think about the security of your wine unless you have nosy guests or teenagers frequenting the house. A good lock on the cooler door can keep someone from accidentally opening that priceless bottle you had saved for retirement.
Vibrations
If your wine cooler vibrates, even a little, it can cause the sediment in the bottle to interfere with the wine’s aging process. Many wine coolers claim to solve this problem with thermoelectric technology, in which the only moving part is the fan. Short of that solution, coolers with padded racks will help protect your wines from vibrations.
Durability
A wine cooler’s durability is perhaps the greatest consideration you should make, along with price. A cooler may look snazzy and be low in price, but if it’s not a reliable model you could end up with a broken machine and damaged wine. Better to invest in a more expensive, reliable cooler and set your mind at rest knowing your collection is safe than to save a bit on the initial price and risk a disaster.

Pot Racks Buying Guide
The Benefits of the Pot Rack
Whether you’re hoping to organize your kitchen, clearing out the clutter from your cabinets, or you’re a fanatic cook, then you should consider a pot rack. Pot racks have long been a convenient kitchen accessory that gives you more space in your work area and yet keeps your cooking tools within easy reach.
Convenient access
Do you wish all your pots, pans, and utensils were in plain view and easy fingertip reach? It’s a hassle having to dig through drawers for that one ladle or pull out all your stacked pots to find the medium sized one you need. A pot rack provides quick and simple organization. Because you can see all of your tools, it’s easy to grab the one you need right away.
Saving space
We’ve all experienced the joy of opening up the cabinet and having a bunch of haphazardly stacked pots tumble out on the floor. Your kids have probably discovered the fun game of pulling them out, too. If you have limited cabinet space, then a pot rack can be a lifesaver. It also helps clear the counter and drawers of your most-used utensils. You’ll appreciate having a clean, tidy workspace without sacrificing easy access to your favorite tools.
Visual appeal and design
Because they’re displayed so prominently in the kitchen, pot racks come in a wide variety of styles, materials, and designs. An attractive pot rack can be as elegant as it is functional, in such materials as wrought iron, wood, distressed steel, nickel, or pewter. An added benefit: If you’re a devoted chef and proud of your collection of fancy cookware, then you’ll love showing them off to visitors. A pot rack can add class, style, and hominess to any kitchen.

Cookware Set Buying Guide
Tips for Buying a Cookware Set
These days, people seem to be divided along the line of stainless steel vs. anodized aluminum, non-stick cookware sets. Both materials have their pros and cons, and both are popular. You need to decide what other features are important to you so you can select the best quality set for your budget.
Price
Most decent cookware sets start out at about $100. If you go too cheap, you could wind up with a low-quality set that warps, stains, and falls apart after regular use.
Versatile functions
A cookware set is a worthwhile investment because you get all the essential kitchen pieces you need for a reasonable price. The trick is to make sure the set you buy has the most important cookware items and not too many extraneous pieces that merely raise the price. Look for sets with a lidded saucepan, a skillet/frying pan, and a stockpot. A straight-edged saute pan is also useful. Sometimes the set offers a Dutch oven instead of a stockpot, but they both serve many of the same functions.
You don’t necessarily need multiple sizes of the same thing unless you’re an avid cook and you like to have a lot of pots and pans going at once. After you have all the essential tools in a set, any additional pieces either sweeten the deal or jack up the price, depending on your perspective. Compare sets and prices to get an idea of what’s a fair deal.
Material
Stainless steel is the most versatile material for cookware. It’s highly durable, not likely to warp or get dings if you set it down hard. Stainless steel also doesn’t pit or react to acidic and alkaline ingredients. But it has its downsides, too. Unless the pots and pans have an aluminum core or a base of aluminum or copper, the stainless steel won’t conduct heat very efficiently.
Aluminum is another common choice because it’s an effective conductor. You’ll see some cookware sets described as hard anodized, which means the aluminum went through a special process to be reinforced and made stronger. Some aluminum cookware have non-stick surfaces, which are ideal for easy hand washing. That’s a good thing, because putting aluminum cookware in the dishwasher normally isn’t advised.
Quality design
It’s the little things that make a big difference when it comes to cookware. You want the pots and pans to be heavy and sturdy enough to feel durable, but you don’t want them so heavy that they’re hard to maneuver on the stovetop.
Handles should stay cool to the touch even while you’re heating the pots to a boil. Contoured, easy-to-grip handles are beneficial for safety and comfort reasons. Lids should fit securely over the pots and pans to trap the heat, moisture, and nutrients of the food. If you have a pot rack, look for cookware with hooks on the handles so you can hang them up.
Even if you’re on a tight budget, it’s best to spring for the highest-quality set you can afford. Cheap pots and pans of poor quality will only cost you more in the long run when you have to replace them. Also consider saving up for specialty cookware items, such as stir-fry pans or cast-iron skillets. The more you build up your cookware collection, the more versatile cooking tasks you’ll be able to perform.

