Should Children Play with Smartphones?
More and more parents today are handing over their smart phones and tablets to their children. Kids are little pros when it comes to pulling up videos, downloading apps, and navigating the other various features of these smart devices. But you have to consider the pros and cons of letting your young ones play with these expensive adult toys.
The good
When you’re on a car trip, waiting for a table at a restaurant, or otherwise doing something a child would find tedious, it’s easy to hand over an electronic device to keep the kid quiet and occupied. Having an electronic babysitter isn’t necessarily a bad thing; it’s just important to establish limits and rules. No toys at the dinner table or church, for instance.
There are educational benefits to letting kids play with smart phones and tablets, too. You just have to know where to find them. Apps designed to help kids with reading, math, and other academic subjects turn learning into challenging games. Anything that makes a child eager to practice the multiplication tables can’t be a bad thing, right? Especially when it means operating a spaceship and saving the planet from aliens (see the game Math Evolve).
Devices like the iPad and Kindle Fire also have undeniable benefits when it comes to children’s books. The wide, vividly colored screens allow you to share the joys of classic picture books with your kids. Some programs have read-along features that help children sound out words so they can learn to read on their own. Older kids can build up their own library of chapter books that they can access anywhere—on car rides, in the doctor’s waiting room, at night in bed.
There’s no denying that this smart technology has worked its way even into the classroom. Today’s children are using the technology that allows for gaming, texting, and online web surfing to discover more about the world around them. While that’s all well and good, there are also some drawbacks to consider.
The bad
Kids have had TVs and computers sucking up their brain cells for years now. Today we add smart phones and tablets to the mix, and you have portable devices that kids will always demand whenever they’re bored. As with any electronic device, too much time spent on the iPad playing Angry Birds or watching videos could potentially make your kid a mini tech addict. Studies have suggested that excessive time spent playing mindless apps could shorten kids’ attention spans.
Another thing you have to remember is that these are kids playing with expensive, fragile devices—adult toys. Unless you’re comfortable with the way your child handles your e-reader or smart phone, allowing for fingerprint smudges, baby slobber, and accidental drops, you may want to limit or supervise their using your tools. That, or invest in a sturdy protective case.
Smart solutions
There’s no barring children completely from smart technology. The see it, they like it, and they want to use it. But there are ways to structure the way kids use your smart phone or tablet so they’re not wasting hours of the day playing Paper Ball Toss.
You can enjoy story time on a smart device, but have a good-sized library of physical books in the house so your children won’t look at them like they’re from another planet.
You can set limits on play time and use smart phones as an incentive for good behavior. When a child does his or her chores, reads so many books, or is nice to a younger sibling, the child can earn play time on an electronic device. This way, both you and your kids stay happy.

Burr vs Blade Coffee Grinder
As you analyze the variety of coffee grinders available—electric, automatic, manual, blades, burrs—you may wonder which type is best for you and which type gives the best results. Let’s look at the different types.

Blade Grinders | |
Pros | Cons |
Easy to use with the press of a button | Not always consistent with fineness/coarseness of grounds |
Inexpensive (typically starting around $20) | If food processor-type grinder overheats the grounds, it can affect the flavor and aroma |
Portable | Noisy |
Also works on spices and nuts |

Burr Grinders | |
Pros | Cons |
More sophisticated | Pricier |
Conical burr grinders produce less heat than flat burr grinders—preserve the aroma of the coffee | Also noisy |
Ideal for espresso, percolated, and French press coffee | |
Gives greater control over fineness/coarseness |

Manual Crank Grinders These can come in blade and burr varieties |
|
Pros | Cons |
Fewer parts make them more durable than electric counterparts | Requires (some) physical labor, patience, and persistence |
Typically include ceramic or stainless steel parts that reduce static in the grounds—less mess | Most produce grounds suited only for drip coffee |
Consistent results | |
Less noisy |
Ultimately, burr grinders are for serious coffee aficionados. They’re more expensive than blade grinders, but produce more consistent, quality results.

