Figuring Out the Best Height for a Pot Rack

By

A hanging pot rack ideally keeps pots and pans within easy reach above your head. However, you’ll need to consider the height of your ceiling and your own height to determine the best height for your pot rack. If it’s short or you hang it too high, you won’t be able to reach stuff without straining, and if it’s too low, the pots could get in the way of your cooking (or graze your head).

Fortunately, there are a few quick steps you can take to figure out the right height for your pot rack.

  • Measure the height of your ceiling.
  • Measure yourself, plus an additional 6 or 10 inches depending on how long your arm is when you extend it over your head. You need only reach the bottom of the pans, not the hooks, when you reach overhead.
  • Subtract your height (including the outstretched arm) from the overall ceiling height to get an idea of how tall the pot rack should be. Factor in the length of the pots and pans into that equation too.

Some racks come specifically designed to fit a standard 9-foot ceiling. If your ceiling is a different height, then consider a pot rack with chains, which are easily adjustable. Chains are very forgiving if your measurements are slightly off. You can simply move the chain up or down a couple links.

The Essential Knives You’ll Find in Most Knife Sets

By

Knife sets vary in the types of knives they offer. Typically, the more knives in a set, the higher the price rises. While it’s awfully convenient to have a versatile collection for all your cooking tasks, you also don’t want to get saddled with a bunch of frilly knives that you never use.

Perhaps you need a quick course on the different kinds of knives standard in most sets and how they’re used.

Chefs knife Usually 8 to 12 inches long A chefs knife is your all-purpose knife responsible for most of your cutting tasks: chopping, mincing, dicing. With a long, wide blade, it can even cut through bone.
Paring knife 3 to 4 inches long A paring knife handles the smaller, more delicate tasks, such as peeling fruit and deveining shrimp.
Cleaver 6 to 8 inches long; 3 inches wide A cleaver comes in handy jointing poultry. While you can joint meat with a chefs knife too, you risk dulling or damaging the blade.
Filleting knife 4 to 6 inches long A filleting knife, being long, slender, and flexible, does what its name suggests: fillets fish. You can also bone meats with its sharp edge.
Bread knife 6 to 10 inches long With its serrated edge, a bread knife can saw through bread without crumbling or crushing it.
Carving knife 8 to 15 inches long Thinner than a chefs knife, a carving knife makes slim, precise cuts through big chunks of meat.
Boning knife 5 to 6 inches long Thin and flexible, a boning knife works its way into meats to remove the bones.

Santoku knives are gaining popularity and finding their way into knife sets. Similar to chefs knives except lighter, they feature indentations along the blade that reduce friction between the food and the blade. They slice through tough food easily without it sticking to the blade.

Utility knives, typically around 5 inches long, are still found in many knife sets. They’re between a paring knife and a chefs knife in size, but they’re generally too big for delicate tasks and not sturdy enough for heavy tasks.

Workout Plan or Personal Trainer?

We all want to be shredded, ripped, faster, stronger, or have that famous 6 pack of albs. But many of us cheat, we eat bad, don’t workout, or are not frequent. The first step in getting ripped or that 6 pack is commiting to some sort of plan. Working out alone, twice a week isn’t enough.

The health industry is over whelming and the amount of phony info out there on how to get ripped. You can lose a lot of money buying bogus supplements, workout DVD’s, books, and trainers and get no results.

Since it’s overwhelming many people resort to a personal trainer – which at it’s core can get pretty expensive. $25 – $100 a sessions, multiple times a week?! Yikes! Though you might get great results , why pay that much?

Try looking at a Workout Plan – either a DVD box set or Book. DVD sets are great and are like having a virtual personal trainer – no need to hire a real one. And save TONS of money.

$100 can get you a great 90 day workout program such as INSANITY or P90X. Check out are list of the top 10 workout plans to get started today!

A Guide to the Different Types of Espresso Machines

By

With the high cost of visiting a coffeehouse and the growing demand for gourmet coffee, more people are looking into investing in their own espresso machine. A high-quality machine, the priciest of which can run up to $1,000, can last over a decade and bring the fine quality of espressos, cappuccinos, and lattes to your own home. Of course, you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg: There are also budget models available for as low as $25. You’ll just have to have an idea of how espresso machines work and what qualities make a model a top performer.

Different versions

The most basic type of espresso maker is the stovetop variety, which, as its name implies, sits atop the stove and requires no outlets or wires. These are the kind you’re like to see in an Italian restaurant. Stovetop espresso makers are handy because they’re easily portable and you can even bring them on a camping trip.

Steam machines are another form of espresso makers. They work by using steam pressure to push hot water through the coffee grounds. You can find steam espresso makers for low, affordable prices, but they vary in the quality of coffee they produce.

