Features That Improve Cleaning Efficiency in Dishwashers
Most modern dishwashers operate on the same principles: Dishes arranged in a box are sprayed with jets of water to remove grease and food particles. Whether it’s a countertop or a built-in model, leftover water returns to the kitchen drain system. There are standard features that appear in nearly every type of dishwasher: racks for holding dishes, jet systems, and washing arms. However, there are other special features that can enhance the cleaning performance. You may find that these convenient features are worth the extra price.
Tub material
Older dishwasher models were typically made of enamel-coated metal. The enamel would crack over time, however. Modern dishwashers have either plastic or stainless steel tubs. The plastic is fairly durable, but stainless steel looks nicer, causes fewer vibrations, and allows for super-hot sanitizing cycles.
Jet Sprays and Wash Arms
All dishwashers have jets that stay in place and shoot out water during a cycle. There are also washing arms under each rack that spin around to spray water in all directions, ensuring that every dish is reached. A dishwasher may have one to three washing arms. Other models instead have a central tower that comes out of the upper rack and rotates. The downside to the tower is that it takes up space in the upper rack, and it’s frustrating to try to fit glasses around it.
Wash Cycles
Different dishwasher models offer different wash cycles. Some people are content with just the most basic wash cycles: light, normal, and heavy. However, you may be interested in additional wash programs that specially handle loads of pots and pans, fine china, and glassware. If you’re particular about how your dishes are cleaned, you may spring for a dishwasher that has a gentle wash for wine glasses and a heavy wash for really dirty pots and pans. Sophisticated wash cycles can eliminate wine stains, streaky glasses, and baked-on food residue. Just be honest with yourself: If you typically mix all those types of dishes together into one load, you probably shouldn’t pay extra for special wash cycles you won’t use.
Sanitizing Cycles
Many dishwasher models proudly advertise their NSF-certified sanitizing cycles. These dishwashers can heat water up to 160° to 165°F; that’s hot enough not only to clean dishes but also to kill the most common bacteria. If you’re a parent of small children, you’ll appreciate a sanitizing cycle for your little one’s germ-covered sippy cups and pacifiers.
Delayed Start
If you’ve ever had a noisy dishwasher, you know it’s best to run it during the night or some other time of day when it won’t disturb the family. Many dishwasher brands have designed delayed start features that hold off a wash cycle for varying lengths of time. This way you can program the cycle whenever and be assured that it runs when it’s supposed to.
Single Rack Wash
We all know that running a less-than-full load is a waste of water and energy. But with the new single rack wash cycle, you can still get a smaller amount of dishes clean with the appropriate amount of water. This is very handy because sometimes it’s just not feasible or convenient to wait for a full load of dishes to run.
Automatic Soil Sensors
Dishwashers aren’t just becoming better at cleaning dishes, but they’re also getting smarter. With soil sensors, the dishwasher automatically detects how clean or dirty the water splashing around the tub is. If it’s too dirty, the dishwasher will drain it and spray clean jets of water. If the water isn’t very soiled, the dishwasher will shorten its wash cycle, saving you water and energy costs. With this highly efficient system, a household can save up to 600 gallons of water a year.
Flexible Racks
Without adjustable racks, it can be a real challenge fitting in that extra-large pot or those baking sheets. If you can adjust the height of the upper rack or remove it all together, you’ll have much more flexibility in arranging dishes to maximize space. Many dishwashers today also offer fold-down tines, moveable silverware baskets, and stemware holders to make securing special items easier. The more space options you have, the easier it will be to fully load the dishwasher, saving you time, power costs, and frustration.
Rinse Aid Dispensers
Many people add rinse aids to cut down on detergent residue. Some dishwasher models make it even easier to add rinse aids with a dispenser that stores up to a full bottle at a time and releases the appropriate amount per load. This feature saves you the time and hassle of adding rinse aids every time you run the dishwasher.
Two Water Pumps
Dishwashers with two water pumps, one for washing and one for draining, are quieter, more efficient, and typically last longer.
Selecting a new dishwasher doesn’t have to be a bewildering, confusing ordeal. If you do your homework and know in advance which features you want, you can narrow down your choices and pick the dishwasher that’s perfect for you and gives you years of satisfactory performance.