Wine Glasses Buying Guide
How Wine Glass Shape and Size Affects the Taste of Wine
You’d be surprised to know that experts have studied how the size and shape of wine glasses affects the taste and smell of wine. There’s a reason that there are a variety of glass shapes for different types of wine—each type enhances that wine’s special qualities.
You’re not only enhancing the taste of wine, but also the visual presentation. The right glass, with clear, brilliant clarity, shows off the rich color of the contents within. You feast as much with your eyes as with your mouth and stomach.
The shape and size of a wine glass determines how much of the surface of the wine is exposed to air. The level of oxidation, or exposure to air, has a subtle but noticeable affect on the chemicals within the wine that determine its taste and aroma. If the bowl of the glass is large enough, you can swirl the wine around to bring out all the flavor and smells.
Whites and Reds
But why are there different glasses for red and white wines? You can find all-purpose glasses that work for either kind of wine. They feature a tulip-shaped bowl that’s large enough for swirling but tapered enough to concentrate the bouquet.
However, wine connoisseurs appreciate a smaller version of the tulip glass for white wines. Whites generally don’t require much exposure to air, and the narrowed openings of white wine glasses keep the bouquet contained within and also help preserve the chill.
Full-bodied red wines benefit from aeration. The large burgundy glass features a large, open bowl that also makes an impressive presentation of these rich wines.
And of course, there’s also the champagne flute that you see at fancy occasions and New Year’s Eve parties. The long, narrow flute preserves the bubbles of champagne and also helps keep the drink chilled.
Rim, Stem, and Thickness
Even subtle qualities of the wine glass enhance the drinking experience. When the rim of the glass is thin and even, it directs wine to the right areas of the tongue for a full appreciation of the flavor. Depending on how wide the opening of the glass, the wine will either emit or retain its bouquet. Remember, reds generally require a glass with a wide opening, and whites taste better when the bouquet is concentrated in the glass.
The stem is also important, and not just for functional purposes. Yes, you hold the glass by the stem, so it should be long enough to be gripped comfortably. Doing so prevents the heat from your hand from altering the taste of the wine (yes, it has an effect).
With a stem firmly attached to both the bowl and the base, the wine glass should be sturdy enough to swirl the wine around. Thick glass is good for durability, but only at a minimum. The thinner the glass, the more you can appreciate the visual presentation of the wine.

4 Ways to Mow Really Tall Grass
Does your lawn resemble a jungle? Either you’re blessed with fast growing grass, or you’ve neglected your mowing duty for too long. In either case, if you don’t have a riding mower, you may have to do double the work to take care of the problem.
- First, try mowing on the highest height setting. Wait a couple days before mowing the yard again at a normal setting.
- Is the grass too stubborn or is your mower not up to the task? If mulching doesn’t work, try bagging the clippings.
- If the mower keeps clogging, try a narrower strip, say 6 to 12 inches, with each mowing pass.
- If all else fails, set your mower to side discharge. You’ll have to rake up the clippings afterward, but at least you’ll have tamed the jungle.
Now that you know how much extra work is involved in cutting tall grass, you’ll be motivated to keep up with a regular mowing schedule.

Top 10 Golf Balls 2025
By S. Dee Davis
The following list of the best top ten golf balls was determined from the authors opinion using the following criteria: Consistency in length off the tee, spin control and the ability to hold greens, “feel” of the ball around greens for chipping and putting, durability, and price/value. Combining a ball that’s long and straight off the tee with little spin, a ball that’s soft and controllable around the greens, and a ball that really takes spin with short irons is the ultimate challenge for golf ball manufacturers. See the golf ball comparison and ratings below with a link to the full review of each.