Pump-driven machines produce the finest-quality coffee and therefore cost the most. There are manual pumps which are very hands-on when it comes to controlling the brewing process, and automatic pump models that grind the beans, brew the coffee, and deposit the grounds for you; all you have to do is occasionally empty the bin of used grounds. Falling in the middle are semiautomatic machines, which vary in how much work they do independently.

Ground coffee or pods

Espresso machines also vary in what form of coffee they accept. Some models exclusively require pods, or pre-measured, pre-ground capsules. Pods are convenient because they don’t require you to measure or tamp down the grounds yourself, but be aware that some espresso makers are designed to take only that brand’s pods. You won’t be able to find the product in stores but will have to order them from the manufacturer (and it can be expensive).

Other espresso makers require you to measure, fill, and tamp down the coffee grounds yourself. The process is not difficult but it can take practice to get just the right results. Some machines accept either grounds or pods for ultimate flexibility and control. Ultimately, the cheapest route is to buy coffee beans and grind them yourself.

Canon Lens Buying Guide

Lenses are the most important piece of equipment behind the actual body of the camera. Some might even say the lens is more important. Either way, the lens really changes the how you are going to tackle a certain subject or idea. So what are you supposed to look for in a lens. This buying guide will go over some of the key points to look at in a lens depending on what type of shooting you plan on doing.

Focal Length

Focal length is very important in any type of photography. A lot of people think the more zoom you have the better, but that is not always the case. The more zoom you have means you have more weight to carry around and that zoom lens definitely cost an extra arm and leg. If you are going to be shooting at a wedding reception or a school event, a zoom lens in the 18-100mm area is going to be perfect. If you are shooting a sporting event you might want to bump that up to 200mm or 300mm so you can get the greatest shot. There really is no reason to go higher than 300mm if you aren’t doing professional shooting. Look at all the options available and make the right choice.

Aperture

Aperture is listed on the barrel of the lens. It is important to know what the numbers mean and what they will do for you. The lower the number the wider the aperture can get and the more light that enters the camera. The lower the number also means the depth of field will be more shallow. That means the field of focus perpendicular to the camera will be shallow. That’s how photographers make the background and foreground nice an blurry. So, if you plan on doing a lot of low light shooting or want to add a lot of artistic blur a lens with a f/1.8 will do the trick for you.

Filter Thread Size

Buying lots of filters can be expensive. There is nothing worse than finding out that your collection of filters won’t fit on your new lens. 52mm is a pretty standard size, so you should feel pretty comfortable getting filters for that size. A lot of special lenses like the fish-eye and macro will have different. Be aware and know what you are getting into.

Extra Features

Things like Canon’s Ultra Sonic Motor and Optical Image Stabilization make good lenses great lenses. Silent focusing can be a plus if you shoot around people and don’t want to disturb them or if you are shooting an event where you really need to be quiet. VR image stabilization is very good for low light shooting because you will be using slower shutter speeds most of the time. Canon also uses a lot of different lens coatings that help with light transmission and reflections. Look for things like that on your next lens purchase.

You will surely find a lens that works with your camera set up flawlessly if you look out for all of these things on your next lens purchase. It is worth the time and effort of research since buying a new lens is a pretty big investment.

The Best Special Features in a Breadmaker

The more features a breadmaker has, the more the price goes up. Be sure to review all the features a model offers and decide which you consider necessities and which are fancy bells and whistles. Some features that we consider pretty convenient and worth the extra cost:

A delay start timer: Say you want to have some fresh bread ready for when you wake up in the morning. Just set the timer up to 12 or 13 hours and the machine starts at the appropriate time.

Dual paddles: Many breadmakers get by with just one kneading paddle, but some come equipped with two, which generally mix the dough more thoroughly and create a higher rise.

Beep alerts for adding ingredients: If you’re making a fruit bread, it’s convenient to know when it’s the best time to add raisins, nuts, or other ingredients during the second kneading cycle. Some models let you open the lid to add these ingredients; others include an automatic dispenser that does the task for you.

Preheat cycle: A breadmaker with a preheat cycle gets all the ingredients to room temperature for you.

Dough cycle: Sometimes a recipe calls for taking out the dough after proofing and shaping it by hand. A dough cycle is useful when you’re making rolls, pizza dough, or other breads with special shapes.

Yeast dispenser: If you plan to delay the start time of your breadmaker, then a yeast dispenser is an important feature to have because it keeps the yeast fresh and dry and adds it at just the right time.

Cool down feature: If you can’t get the loaf out of the breadmaker right away, then the cool down period prevents the loaf from getting soggy by sucking out excess moisture in the machine.

Keep warm feature: Some breadmakers keep the loaf warm for 30 to 60 minutes after it’s finished baking.

Crust shade: Look for models that let you choose the crust shade: light, medium, or dark.

