Baby Crib Safety Standards

By Valerie Baldowski
Look for Baby Crib Certifications and Safety Standards

It’s been said that not all cribs are alike. Despite the homogenous nature of this product, seemingly minor differences one brand has from other brands can add up to a safer crib. An example can be a comparison between the Babyletto Harlow 3-in-1 and the Sorelle Prescott Convertible 4-in-1.

The Sorelle Prescott 4-in-1 has a four-position mattress support for the crib, to allow for readjustment of the mattress level as the child grows. Its dimensions are 54 by 33.4 by 41.4 inches. The Sorelle Prescott morphs into a transitional bed, then later into a child’s day bed, and eventually into a full size bed. For convenience, the tools required for assembly are included when the product is purchased, and there is a five-year limited warranty.

However, despite its fixed sides this crib has a recall history.

In September 2010 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall of 130 Sorelle Prescott cribs due to the dangers from entrapment, suffocation and falling. The cribs were relabeled Simplicity brand units which contained tubular metal mattress support frames, which had previously been recalled in April of that same year. The mattress support frames were prone to bending or detaching, causing part of the mattress to fall and create a space just large enough to allow an infant or toddler to roll into and become wedged in.

There were 29 incidents and one death reported. The cribs were manufactured in China, where safety standards differ from federal standards in the U.S. The manufacturer, Simplicity Inc., is no longer in business.

A safer alternative is the Babyletto Harlow 3-in-1 crib.

The Babyletto Harlow has a metal mattress support that can be adjusted to four levels, and a toddler guard rail kit to convert the crib to a toddler bed when needed. The bed is lead-free and phthalate safe and has a one-year manufacturer’s warranty. It is constructed from New Zealand Pine wood, and its dimensions are 53.5 by 30 by 34.5 inches. But most importantly, it meets all U.S. safety standards and is certified by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA).

The JPMA is a national trade organization representing 95 percent of the prenatal/preschool industry. The organization monitors the juvenile products industry and works with government officials, consumer groups and industry leaders to educate consumers and promote safe children’s products. Other groups monitoring cribs for safety include the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the CPSC.

New Baby Trend Convertible Car Seat

By
The LATCH System Makes Installing a Car Seat User Friendly

Parents shopping for child safety seats at Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us are probably just now noticing another brand of seat on the shelves.

Baby Trend, Inc. has launched its new trendz FastBack 3-in-1 car seat nationwide. The seats were scheduled to hit the stores on Jan. 9.

The two retail chains were exclusively chosen to carry the new line of car seat for its official debut onto the market, according to Bloomberg Businessweek.

The FastBack, advertised as three seats in one, is a convertible seat for children who have outgrown an infant car seat. The FastBack is designed to change as the child grows from 22 pounds to as heavy as 120 pounds. It can be used as a forward-facing seat with a built-in harness to hold up to 70 pounds, a high-back booster seat which holds up to 100 pounds, and a backless booster seat that holds children as heavy as 120 pounds.

The seat has soft plush seat covers, and includes a cup holder and a media holder. It weighs 28.25 pounds and its dimensions are 17.5 by 17.75 by 31 inches. It has a steel frame with its own patented Rigid Energy Management System (REMS) for easy installation in a vehicle. The REMS is said to be better than traditional automobile seat belt systems because it allows the child to benefit from the car’s own built-in energy management. Specifically, the FastBack was built to exceed all governmental safety standards and minimize movement of the car seat in case of a crash.

Based in Ontario, CA, Baby Trend is a manufacturer of juvenile products. In addition to car seats it also makes strollers, travel systems, nursery centers, high chairs and walkers.

Range Hood Cleaning Tips

By

An example of a filter from a range hood

While many range hoods have removable filters that are generally easy to clean—some are even safe to go in the dishwasher—you also have the top and other surfaces of the hood to keep clean. You’d be surprised how much grease builds up on top of the hood. Not only does grease keep your stainless steel from looking brilliant and polished, but it’s also a potential fire hazard.

You can effectively wash the top of a hood with warm, soapy water and a cloth. If it’s stainless steel, always rub it with the grain and dry it immediately to prevent water spots from developing.

Range hoods with a painted finish are cleaned in much the same way. While some special cleaning agents guarantee a better shine, you want to be careful using them for fear of the chemicals reacting with heat from the stove to remove the paint.

Food Processor Accessories

10 Rate

Some of the high-end food processor models come with a dizzying array of blades, slicing discs, and other accessories that promise to make your kitchen work easier. Indeed they can, provided that you know what each accessory is for and when to use it.

S-blade

The S-blade is the most basic feature of the food processor, found in virtually every model. It gets its name from the two curved blades that extend from the center. This blade is responsible for most of the chopping, slicing, grinding, and grating your food processor will perform. The best blades are stainless steel because they stay sharp and don’t break or rust.