Golf Balls Buying Guide
How to Buy a Golf Ball
Matching Golfer Skill with Golf Ball Build
Dimple Design and Construction
There are many considerations when determining what type of golf ball you will buy and play with. One is dimple design. The number of dimples as well as the design can help you gain distance (or lose distance for balls with older technology). The size and shape of dimples and well as depth all play a part in how far and accurately the ball flies. One design flies farther, another straighter, and still another a mid loft, and another at low loft. Then there’s the roll on the greens. One roll purer and straighter than the other.
Layer Construction
Here we are talking about the number of layers in the construction of the golf ball. It could have 2 to 5 layers at present. The higher the number of layers in the ball construction the more the ball typically costs and the more feel and design is implemented. The simplest balls with 2 layer construction – though much improved – are more for beginning golfers and will cost less. Higher layer construction balls like the ProV1x and Callaway i(s) give golfers more flexibility with varying swing speeds.
Spin Slope and Spin Control
In golf, how much spin the ball creates from impact has a lot to do with how straight it flies through the air. Higher spin slope balls are designed with better golfers in mind and will spin more with lower irons and with lower impact speeds. They also contain a soft middle core that when compressed by higher velocity shots from higher swing speeds reduces spin to allow for more distance and straighter ball flight. Lower spin slope golf balls will travel straighter and longer for lower swing speeds and be more consistent with lower velocity shots. However, they are typically harder around the greens depending on the cover. Essentially the more spin there is on the golf ball, the less far it travels because spin is creating some resistance.
Here’s a little table to help you decide which ball is right for you:
Generally…
More limited attributes in the golf ball | = | less layers of construction | = | Less Expensive golf ball |
More distance plus feel | = | more layers of construction | = | Higher price golf ball |

Golf Wedge Buying Guide
Bounce Angle and Course Considerations
When it comes to selecting a wedge one of the most important considerations is the bounce angle and the style of swing you execute wedge shots with. Generally, the steeper your angle of attack when ball striking, the more bounce you want from the wedge. This helps prevent taking too deep of divots and catching the ball fat. It also helps with keeping the club more shallow through the sand.
If your swing angle with wedges is shallow – meaning you take little divot with them then you will want to choose wedges with a low bounce angle to help prevent thinning your wedge shots.
Shallow swing angle = low bounce angle.
Neutral swing = medium bounce angle.
Steep swing deep digger = high bounce angle.
One other very important consideration is course condition. If the course you play is usually very soft and you find yourself hitting a lot of shots fat – take a wedge with more bounce. If the course is routinely too firm and hard then you will want a wedge with lower bounce to keep from hitting shots thin.

Grills Buying Guide
The Benefits of Charcoal Grilling
Regular gas and electric grills are perfectly adequate at searing meats, vegetables, fish, and fruit. However, for the mouth-watering, tender, smoky barbecue taste that you typically get from a smoker at a barbecue restaurant, you can also use a charcoal grill.
The trick to charcoal grilling is cooking foods for a long period at low temperatures. By building a fire at one end of the grill and maintaining control of the airflow, you can effectively slow cook ribs, chicken, or pork for an authentic, smoky barbecue taste.
Charcoal grills have a couple advantages over regular gas grills:
- With fewer moving parts, charcoal grills have a longer lifespan.
- They usually cost less than gas grills. Of course, the fuel you buy to heat them can even out the costs in the long run.
A gas grill can be a more convenient choice because it starts up and cooks faster, but for a rich taste and tender consistency, a charcoal grill is a valuable cooking tool.

Audiophiles, professional sound engineers, and recording artists demand the best sound quality from their headphones. They want a set that’s comfortable to wear for long periods of time but still allows for the full range of sounds.
Whether you’re a casual music listener or an avid collector of sound equipment, it’s worthwhile to review the basics of sound quality so you understand what manufacturers are talking about when they claim their headphones are the best.
Sound perception varies from person to person. The best way to select new headphones is to try them out yourself at the store. Because everyone has different shaped heads and ears, they’ll perceive music and sound differently, especially since headphones pipe music directly into the ears. Hence, it’s important to try on different headphones not only to see which ones are comfortable to wear, but to get an idea of how rich and full the music sounds.
Consider the following questions:
- Does the sound come out clear with no distortions or muddiness?
- Is the bass clear, powerful, and controlled?
- You don’t want a bass so strong that it overpowers the vocals and lighter sounds.
- Some headphones have shaking technology that lets you feel as well as hear the thumping bass.
- Are the high sounds tinny or smooth?
- Is there a distinguishable hiss with a wireless set?
For long periods of use, you need a comfortable fit. Many modern headphones are incredibly lightweight, but make sure you’re comfortable wearing a set for an extended time. Padded surfaces are a must—including the headband. With circumaural headphones, you want a good seal over the ears, but make sure it’s not so tight that it puts undue pressure on your ears and head. Some headphones make your ears heat up or feel tingly if you wear them too long.
Being able to adjust your headphones is critical, especially if you’re a professional who wears them a lot. The headband should adjust for different head sizes, and pivoting ear cups making getting a comfortable position easier. Unless they’re wireless, headphones typically come with a cord anywhere from 6 to 10 feet. Some have a Y split in the cord, with each end connecting to an ear cup. Headphones with a single-sided cord allow for more freedom of motion.
Understanding Other Sound Terms
Frequency: Headphones capture the complete range of sounds that humans can hear, from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. The question is how well they reproduce those frequencies. Any low frequencies below 20 Hz aren’t audible, but you can sometimes feel them.
Sensitivity: Headphones measure their loudness efficiency in terms of decibels per milliwatt of power. You want a high sensitivity number of at least 100 dB if you’re using a portable device. The lower the sensitivity, the harder the headphones have to work to sound as loud as those with high sensitivity.
Impedance: Impedance is measured in ohms and it relates to how much resistance the headphones put on an amplifier. Most headphones for professional and commercial use have impedances under 100 ohms. The higher the impedance, the more power you’ll need.