5 Benefits of Play for Children
Children learn about the world around them and develop mentally and physically through play. Researchers have found that unstructured play not only keeps kids occupied and entertained, but it’s key to a children’s natural development. It’s so important, in fact, that in 1989 the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights designated play as a child’s natural right.
Children the world over find ways to play, even when they grow up in poverty-stricken, war-torn environments. Studies have consistently shown that play grants children healthy minds, bodies, and spirits. While toy manufacturers develop new technology, concepts, and designs, it’s ultimately the children who make the rules when it comes to playing with toys. They unlock a toy’s hidden properties like magic, sometimes in ways we would never expect, because of their limitless imaginations.
Consider what researchers have discovered about the “science” of play:
- Playing with toys allow children to unlock the mysteries of the world around them. Toddlers in particular soak up new concepts, ideas, and skills at an incredible pace. Toys help improve young children’s brain development.
- Children naturally try out adult roles as they play, which is why playing house is an age-old activity. By operating in a world of their own creation, kids prepare themselves for the real world on their own terms and in a safe, manageable environment.
- While organized sports and adult-supervised play have their own benefits, children still need unstructured play time to work out problems themselves and develop their own interests and passions. When children participate only in games structured by adults, they don’t learn how to develop and follow their own rules.
- Children who play together in an unstructured setting learn about fairness, sharing, resolving conflicts, compromising, and sticking up for themselves.
- When parents play with their children, they develop stronger bonds because the adults remember how differently children view the world. Parents can learn how to communicate with children on a level they’ll understand, and adults will be better able to offer guidance and nurturing.
While some schools have begun reducing play time to spend more time on academics, it’s crucial that children have enough opportunities to discover the world for themselves, work out their problems and fears, and develop cognitively, psychologically, and physically. The best way they can do this is through coloring, building with blocks, playing make-believe, and reading stories.

How to Use a Chef’s Knife
Whether you’re a professional or amateur cook, knowing how to use a chefs knife properly will save you a lot of time and effort, and be safer too. When you have a lot of meats, fish, or vegetables to go through, it’s helpful to know how to wield and maneuver the knife effectively.
The grip
Most people are used to gripping a knife by the handle—that’s what the handle is there for, right? Professional chefs actually learn to use a chefs knife by gripping the top of the blade with the thumb and forefinger, and wrapping the other fingers around the bolster. The tightest part of your hand should be at the thumb and index finger; the rest of the hand gently curls around the handle. This grip may seem uncomfortable or awkward at first, but it offers the greatest control and maneuverability.
The guiding hand
You may have initially balked at gripping the knife partially by the blade, but the hand that’s actually at risk of being cut is the guiding hand, which holds the food steady. There are ways to avoid cutting yourself, luckily. Keep your fingers curled inward, like a claw, with only the fingernails gripping the food. The edge of the blade can rest against your first knuckle to keep the knife perpendicular to the cutting board, but your fingertips will be safely out of the way.
Safety
Cuts are almost unavoidable if you spend hours in the kitchen and if you work quickly. Just remember to always cut away from yourself, and don’t go too fast until you’re comfortable with the grip and the chopping motion. Never secure the food with an awkward hand position that puts your fingers at risk or requires you to cut sideways.

Blu Ray Home Theater Systems: The Pros and Cons
Many home theater in a box audio systems today come with a built-in DVD or Blu-ray player. This simplifies things if you don’t already own one of these players, but what are some other benefits or perks to this feature?
Pros
- With Blu-ray players, even DVD content is “upconverted” to near HD quality, 1080p.
- It simplifies the setup.
- There is less wire and cable clutter.
- It keeps your electronics uniform and streamlined.
Cons
- It’s not essential and becomes extraneous if you already have a Blu-ray player or game console that plays these discs.
- You may become stuck with a particular Blu-ray/DVD player brand, when you may prefer having more options.
- It’s typically more expensive.
If the home theater in a box you select doesn’t have an integrated Blu-ray or DVD player, it’s not the end of the world. Simply make sure that the system’s inputs/outputs allow you to hook up whatever player you already have.