Decide What You Want in a Mattress for Your Baby’s Crib
Crib basics include infant blankets and sheets, hanging mobiles, and of course a mattress that fits snugly against the side of the crib. A few crib manufacturers sell the mattress with the crib, but most are sold separately. Now parents must decide whether to purchase a traditional natural or an organic crib mattress. What’s the difference between the two?
Some marketers say organic crib mattresses are free of toxic chemicals. The working definition of organic is a crib mattress made from 100 percent organic cotton certified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The mattress can be used two ways. The firmer side is designed for cribs, and flipping it over brings up the less firm side for toddler beds. Its cover is antibacterial and water resistant, and air vents in the mattress keep it odor-free.
Parents considering an organic mattress for their baby’s crib should know that organic mattress standards are regulated by the National Association of Organic Mattress Industry (NAOMI). According to NAOMI, organic mattress manufacturers must conform to standards requiring mattresses to be 95 percent chemical-free. Those extremely sensitive to chemicals, however, could still have problems sleeping on an organic mattress.
NAOMI has a long list of standards mattresses must meet in order to be called “organic.” Some of them include:
- It must be free of synthetic fabrics.
- No fabrics can be treated with any chemical suspected of being toxic, even at low levels.
- All wool must be from sheep raised according to organic standards, and any wool used must not contain any arsenic or lead.
- Any rubber used must be free of benzene, toluene, pthalates, SBR, petroleum additives, formaldehyde and arsenic, and the lead level must be under .001 parts per million (ppm).
- Any glue used must not have formaldehyde or phenolated compounds, and the presence of glue must be disclosed.
By comparison, “natural” mattresses are those that are made strictly from natural components, such as cotton, wool, natural silk or fleece. No materials such as polyester, vinyl cloth, acrylic cloth or memory foam can be used in a natural mattress. The foam in the mattress must be natural latex, or else the mattresses can’t be called “natural.”
Prices for organic crib mattresses run higher. Depending on the retailer or the merchant, natural mattresses sell for anywhere in the $29 to $85 price range. Organic mattresses usually go for about $80 to $259. Both types of mattresses have their pros and cons. In the end, the final decision will rest with the individual consumer about what type of crib mattress is best for their baby.

How important is Green Tech in Washing Machines and Dryers; Whirpool Asks, Surveys
The public is more attuned to energy saving measures than ever before, as a late 2008 survey conducted by Whirlpool shows. Surveying over 2000 people of all ages and demographics, Whirlpool made a number of surprising discoveries:
- 84% of respondents named energy, not time or water, as the most important factor in home appliance efficiency.
- 72% said they look for the Energy Star label on an appliance before making a purchase.
- Consumers want high efficiency appliances but were unaware that HE washers are available in both top loading and front loading styles.
- Respondents age 18 to 44 named an HE washer as their ideal laundry room choice, while consumers age 45 and up wanted ergonomically-friendly appliances. Hence why manufacturers are increasingly offering machines with pedestals and larger dials and buttons.
- More respondents who are married or previously married (61% and 64%, respectively) understand the benefits of eco-friendly appliances than younger, never-been-married consumers (51%).
The results may be surprising, but they’re encouraging, too. People today are generally more eco-conscious and willing to pay more for HE appliances. Now it’s up to manufacturers like Whirlpool to fully educate consumers about energy-saving methods so they can make the best informed choices.

Cleaning a Touchscreen with a Microfiber Cloth
The touchscreen on your smartphone or tablet lets you operate the gadget with ease, but it also picks up unattractive fingerprints and smudges that can be difficult to wipe off with a basic cloth. Microfiber cloths are designed to lift off these oily marks and leave the screen clear and polished. Many microfiber cloths clean touchscreens without requiring water or liquid cleaners. Always check the instructions for the best cleaning procedure.
The Toddy is one such microfiber cloth that works on all touchscreens and doesn’t require moistening sprays. Toddy cloths come in a variety of bright, colorful patterns. They’re two-sided; the textured side cleans the touchscreen, lifting off fingerprints and smudges, and the smooth, patterned side lets you buff and polish the screen afterward.
Microfiber cloths vary in price. If you’re trying to save money, see if your smartphone or tablet comes with a microfiber cloth, or use one that came with your eyeglasses or sunglasses.