Dough Blade

Similar to the S-blade in shape, the dough blade has straighter edges good for kneading and mixing dough for bread. The dough blade is either metal or a durable plastic.

Egg Whip

With two wide paddles, the egg whip spins around and beats or whips eggs quickly. This accessory can be useful for whipping egg whites for special sauces, creams, and dessert recipes.

Juicer

A citrus juicer is a dome-shaped top that goes on the shaft and squeezes the juice from fruits like grapefruit, lemons, or oranges. Another type of juicer strains the juice from fruits when they pass through the feed chute. It collects the pulp while leaving the juices at the bottom of the bowl.

Slicing Discs

A flat metal disc with an upraised row of fine teeth, the Julienne disc cuts food into long, thin ribbons.
A French fry disc looks much the same but its serrated edges are wider, yielding thicker slices of food.

Spatula

Some food processors come with a spatula to thoroughly scrape food mixes from the bowl.

Knife Sharpening Tools and Tips

By

Sharpening your special kitchen knives when it’s required will keep them cutting and slicing away with speed and precision. Even though many knife manufacturers boast that their knives stay sharp and rarely need honing, it’s still smart to have a couple tools at hand for when your blades inevitably start getting dull.

Remember, sharpening knives isn’t just for keeping them in peak condition; it’s also a matter of safety. A dull knife is more likely to slip and cut you than a razor-thin blade.

Whetstone

A whetstone is a great tool for sharpening knives because it doesn’t wear away too much of the blade. The task is fairly straightforward and takes only a couple minutes.

  • Position the whetstone on the cutting board, scratchy side up.
  • Hold the knife’s edge against the whetstone at a 22 ½ degree angle and slide it forward against the stone, covering all parts of the edge.
  • Repeat this movement 10 times, and then flip the knife over to do the other side 10 times.
  • Flip the whetstone over so the finer side is facing up. Repeat the previous steps.

The whetstone works away parts of the blade’s edge to get it sharp again. However, the process leaves the edge rough and uneven. After whetting the knife, you’ll need to use the knife sharpener to get the blade’s edge smooth again.

Sharpening Steel

A steel smooths, or hones, the knife’s edge to a straight line, close to the way you originally had it. The steel should be at least as long as the knife you’re sharpening.

  • With your non-dominant hand, hold the steel up with the point resting against the cutting board, your hand at the top of the steel.
  • Position the knife perpendicular to the steel, with the back of the blade (the part closest to the handle) against the steel. Once again, the knife should be angled 22 ½ degrees against the steel.
  • In one fluid motion, simultaneously pull the knife back toward you and down the length of the steel. This motion should cover the entire edge of the blade.
  • Do this stroke 10 times, and then turn the knife over and give that side 10 strokes.

After whetting and honing the knife, carefully rinse any miniscule metal filings off the blade and dry it with a cloth. These simple steps will preserve the fine quality and angle of your knife’s edge. Whatever you do, avoid rinky-dink electric sharpeners, which can seriously damage the fine craftsmanship of the blade.

As you get used to the sharpening process, you’ll notice the difference between a sharp and dull blade right away. Some chefs sharpen their knives frequently—at least once a week. You’ll appreciate your whetstone and steel when you see how smoothly your knife cuts through tomatoes, cheese, and carrots.

There are a lot of great options to choose from in the drugstore, health food store, department store, with a skin care specialist (esthetician) or a dermatologist. Other details that you might want to consider are whether you want some tinting coverage and/or an SPF in your daily moisturizer. In my experience consistency is key. If you can’t afford a high end moisturizer with a lot of fancy ingredients then opt for a less expensive one. It’s the things we do every day that really make a difference long term.

iPhone Screen Protection

By

The Otterbox Defender case with built in screen-protector

The screen is of the utmost importance on your iPhone. Because it’s a touchscreen, it’s the primary way you use the phone—dialing numbers, navigating menus, texting, and using apps. Apple has made the iPhone screen as durable as it can be, but even so, it will inevitably pick up scratches and dings with long-term use. Every time you set down the phone on a surface or put it in your pocket with keys or other items, you risk damaging the screen. And accidental drops are even worse—you can crack or shatter an iPhone screen if you drop the phone just right.

Some cases, like the Otterbox Universal Defender Case and the Case-Mate Tank Rugged Case, have built-in screen protectors to shield the screen from damage. Other cases have a slight overlap or lip on the front that raises the screen a few millimeters when you set the phone down.

If your case covers the back and sides of the iPhone but doesn’t protect the screen, then you should consider purchasing a separate shield. Invisible Shield, for instance, is a popular brand that protects all Apple products and other phones, tablets, and e-readers. Consider the benefits:

• When applied properly, the shield doesn’t bubble and it protects the phone from scratches, wear, and dirt.
• It’s based on technology used to protect military equipment from dust and debris.
• You have the option of applying the shield over all the surfaces of the phone.
• If you choose to remove the shield, it comes off easily with no residue.
• It’s backed by a lifetime warranty.