Android based cameras are a very new thing to the digital photography world. You might ask: What about the camera on my Android phone? Well, that’s not exactly what is going on here. An Android based camera has all the features of a dedicated camera, with the ability to connect to the internet, share on social networks, download and use apps, and in the case of the Samsung Galaxy Camera connect to a cellular network for full-time connection. This sounds like a good idea at first, but there are some points to take into consideration.

AT&T is going to take the chance and offer customers this camera to add to their data plans. What does that mean? This camera can take photos at 16 mega pixels. A typical file size for a 16MP jpeg at 100% quality is around 3MB. (Stick to your cellphone camera if you want to use anything less than full quality on a dedicated digital camera). That is probably going to add up to a lot of data usage pretty quickly if you decide to upload all your snapshots to facebook or any photo sharing network. If there is a wifi network available, stick to that. Plus there are fees and contracts associated with adding devices to your network plans. Something like this may be more hassle than its worth. That’s not to say it is a bad idea. This is an attempt to keep dedicated camera relevant in a world where cell phone cameras are more powerful every year. So just like every change in technology, some kinks need to be worked out before the full potential can really be seen.

Choose the Right Pair of Headphones

By

There are many types of headphones out there on the market. They all have their pro and cons, right and wrong situations, and you have your preferences. This will be a quick overview on how to choose what type of headphones will work best for you.

Earbuds

Earbuds have become very popular as mobile music devices flood the market. Now we have our music on our persons at all times. Earbuds have become the best way to travel lightly with our music. They weight almost nothing and take up virtually no space. Those are the good things. Sound quality for most earbuds isn’t bad, but they always seem to be lacking just a little bit of the full range bigger headphones offer.

Noise Cancelling Headphones

Noise cancelling headphones are going to be your best bet if you are a constant traveler, mass transit commuter, office listener, or library hermit. These types of headphones are capable of keeping environmental and ambient noise out while keeping the sound of your music in. No one disturbs you and you disturb no one. It’s a pretty great feeling to know you can create your own quiet place with your favorite tunes just about anywhere. Sound quality is also going to be very impressive on a pair of noise cancelling headphones. And it should be since you will be hearing as much of the music that you possibly can.

Wireless Headphones

Wireless headphones are important for many reasons. Most importantly, the ability to listen to your music on a portable device and not worry about getting tangled in the cord or yanking it out is a dream. These headphones are going to be perfect for those who mostly listen on their cell phones. Most headphones and smartphones are capable of interacting with each other effortlessly. Plus more often then not a pair of wireless headphones has a mic built-in so you can take calls without digging out your phone. Very convenient. The sound quality here will not beat out a pair of noise cancelling headphones, but it’s usually pretty good for those who like listen on the go.

As always, know weigh the pros and cons of all possible options and make the right choice on what is going to work best for you, your music listening habits, and your wallet.

Some Car Seats are Less Intimidating to Use than Others

By Valerie Baldowski
Some Car Seats are Less Intimidating to Use than Others

There are oodles of car seats on the market but not all of them are user-friendly. Some are pretty expensive, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re easy to install quickly when you’re in a hurry to travel with your baby or toddler. We’ve talked about the lightest, but what most parents want to know is how easy they are to buckle up in the back seat. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has some answers in its “Ease of Use” ratings list.

The NHTSA categorizes the ratings from best to worst, with five stars for excellent and one star for poor or substandard features. All types of child restraint systems are rated, including infant, convertible, combination seats, 3-in-1, and even booster seats. Some brands of car seats rate better than others. The seats are evaluated according to:

  1. How easy the labeling is to read and decipher
  2. How simple the instructions are to understand
  3. How secure the child is when buckled into the seat
  4. The usefulness of the seats’ installation features
  5. The overall ease in using it

Three infant seats that rate five stars for overall ease of use are The 1st Years Via, the Evenflo Secure Ride 35 and the Evenflo Serenade.

  • The 1st Years comes out on top all around, with five-star ratings in all categories, although there is some constructive criticism listed. The seat has a five-point safety harness, but there are less than three harness adjustment heights. Also, it’s hard to find the user’s manual, and the instructions are hard to follow.
  • The Secure Ride 35 tops many of the others overall, with five-star ratings in the Installation Features, Securing the Child and Instructions categories. There are some drawbacks, though. The seat’s LATCH storage area isn’t labeled clearly, and the belt routing path is hard to read and not all parts are labeled. The labels also don’t explain how to use the LATCH system. For this reason the seat only rated three stars under the Evaluation of Labels category.
  • The Serenade also gets a generally favorable review as well as outstanding ratings in the Installation Features and Securing the Child categories. Where it falters is in the Instructions and Labeling categories, where it receives a four-star and three-star rating, respectively. The manual attached to the child restraint is in a hard-to-find place, plus it provides incomplete information on the types of vehicle seat belts.