The Benefits of a Touchscreen Stylus
By JB Burden
Why do you need a stylus if your smartphone or tablet screen responds to your finger? Well, there are several benefits to using a stylus, the most notable one being that it cuts down on the fingerprint smudges. You’ll definitely appreciate making your high tech gadget look more attractive.
Other advantages:
- A stylus lets you operate a touchscreen when you’re wearing gloves.
- A stylus fits easily in a pocket or purse; some clip to books, tablet cases, or the device itself.
- Users with long fingernails will be able to tap the screen with a stylus easier than with their fingers.
- Touchscreens are especially sensitive and responsive to styluses.
A stylus also works on resistive screens like ATMs and credit card kiosks, meaning you don’t have to touch the germy screens with your hand. - Universal styluses work on any smartphone, tablet, e-reader, or tablet screen, making them all-purpose tools for your electronic gadgets.

The Best Features to Have in Your Microwave Oven
Today’s microwave ovens are getting fancier and more versatile, offering various special features that promise quick, satisfactory cooking results for nearly any type of food. It can be overwhelming for a shopper who’s trying to pick out a new microwave to decide which features are necessary and which are cool or spiffy but not really necessary. What follows is a brief run-down of some of the most essential microwave functions you should look for and why they’re important.
Rotating turntable
The turntable, or carousel, of a microwave is a plate, usually glass or ceramic, that rotates so the food placed on it heats evenly. Some people appreciate an on/off switch for the turntable when they want to heat up a large pan and don’t want it hitting the sides of the wall as it rotates.
Adjustable rack
Racks give you even more space for microwaving dishes. For the most versatility and to make the most of your microwave space, adjustable or removable racks are really helpful.
Sensor cooking
Ask yourself what you primarily use the microwave for. Do you commonly use it for popcorn, baked potatoes, soup, pizza, and similar food items? If so, you may want a microwave that offers one-touch sensor buttons that automatically detect how much time and power these foods need to cook properly.
High wattage
A microwave’s wattage determines how quickly the food heats. Some have a wattage as low as 300, but these are not very powerful. To get the most efficient cooking power, look for models with at least 1,000 watts. Even some moderately priced microwaves have high wattage levels, so you don’t have to compromise performance for cost.
Filter
If your microwave isn’t vented to the outside, then it needs a filter to recirculate air and remove steam and odor. Charcoal filters are a common accessory.
Different power levels
Most microwaves offer up to 10 power levels, but what does that mean exactly? Changing the power level does not actually alter the intensity of the radiation, but determines how often the magnetron is turned on (i.e., 10 percent of the time for every power level). Following the power level table found in the owner’s manual will help you optimize your cooking experience.
Quick defrost
Defrosting frozen meats and vegetables usually takes time and can often be unpredictable. No one likes it when the food comes out mushy in some parts and still frozen in others. A good microwave should include a quick defrost setting that thaws food evenly. Even better are models that determine the best defrost time and power level based on the weight of the food you enter in.
Whether you want a convection oven that bakes dishes and pizzas or a basic model that you use for popcorn and quick reheats, there’s a microwave out there with just the right features for you.

When Comparing Crib Models and Styles, Choose Safety First
Glitzy made-to-order cribs don’t necessarily equate to a safe bed for your infant. Many, if not most, high-end cribs have no consumer safety certification readily available. Childrens products manufacturers recognized for their effective marketing techniques or one-of-a-kind unique products can slip under the radar of the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association.
Heart-shaped, round, metal and designer cribs are regularly sold online for thousands of dollars, but finding information on the manufacturer or inspecting the product before buying is difficult. Many of the items marketed come with the warning that sales are final and there are no order cancellations or refunds. But as long as there is demand for such products, they will continue to be sold.
Wooden Cribs
- The Little Miss Liberty Millennium Canopy, with a price tag of $770, is billed as the “latest and greatest version of the crib that started the revolution in the baby industry.” The tall posts accommodate a canopy, but it is low enough to fit under an eight-foot ceiling. It has a multi-positional base with safety locks.
- The Little Miss Liberty Duetta Twin, on sale for $1,610, is a dual round crib designed for twins. It converts into individual cribs or expands if space for another baby is needed. The crib includes canopy kits as well as multi-position bases to adjust the height of the crib. A larger version, the Duetta Triplet Round, is on sale for $2,660.
- The Little Miss Liberty Carousel Rocking Horse, selling for between $1,750 and $1,896, is a round crib with a hand painted replica carousel horse mounted to the crib, plus removable rockers.
Iron Cribs
- For $1,190, the custom-made Addison Scroll Round Iron is decorated with detailed scrollwork, and is designed to be the focal point of the nursery. The crib is 46 inches in diameter, has a non-toxic finish and the round mattress is included. The same model with a canopy runs $1,590.
- The Little Miss Liberty Aviary Round has tall posters to accommodate a canopy. It’s priced between $1,750 and $2,100, and it fits under an eight-foot ceiling. It has fancy scrollwork at the top of the dome, is 45 inches in diameter and weighs 194 pounds. Be warned: if you’re willing to pay the price tag, the marketer says this crib comes with double drop sides.
- One of the highest priced iron cribs is the Corsican Versailles Garden Iron Crib, priced online for $2,960. The dimensions are 30 by 54 by 63 inches. Originally manufactured with a drop-side, modifications were made and it is now made with a fixed side.
Heart Shaped/Metal Cribs
- The Little Miss Liberty Baby Dear Heart-Shaped sells for between $1,399, and $2,198. It comes with its own canopy kit and mattress. It has a multi-positional locking base for height adjustment and is formaldehyde-free. This crib also comes in a twin size for $4,398.
- For a truly fancy effect, Little Miss Liberty makes the Crystal Round, for the fancy price of $2,899. Made of metal, the Crystal Round has plexiglass spindles to reflect the light, giving the appearance of a sparkling chandelier in the nursery. Again, despite the ban on drop-side cribs the marketer says this one has double drop-sides.