Tips for Choosing Kitchen Knives
So you’re in charge of your own kitchen now and you need to build up your collection of kitchen tools. As any professional or aspiring chef knows, the greatest tools you have at your disposal are knives. Different knives perform different functions, of course, be it chopping, mincing, dicing, slicing, paring, scooping, sawing, or deboning.
With knives, you generally get what you pay for. There are plenty of decent knives out there for reasonable prices. For better quality performance, however, you should expect to shell out more money. Before you make any expensive purchases you need to decide exactly what you need and how much you’re willing to pay for it.
Do you need a whole set?
One of the first decisions you should make is whether to look for one really good open stock knife or a complete knife set. Often this choice boils down to your budget. Knife sets can be really economical if you find a decent set for a fair price. But you may also just want a good chefs knife or a basic utility knife. Perhaps you already have a knife set but a piece or two broke or went missing, and you really just want to replace those.
While a fine-quality chefs or santoku knife can serve you well in the kitchen, handling most of the basic cutting tasks, it can also be quite expensive—sometimes more expensive than a basic knife set that offers a bit of everything: paring, bread, utility, and steak knives. Sets typically come with a sharpening steel so you can keep the edges fine and sharp. Another benefit of the knife set is the convenient knife block that stores and protects your knives and looks so fancy on the counter.
Regular or professional quality
It’s perhaps unfair to compare regular kitchen knives to professional knives, because the knives you find in most kitchens are perfectly adequate for the tasks they’re assigned. Professionals look for knife sets with extra fine edges and ceramic blades. These knives are top-quality, but they also require a lot of maintenance—more maintenance than they’re worth if you’re just a regular person looking for regular kitchen knives. Regular knives, while still great quality, are much easier to upkeep. The stainless steel kind hold up well, don’t stain or rust with proper care, and sharpen easily.
Picking the best knives
Sometimes what qualifies as the best in knives comes down to personal preference. Some people like a heavy, sturdy feel. Forged stainless steel blades with bolsters fit big hands well and feel powerful. Other people prefer a lighter feel, a bit more flexibility. Stamped blades tend to be a little lighter and easier to handle.
Handle material also comes into play.
- Wooden handles are attractive and traditional, but if they’re left in water too long they can crack or warp. Bacteria also likes to hide in the wood’s porous surface.
- Plastic handles are usually of some cushioned, non-slip material. They’re hygienic and look fine if you like a contemporary style.
- Some knife handles use a composite of wood and plastic, providing the heft and aesthetic appeal of one and the sanitary features of the other.
Ultimately, you’re the best judge when it comes to determining what works for you. Shop around, read reviews, and compare prices before making your final purchase. Whenever possible, go to a store and handle different knives yourself to get a feel for the weight, balance, and style you prefer.

Baby Crib Styles
Consumers searching for the right infant crib to buy are swamped with choices, but not all cribs are created equal. Compared to cradles, bassinets and Moses baskets, cribs are the safest alternative for babies. Cribs are regulated by the federal government, and many are certified by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA). Presently there are no uniform guidelines listed for bassinets, Moses baskets, cradles or co-sleepers. Overall, the simplest cribs are the best and safest.
Some manufacturers produce flashy, fancy round cribs to make the nursery look like a child’s dreamland, but those are expensive. The cost for a round crib can run into the thousands, and it’s a budget-busters for ordinary families. Also, compared to traditional cribs sold in stores, round cribs are harder to find. Try walking into your local Wal Mart, Target, Babies R Us or Toys R Us and trying to compare round cribs on display on the aisle. They are marketed on the internet, which is one way to compare prices and features of round cribs, but there are no federal safety standards or JPMA certifications available.
They may look nice, but other issues with round cribs are safety, convenience and affordability. Infants can become caught in fancy scrollwork and finials, and suffer injury or death. Round cribs also do not have adjustable mattress heights like traditional cribs do, and they cannot be converted into toddler or full size beds when the infant outgrows the crib. Considering the money spent on a round crib, it’s not much of a bargain. Parents who buy a round crib will need to shell out more money to buy another bed when the baby grows into a toddler.
Cribs can be found in a variety of price ranges. Economy cribs use less-expensive materials and may have cosmetic wood defects, but there are some good economy cribs on the market. The Dream on Me Madison 2 in 1 Convertible sells for about $85 to $90, and the Dream on Me Classic Convertible sells for $99. Both are JPMA certified. In the mid price range, the Delta Canton 3-in-1 Convertible runs between $180 and $245, and is certified by the JPMA and the American Society of Testing Manufacturers (ASTM). The Emily 4-in-1 Convertible is $199 online and is JPMA certified. In the high end range, the Genevieve Fixed Gate is $799.99, and meets voluntary safety standards set forth by the U.S. Product Safety Commission, the ASTM and the Canadian Cribs and Cradles Regulations. The Larkin Fixed Gate Sleigh sells online for about $1,000, and has the same safety ratings.
When shopping for a crib, it’s safest to buy new, rather than buying or accepting a used crib. The reason is that with all the consumer recalls, an older model may not meet federal safety standards or it may need repairs. Keeping it simple and sticking with the basics is the wisest way to choose.