Top 5 Features to Look for in a Toaster

1. High lift carriage

No one wants to have to stick their fingers (or worse, a fork) down into the toaster slot to get that thin slice of bread out. Many toasters let you “boost” the toast up so it’s easy to grab with no burnt fingers.

2. Bagel setting

The difference with toasting bagels as opposed to toast is that you don’t want both sides browned, just the cut part. With a good bagel setting, the cut part is toasted while the other side is warmed, giving you a delicious blend of crispy and soft.

3. Cord storage

Appliances are in competition for prime countertop space. If you want to keep your toaster out all the time, then a retractable cord or a hidden cord storage is ideal for keeping your counter free of messy-looking wires.

4. Lift and Look

This isn’t an essential feature, but it sure is cool. With a lift and look button, you can quickly raise the toast to get a peek at how it’s turning out. The toast then descends and continues its business. This can prevent burning and help you get the toast at that perfect shade.

5. Front-access, removable crumb tray

Yes, toaster crumb trays get filled up pretty quickly with toast remnants. Unless you want to be lugging the toaster across your counter to reach the crumb tray in the back or to shake it out over the sink, a front-access, removable crumb tray is best for cleanup.

Parts of a Chef’s Knife

By

If you’re hunting for a top-quality chefs knife, then it’s helpful to understand the basic components of a knife and what qualities makes it durable and strong.

Forged steel is always preferable. The steel should run in one piece from the tip of the knife to the tang, or the part that’s secured within the handle. This one-piece construction will make the knife last for years without breaking or becoming disjointed.

Material

The best chefs knives are forged from high carbon stainless steel, which is an extremely strong, hard metal that resists stains and rust. Hard steel is tougher to sharpen, but it already stays sharp for long periods. Some people like the softer carbon steel material because it’s easier to sharpen, but those knives go dull faster.

Length and shape of blade

Chefs knives are typically 8 to 12 inches long. The longer the blade, the more surface area the knife can cover in a single stroke.

You’ll notice some knives described as French- or German-style. French chefs knives have a flatter, more triangular blade which is ideal for slicing foods in a pull-back motion. German knives have a rounded blade that’s good for an up-and-down rocking motion, a faster, easier movement.

There are also special Japanese knives called santoku, which feature spaced-out dimples, or indentations, along the edge of the blade. These marks in the blade allow air pockets to form between the food and the knife, cutting down on friction and sticking.

Handle

Try handling a knife to see how easily it fits in your hand. Is the handle textured or contoured to prevent slips and provide comfort? It should be long enough to hold easily and provide proper balance to the knife.

Handles used to be exclusively made of wood, but now we recognize that there are disadvantages to that material. For one, wood can warp and crack if exposed to water for long periods. Also, wood is porous, meaning bacteria from food particles can grow in the handle or at the bolster where the handle meets the blade. For sanitary purposes, plastic or rubber handles are preferred for commercial kitchens. Of course, there’s always a compromise: wood infused with plastic resin, a composite that resembles wood but doesn’t pose hygienic risks.

Weight and heft

The longer the knife, the greater leverage you’ll have while cutting hard, large food objects. The heel, or widest portion of the blade, is responsible for cutting through carrots and other hard foods. You may prefer a hefty knife with enough cutting force to handle these tasks. Just be aware that a heavier knife will tire your arm out after extended periods of use.

Tang and rivets

Full tang knives are the best. Period. The tang may or may not be visible in the handle, but you can usually see the rivets, which secure the handle to the tang. They should not protrude from the handle or include crevices where crumbs and juices can get stuck.

Forged vs. stamped

If the knife has a bolster, or thick shoulder at the top of the blade, that indicates that the knife was forged from a big piece of steel. These types of knives are strongest, and the bolster keeps your hand from slipping or getting tired.

Stamped knives, in contrast, are made from a roll of sheet metal and aren’t as sturdy or long-lasting as forged knives. They do, however, have the advantage of being lighter and more comfortable to handle for long periods of time.

Long Slot Toasters: The New Toaster Style

By

A new kitchen appliance style that seems to be gaining more and more attention is the elongated toaster. Traditionally, toasters come in paired slots (either one or two pairs), but the elongated toaster extends those slots to accommodate two slices of bread or one slice of larger artisan/homemade bread.

So what are the benefits of these elongated toasters (besides the aforementioned ability to fit artisan bread)? Well, they’re quite sleek and modern looking. Because they’re narrower, they arguably take up less counter space than their bulky traditional counterparts. Some designs, like the Hamilton Beach Perfect Toast 2 Slice Toaster, even have the controls on the long side, allowing you to set the toaster against the wall and save space. The Cuisinart CPT-2000 even throws in a motorized carriage to complete the futuristic toaster look and feel.

As much as people like what’s familiar, elongated toasters may soon be gaining in popularity and competing for that coveted spot on your kitchen counter.