Buying a Dishwasher: Is it Better to Shop Online or at the Store?
As you begin your search for a new dishwasher, you’re probably considering a couple important question: How can I find a high-quality model at a reasonable price? With dishwashers, you tend to get what you pay for, so unless you’re on a tight budget you should consider the performance of the less important models. You may save a couple hundred dollars but end up with less-than-pristine dishes. Rewashing them by hand will only cost you more with the energy bill and increase your dish washing time.
So you want a satisfactory dishwasher, but you don’t know whether it’s better to shop for one online or in person at the store. There are advantages and disadvantages to both approaches. The first step you should take, however, before shopping anywhere, is to do your homework: Figure out how much space you have for a dishwasher and what features you must have. This way, you’ll be less easily swayed to purchase a model with flashy features you don’t need and won’t use.
Visiting the Store
When you actually visit an appliance store, you have the advantage of looking at, touching, and examining dishwasher models up close. There are qualities you may find that you wouldn’t notice on a computer screen, such as how the door latches shut, how easily the racks slide out, and whether the tines fold down easily. Do the controls look like they’re easy to navigate, or are they overwhelmingly complicated?
Salespeople are also available at stores to answer your questions. Their expertise and knowledge about the product can be hit-or-miss, depending on the store, but you should be able to tell if they truly know what they’re talking about or if they’re just trying to sell you something you don’t need. Some tips to make the store experience easier:
- Don’t be intimidated by salespeople; they genuinely want to help you find something.
- If you know in advance what you’re looking for, you’re less likely to be talked into buying something you won’t like.
- Be prepared with questions and specific features you’re looking for.
- Examine the models yourself or ask for a demonstration. Don’t simply listen to the salesperson’s spiel.
- Find out about warranties, returns, delivery and shipping methods.
Remember, if you’re not satisfied with the salesperson’s help or information, consult another person or try another store.
Shopping Online
While it’s beneficial to go to stores and look at dishwasher models in person, you should hold off buying one right away. Go home and give yourself time to think over your options. This is also the time to look up models you liked online and read more about them. Confirm what the salespeople told you about their features and performance and read consumer reviews to get an idea of the pros and cons.
Consumer reviews can be very useful, but take them with a grain of salt. People may rave about their purchase and have nothing negative to say. These reviews sound encouraging, but consider that people tend to justify their purchases, especially for high-end models. Also check to see how long they have had the machine. Some models work great for the first year or so, then start to have mechanical problems. It’s difficult to know how durable a dishwasher will be and how long it will work properly; if there are several reviews highlighting design flaws, take caution.
There are certain advantages to shopping online. For instance:
- There are no salespeople pressuring you to make up your mind and buy something.
- You can take your time to review all the specifications and features and compare models.
- Online stores have a wider selection of brands, models, and color options, some that you can’t find at your local appliance store.
- Online sites frequently offer special deals, discounts, and rebates.
- Some have 24-hour support lines with representatives that can answer your questions.
It’s crucial to research, ask questions, and shop around before making a final decision. The more informed you are, the more likely you’ll find a dishwasher that satisfies all your requirements and provides years of quality performance.