Budget Washing Machine Buying Guide
How to Select the Right Washer
There are at least five main factors you should consider when picking out your next washing machine: the washer’s durability, performance, efficiency, and affordability, and your washing needs. If you know what to look for in a washing machine, you can avoid some of the common mistakes buyers make and find a product that satisfies your laundry needs for years to come.
Durability
Nothing’s more frustrating than buying a machine that works fine for the first year or so, and then starts to fall apart conveniently after the warranty expires. Know before you buy a particular brand if there is a service company in your area that can fix your washer should it someday have problems. Read up on the model, including customer reviews, to be aware of any red flags. Sometimes it’s better to go with a trusted model that’s been on the market a few years than to risk purchasing a brand new, expensive washer with lots of fancy features that are prone to breaking.
Performance
How well does a washer actually clean laundry? Again, read reviews before making your final choice. Customer reviews are usually good about lavishing praise where it’s due and forthcoming about any flaws. Do you need a washer that can handle big, bulky loads, gentle on delicates and tough on highly soiled garments? Look for performance features that match your specific laundry needs.
Efficiency
Everyone is concerned about energy efficiency today. Not only are efficient washers better for the environment, they help you save on your electric bill. Compare the EnergyGuide stickers on different models to see which is most efficient: the lower the EnergyGuide rating, the more efficient the machine. Also look for Energy Star label, which indicates a washer meets or exceeds the government energy standards. Both top load and front load washers have highly efficient models that help conserve water and energy.
Affordability
How much you should pay for a washer depends on the level of quality you expect from the machine. The least expensive models, with only the most basic features, typically run from $250 to $350. Modestly priced machines that can handle the laundry needs of most families can cost up to $700. The priciest, most sophisticated models with advanced features and high efficiency usually exceed $1000. Decide how much you can budget for a washer and figure out which washing features you will actually need and use. Be aware that the cheapest models are generally the least efficient and roughest on your clothes, and avoid washers with only one water level, as these waste the most water.
Know what you need
Your laundry habits and family size determine what kind of washing machine you should buy. A person living alone who only does a few loads a week has very different washer requirements than a family with several messy children and pets. Don’t pay extra for frills and features you won’t use. Look instead for a reliable, high performing model that conserves water and energy at a reasonable price.

Gas Ranges Buying Guide
Gas vs. Electric Ranges: The Pros and Cons of Both
If you’re shopping for a new stove, you’re probably wondering whether it’s better to have a gas or an electric range. With today’s competitive appliance market, you’re in luck: Both styles are highly effective and not too far apart in quality. There are just some minor differences between gas and electric ranges that you should consider before you make a purchase so you get a model that meets your specific cooking needs. Here’s a break-down of the major pros and cons of each type of range.
Gas Range Pros:
- With a gas range, you have more precise control over the cooking temperature, which is this style’s main advantage over electric ranges.
- Its sealed burners are easy to clean when spills occur.
- A gas range is most practical in areas that rely on propane or natural gas as a source of power.
- Many models have an electronic ignition to light the burners, saving them trouble with matches.
Gas Range Cons:
- They are typically more expensive than electric ranges, costing anywhere from $75 to $200 more than a comparable electric model.
- Installing a gas line to a house also costs a significant amount of money.
- Some people are leery of using gas because of the risk of carbon monoxide leaks. Also, the pilot lights are highly flammable and need to be shut off during vacations.
Electric Range Pros:
- An electric range is typically less expensive than a gas range and offers many of the same features.
- An electric range with a solid ceramic or glass top makes it easy to wipe up spills.
- Most homes already have a 240-volt power supply necessary for an electric range, and they are relatively inexpensive to install.
- An electric range has no risks associated with gas or pilot lighters.
Electric Range Cons:
- While many top models are precise, an electric range is generally less precise with heat than a gas range.
- An electric range does not have the same toasting and roasting functions as a gas range.
- Electric range models with coil burners are harder to clean; their drip pans become dirty and grimy with frequent use.
While there are advantages and disadvantages to both gas and electric ranges, many of the best models have similar performance and special features, such as a self-cleaning option. Ultimately, your choice boils down to your cooking preferences, your budget, and your feelings toward gas versus electricity.