Among the worst offenders are the Safety 1st Starter and the Safety 1st Designer 22.

  • The Starter only received a one-star overall rating. It has multiple problems, such as the way the LATCH attachments are fastened. Removing the attachments from the lower anchors in the car means considerable twisting and turning. There’s no dedicated storage area for the pieces that make up the LATCH system, and attaching or removing the car seat from the base is a struggle. As far as securing the baby, the harness clip is not labeled, and a head hugger/body pillow blocks the harness slots, making them hard to see.
  • Like the other Safety 1st car seat, the Designer 22 is only able to capture one star in its dismal overall rating. It has many of the same problems the Starter has, plus it has no helpful labeling to indicate what position the car seat handle should be in when transporting it in the vehicle. There’s no picture of a child correctly buckled in the car seat to look at as a guide, and there’s no information given to help parents and caregivers find the proper fit when buckling up the child.

Some of the easiest to use convertible car seats include The 1st Years True Fit Recline, both front-facing and rear-facing.

  • The True Fit Recline rear-facing seat earns five-star ratings for securing the child, clear instructions and easy-to-understand labeling. But even these don’t escape some suggestions on how to improve. To convert the seat, a series of steps must be followed, and apparently it’s complicated enough to bring out the user’s manual to consult. Also, to route the seat belt, the padding on the car seat must be lifted. Finally, although the seat says it reclines, there aren’t enough recline levels to the seat. On the forward-facing seat, the required consumer warnings are placed in an inconspicuous place on the seat, or not illustrated in the owner’s manual like it should be.

Some of the convertible seats receiving a low rating include Safety 1st Uptown and Sunshine Kids Radian 80, both front-facing and rear-facing.

  • On the overall rating, the Safety 1st rear-facing seat only received one star. The NHTSA gave it a one-star rating on installation features, instructions and labeling. It received only a two-star rating on securing the child. The forward-facing seat does better, but not by much. It gets two stars for overall performance and four stars for installation features, but only one star for labeling and two for clear instructions and securing the child.
  • Both the rear-facing and forward facing Sunshine Kids seats only managed to snag a two-star overall rating. The rear-facing model earned two-star ratings in securing the child and labeling and four stars for instructions, but only one star for installation, The forward-facing model somehow managed to get four stars in that category and three for securing the child, but only one star for clearly-written instructions.

Wireless Headphones Buying Guide

Understanding Sound Quality When Buying Wireless Headphones

With a world gone wireless, wireless headphones are to be expected. It’s a huge plus not to have wires dangling from your ears as you run or walk. These headphones mainly work through Bluetooth connections and use rechargeable batteries. There is the added headache of needing a Bluetooth compatible device, but many new smartphones have it available. Sound quality is another issue with wireless headphones. It is not going to be as rich as a wired pair. Freedom of movement is the trade off which can be very useful in many situations.

Whether you’re a casual music listener or an avid collector of sound equipment, it’s worthwhile to review the basics of sound quality so you understand what manufacturers are talking about when they claim their headphones are the best.

Sound perception varies from person to person. The best way to select new headphones is to try them out yourself at the store. Because everyone has different shaped heads and ears, they’ll perceive music and sound differently, especially since headphones pipe music directly into the ears. Hence, it’s important to try on different headphones not only to see which ones are comfortable to wear, but to get an idea of how rich and full the music sounds.

Consider the following questions to determine if you would benefit from wireless headphones:

  • Do you exercise with music often?
  • Do you want to use headphones at a computer or with a TV where it wouldn’t be practical to have wired headphones?
  • Wireless headphones double as Bluetooth headsets for hands free calling.

For long periods of use, you need a comfortable fit. Wireless headphones are usually very lightweight, but it’s important to make sure you’re comfortable wearing a set for an extended time. Padded surfaces are a must—including the headband. With circumaural headphones, you want a good seal over the ears, but make sure it’s not so tight that it puts undue pressure on your ears and head. Some headphones make your ears heat up or feel tingly if you wear them too long.

Understanding Other Sound Terms

Frequency: Headphones capture the complete range of sounds that humans can hear, from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. The question is how well they reproduce those frequencies. Any low frequencies below 20 Hz aren’t audible, but you can sometimes feel them.

Sensitivity: Headphones measure their loudness efficiency in terms of decibels per milliwatt of power. You want a high sensitivity number of at least 100 dB if you’re using a portable device. The lower the sensitivity, the harder the headphones have to work to sound as loud as those with high sensitivity.

Impedance: Impedance is measured in ohms and it relates to how much resistance the headphones put on an amplifier. Most headphones for professional and commercial use have impedances under 100 ohms. The higher the impedance, the more power you’ll need.