New Steam Cleaning Washing Machines Enter Market
In recent years, the big appliance brands (Whirlpool, Kenmore, LG, Samsung, and Maytag) have rolled out washing machines with a new feature: steam cleaning. With all the benefits steam offers for cleaning clothes, it’s surprisingly they didn’t introduce this technology sooner. With a steam cleaning washer, you can cut out those trips to the drycleaner and, even better, not compromise water and energy conservation.
Steam is a powerful sanitizing method. The hot vapor rehydrates clothes and kills bacteria that produce musty odors. Thus, it’s tough on stains and smells, but as gentle as it is penetrating. Additionally, it takes out wrinkles.
Many of these steam washers have humidity sensors that detect moisture in clothes, so you don’t pull out damp or overheated laundry. The best feeling of all: pulling out fresh, nice smelling clothes, clean and wrinkle-free.

Take Care when Choosing an Alternative to a Crib for Baby
Most consumers searching for the right type of infant bed will choose a crib, but the alternatives to a traditional crib are Moses baskets, cradles and bassinets. Unlike cribs, Moses baskets and bassinets have no federal regulations to ensure their safety. Parents who prefer them have some safety tips to follow.
- Just like when shopping for a crib, it’s best to buy bassinets and Moses baskets new, and avoid accepting hand-me-down heirloom cradles or bassinets. Looking for certification by the American Society for Testing and Materials and the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association, and checking for a recall history, will help make a more informed decision.
- Using only the mattress and mattress pad provided by the manufacturer, and the fitted sheet specifically designed to fit the bassinet’s mattress or pad, will ensure the baby’s safety. Avoid using a pillowcase or different size sheet.
- To protect against accidents, do not leave the baby unattended in a rocking cradle. Never use a bassinet with the wheels unlocked, or carry or move a cradle with the child in it.
- Keep strings or dangling cords to blinds or curtains away from the cradle. Keeping the cords too short for the baby to reach, and positioning a mobile far enough above the bassinet so the baby can’t reach it, are similar to the safety tips for standard cribs.
The advantage to Moses baskets, bassinets and cradles is space-related, and they are convenient for parents who don’t have room for a full size crib. But taking into account how fast babies grow, these smaller baby beds won’t be in use for long before being retired. There are some features to compare.
- Some bassinets can convert into a changing table, or even attach to an adult bed to make it into a bedside sleeper. Others can be used as toy boxes when the baby outgrows it.
- Other bassinet models feature motion that full size cradles don’t offer. They can be converted into a cradle with a quick-release latch and retractable wheels, so the unit can rock or glide.
- By their very construction, they are more portable than cribs. Some have handles allowing them to be carried and moved, while others have wheels like cribs.
- Some mobiles for cradles and bassinets feature soothing music or heartbeat sounds with volume control, plus lights and rotating toys.
- The canopy over the bassinet blocks the light and protects from the sun. Sometimes it’s removable, but avoid lacy or frilly canopies as they pose a strangulation hazard for the infant.
Thoroughly inspect the unit before buying, to make sure it has a sturdy bottom, a wide base, sides that are meshy but firm and folding mechanisms that lock into place. Bassinets and cradles are temporary infant beds with a short life span, and can only be safely used until the baby can roll over or begin trying to push himself up. The maximum weight most cradles, Moses beds or bassinets can safely hold is between 15 to 18 pounds.
When shopping for Moses Beds, cradles and bassinets, keep in mind that many Moses baskets are imported from mainland China. Measurements and dimensions will be in centimeters and kilograms, making it more difficult to compare with U.S. made beds described in inches and pounds. Ordering an infant bed online from an overseas manufacturer is one adventure many U.S. consumers may understandably want to avoid.

How Convection Microwave Ovens Work
If you’ve been shopping for a new microwave, you’ve probably noticed some more expensive models that offer convection cooking. If you’re like me, you may have initially wondered what convection microwave ovens do and why they’re pricier than standard microwaves.
Put simply, convection microwave ovens use a fan to circulate hot air inside the microwave, browning and crisping food at lower temperatures. Other benefits of convection cooking include:
- Faster baking and roasting
- Keeping meats juicy instead of drying them out
- More evenly cooked food
The theory behind convection cooking goes like this: With hot air constantly blowing on food, not just surrounding it, the food tends to cook faster. The chemical processes that occur when food cooks also become quicker; thus, pastries turn out flakier, meat retains its juices, and vegetables have a crispy outside and moist, flavorful inside. Also helpfully, convection microwave ovens cut down cooking time by about 25 percent.
As anyone who has ever baked cookies in a conventional oven knows, the cookies can vary in consistency based on whether they were on the top rack or the bottom rack. Convection ovens eliminate that inconsistency, evenly browning food no matter where it’s located in the oven. With hot air circulating evenly throughout the oven interior, you’ll get food baked or roasted uniformly and won’t have to worry about those tricky hot or cold spots with each mouthful.