Santoku Knife Use and History
These days, the santoku knife has become a ubiquitous kitchen tool, common in all home appliance stores and TV cooking shows. You hear a TV chef rave about the santoku knife, and you wonder if it’s an ancient Japanese knife only recently brought to the West. After all, companies that forge santoku knives in Japan describe using authentic sword-making techniques to craft the steel.
In fact, the santoku knife’s history goes back only so far, to mid-1940s, when World War II was ending. Western and Japanese cultures blended together, in a way. The Japanese had discovered new styles of cooking popular in the West, so they developed the santoku knife as their own version of the chefs knife. So the santoku knife is a sort of hybrid of Eastern and Western cultures, unlike the sashimi knife, which is a true traditional Japanese knife.
How exactly does a santoku knife differ from a basic chefs knife? The answer lies in the oval indentations along the edge of the blade. This “hollow edge” allows air pockets to form between the knife and the food it’s slicing. You’ll notice when using a santoku knife that there’s less friction and struggling to cut through dense foods. Also, food slides right off the blade instead of sticking to it—something you’ll really appreciate when it comes to cheese.
The word santoku itself means “three virtues.” What those three virtues, or uses, are, no one can quite agree. Some theories include:
- The knife is used primarily for chopping, mincing, and dicing.
- The knife has three distinct sections: the tip, the edge, and the heel.
- The knife can cut through anything: fish, meat, or vegetables.
Whichever theory you believe, you have to agree that the santoku knife is pretty unmatched when it comes to versatility.
The santoku knife has other distinct qualities that set it apart:
- Typically smaller than the traditional chefs knife, it’s a preferred tool for many women and people with smaller hands.
- Because it’s made of harder steel, the blade can be forged thinner without losing any of its cutting strength.
- The blade is also wider than that of a chefs knife, making it a useful tool for scooping and transferring food.
- It has a straighter edge than the rounded chefs knife, meaning it requires a different cutting motion. You push the tip forward slightly as you do a straight up-and-down chopping.
If you’re an aspiring chef in your kitchen at home, then you’ll appreciate a versatile knife like the santoku. Its lightweight and thin design belie its true power.

New Crib Safety Standards
Along with the tougher standards now in place for fixed side baby cribs, the law banning the sale of drop side cribs is aimed squarely at forcing any remaining illegal cribs off the marketplace.
The lergislation, HR 5386, went into effect in June 2011 making it against the law for businesses and merchants to sell drop side cribs, even at thrift stores and yard sales. It is also illegal to donate used, hand-me-down drop side cribs.
It’s not a moment too soon, said U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Chairman Inez Tenenbaum.
“After 30 years of having outdated standards, CPSC delivered on its promise and created the toughest crib safety standards in the world,” Tenenbaum said. “Parents can now shop for a crib with confidence.”
The new standards are so stringent, government officials advise that anyone who still has an older model drop side crib destroy it and buy a new one.
The older cribs were designed to make it easier to put down and pick up the baby from the crib, but a number of infants have died after slipping through side rails that were loose or broken.

What Materials Aren’t Safe for Toys?
In recent years, parents have become increasingly aware of dangerous materials found in common children’s toys, often those made overseas. We now have regulations on what materials are safe and which ones should be avoided in children’s toys and other consumer products.
BPA
BPA, or Bisphenol A, is an organic compound found in many plastics. Safety groups have determined that BPA products have detectable hormone properties and are not safe for babies or children. Some recent studies have suggested links between BPA exposure and obesity, neurological difficulties, and other health problems. When it comes to children, there’s just no sense in taking chances. Canada and the European Union have already banned the use of BPA in baby bottles and pacifiers.
Lead paint
Everyone’s heard about the scare over lead paint in toys. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recalled toys with detectable levels of lead, either in the paint or the plastic make-up of the toys. It’s not just toys from China that contain lead; those antique toys passed down from your parents and grandparents could have lead because they were made before the U.S. banned lead paint in household products. Surprisingly, children’s jewelry appears to be the greatest culprit when it comes to containing lead.
Children are exposed to lead by placing such toys in their mouths, which can lead to health risks. Always be wary of imported toys, and check safety labels on products to be sure of their makeup.
Choking hazards
It’s not just miniscule chemicals that can pose a risk to your children, but also tiny pieces that can break off of toys and be swallowed or choked on. Always pay attention to warning labels that identify a choking hazard to children under age 3. And even then, keep an eye on toddlers as they play because many still have a habit of putting toys in their mouths, which isn’t very sanitary.
Never let young children play with balloons unsupervised because they could easily choke on broken balloon pieces. Similarly, dispose of the plastic bags that toys come packaged in, as children could suffocate by putting the bags over their heads.
Other toxic materials
Safety websites such as HealthyToys.org identify toxic materials found in common toys. Be on the lookout for toys with unsafe levels of arsenic, mercury, lead, chromium, and cadmium. While a product that contains such materials may not pose a risk of direct exposure to a normal person, children are particularly vulnerable because their bodies and brains are still developing. It’s always crucial to play it safe with kids.