8 Steps to Saving Energy with your Dishwasher
Everyone wants a dishwasher that cleans and sanitizes dishes effectively. In today’s environmentally conscious world, many people also want to save energy with their dishwasher. With just a few minor adjustments to how you operate the machine, you can save considerably on energy costs.
- Wash full loads. Your dishwasher will use the same amount of water whether it’s half full or completely full, so you should cut down the number of washes by running only full loads.
- At the same time, don’t overload the dishwasher. It’s tempting to stuff it full, especially after big holiday dinners, but you’ll likely get a less effective cleaning and have to rewash dishes.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for loading the dishwasher. We all have our preferences for how we arrange the dishes, but you can make the most of energy and water use by filling the racks correctly and allowing for proper water flow.
- Let dishes air dry. Turn off the heated-dry option if your dishwasher allows it, and open the door a crack to let the dishes dry. This method takes longer and may leave more water spots, but try it to see if you’re satisfied with the results.
- Run the shortest cycle that still produces clean dishes. Save heavy duty washes for only the dirtiest, most soiled loads.
- Set the water heater at 120°F for the most efficient wash. Any colder than this temperature won’t do a good job sanitizing the dishes, and any hotter uses unnecessary energy.
- Pre-rinse dishes at a minimum. Modern dishwashers don’t require you to rinse off more than the most solid foods before loading dishes, so you can save the water. Simply scraping is even better.
- Make a habit of loading dishes throughout the day rather than washing them by hand. Unless you use the bare minimum of water to hand wash dishes, it’s more efficient to let the dishwasher do its job at the end of the day. Amazingly, most modern machines use only three to ten gallons of water per wash.

New DOE Standards for Calculating Drum Capacity in Washing Machines
As of April 30, 2011, all manufacturers of washing machines must report drum capacity using testing procedures established by the Department of Energy (DOE). These standardized means of calculating washer volume will provide consistent and accurate data for consumers. Hence, all washing machines sold today, regardless of when they were manufactured, will have uniform DOE capacity measurements.
All the major washer manufacturers are participating, including LG, Whirlpool, Samsung, and GE. Some companies are updating their product information online and in print to reflect the new DOE standards for calculating drum volume.
What does this mean for consumers? They will have access to precise and uniform capacity measurements, which will help them make educated decisions when selecting a high quality washer. Because drum volume determines energy and water consumption, consumers can choose an energy efficient model with confidence.

A Blender Brand Comparison: Vitamix Vs. Blendtec
Two of the biggest brand names when it comes to blenders are Vitamix and Blendtec. The reason these two brands are also the most expensive is because they offer such versatility and performance. Not only can their blenders crush ice and make smoothies, but they are equipped to prepare complicated sauces and soups. The powerful blades create enough friction to heat these dishes up without a microwave or stove!
Because Vitamix and Blendtec are the top competing brands, it’s valuable to compare some of their finer points and features.
Vitamix
Supplying blenders at the highest end of the price spectrum, up to $600, Vitamix models are suitable for commercial use as well as in your home. Some of their obvious benefits come down to size, power, and control options. Consider the following facts:
- Vitamix blenders typically feature an extra-large blending jar of 64 ounces, or half a gallon. That’s more than enough space to mix up large portions of soups, sauces, smoothies, and dressings.
- The horsepower of Vitamix motors is staggering. With a 2 HP motor, a blender’s blades can reach up to 29,000 rpm, which is fast enough to pulverize anything that comes in its path.
- Vitamix blenders have preprogrammed settings that automatically get the best blending results for soups, smoothies, and frozen treats. These one-touch controls take the guesswork out of preparing the most popular blended dishes.
Additional bonus features typically include a recipe book and a DVD with instructions and tips. A 7-year warranty guarantees your satisfaction with the appliance.
Of course, there are always a couple downsides to any product. With such a powerful motor, for instance, a Vitamix blender is very loud at the highest speed setting. While this is an aggravating element, it thankfully doesn’t last long because the blender mixes foods so quickly. The newest models are also quite large and too tall to fit under low-hanging cabinets. You may have to store it in a cabinet or leave the jar sitting next to the base.
Blendtec
Blendtec blenders are also expensive, generally in the $500 range, but they offer so many purposes and functions to justify the high cost. Professional chefs appreciate the series’ features, as do amateur gourmands at home. Blendtec’s primary attributes are durability, power, and precision. For instance:
- With strong, durable stainless steel blades, Blendtec blenders can grind hard stuff like coffee beans and ice without wearing down over time.
- At the same time, the blenders can handle the precise control needed to make fine gourmet soups and sauces.
- Functioning as food processors as well as blenders with 1,500-watt motors and 10 speeds, Blendtec models are even capable of kneading dough.
Some models, like the Blendtec TB-621-20, have the additional bonus of an automatic shut-off feature that stops the blades when the preprogrammed cycle is complete. This feature gives you the freedom to move around the kitchen instead of hovering over the blender while it works. Blendtec blenders also come with a recipe book, user instructions, and three-year warranties.
As with Vitamix, the Blendtec models have such powerful motors that they also make an incredible roar. This factor could pose a problem if you like to entertain at night or have sleeping family members nearby. However, you can’t discount the Blendtec series’ impressive ability to grind, pulverize, and liquefy nearly anything.

Waterproof Housing for Camcorders
By Brian Jones
While the waterproof camcorder has quickly become a popular video recording device, with more models being developed each year, you still may have trouble finding a wide selection of the devices. If you already own a camcorder but envy the waterproof camcorder’s ability to record video in rugged environments, then consider purchasing a waterproof housing for your model.
Several manufacturers offer waterproof housing for their camcorders on their websites. The clear molded plastic fits over the camcorder and seals it tight against water and dust. Some waterproof housings allow you to take the camcorder down farther than 10 feet underwater. There are a few drawbacks, naturally:
- Not every make and model will have a waterproof housing that fits.
- They can be expensive, some as expensive as the camcorder itself.
- You can’t easily access all the camcorder features, like touchscreen displays.

Features to Expect from Hand Mixers in Various Price Ranges
A hand mixer is a simple, convenient kitchen appliance that saves you some time and effort mixing, beating, or whipping food. While generally not as heavy-duty as a stand mixer or a blender, a hand mixer still possesses more power than your arm with a spoon. You can find basic, no-fuss mixers for as low as $15. There are mid-range hand mixers that run up to $50 and feature a stronger motor and more accessories. The fanciest models come with even more wattage, speeds, and special tools to tackle any type of mixing task. They can range from $50 to $100.
As you shop for a hand mixer, you should have a fair idea of what features and qualities to expect from a model in a low, medium, or high price range.
Low-priced models
These hand mixers will do a decent job with most mixing tasks and should hold up with moderate use. The most common functions—beating eggs, mixing mashed potatoes, and blending cake batter—shouldn’t be a problem for a basic hand mixer. They’re not completely bare-bones when it comes to features, either. Consider some of these available options:
- Durable plastic housing
- Up to 6 speeds controlled by a single switch
- Cord storage
- Comfortable ergonomic grip
- Beater ejection button
- Whisk attachments
- Storage case for accessories
Mid-priced models
A more expensive model generally means a more powerful motor. Pay attention to a hand mixer’s wattage to get an idea of how strong it is against dense materials. It should have at least 220 watts to justify the higher price. Other special features you should look for include:
- Swivel cord for either-handed users
- Extra-long stainless steel beaters that can be cleaned in the dishwasher
- Additional attachments like dough hooks, whisks, and milkshake blender rods
- Bonuses like a spatula or stainless steel mixing bowl
- Instructional and/or recipe book
- A heel rest for setting the hand mixer down
High-priced models
With a top-of-the-line hand mixer, you should receive the most power and versatility when it comes to mixing speeds. Expensive models typically have a sturdy metal housing that’s sleeker in appearance than plastic. Other qualities you can find with high-priced hand mixers include:
- Powerful motors ranging from 240 to 290 watts
- Dishwasher-safe accessories like balloon whisks, dough hooks, and drink blender rods
- Digital displays and/or timers
- Power burst button or automatic feedback
- A slow start that avoids splattering food
- Extra-strong turbo beaters
- More fun color options
- Mixing load sensors
