GE GFSF6KKY vs. Electrolux EI23BC36I: Comparing Two French Door, Bottom Freezer Refrigerators
Both the GE GFSF6KKY and the Electrolux EI23BC36I are refrigerators in the popular modern style with French doors and the freezer on the bottom. This arrangement makes it easy to see and grab the foods you use most without having to lean over. By comparing the two models, we can see a couple noticeable differences that may sway you toward one or the other.
The GE refrigerator has a great 25.9 cu. ft. capacity. We feel that the 8.17 cu. ft. freezer doesn’t detract too much space from the fridge, but you may feel differently when you open the French doors. The fridge compartment is quite wide, and the four slide-out glass shelves and six adjustable door bins give you some flexibility. This GE fridge has a width-long deli tray compartment at the bottom of the fridge, built to hold large trays or sheet cakes. Some people like this compartment, but others feel that it’s too limited in its usefulness and takes up precious space for taller food items.
The Electrolux refrigerator is counter depth, meaning it has slightly less capacity (22.6 cu. ft.), but it also fits better in kitchens with limited space. The four glass shelves are adjustable, but they don’t slide out, which may make reaching foods in the back difficult. It also has just five adjustable door bins. While you’re losing a couple cubic feet of space, you still have enough flexibility to arrange the shelves to your preferences.
Another big difference between the two fridges is the external ice dispenser on the GE model. These ice dispensers have their proponents and detractors. Yes, it’s easier to fill up glasses with water or ice without having to open the door, which lets out cool air and makes the fridge work harder to bring the temperature back down. But if you have children around, then you know they like to play with it, which can get messy. And some people prefer a clean, blank exterior on their fridge. It’s simply a matter of preference. The Electrolux model has that smooth, unbroken exterior, but some consumers complained that the ice maker bucket occasionally overflows, which could be a design flaw.
Surprisingly, the refrigerator with the smaller capacity costs more: $2,399. The larger GE fridge costs $1,776.72. Take into consideration, also, that the GE model has a year energy use of 552 kWh/yr. The Electrolux model is more energy efficient, operating at 467.2 kWh/yr, so you’ll save a bit on energy costs over the course of a year.
So is one fridge hands-down better than the other? The GE refrigerator wins when it comes to price and capacity. If you’re buying a fridge for a large family, you’ll love the extra spacious interior. However, the Electrolux is more energy efficient, and if you prefer a blank exterior, you’ll be happier with the Electrolux over the GE model.

Connecting with International Friends through travel social networking sites
If you’re young, footloose, and fancy free, you can still stay connected with friends and family back home through online social networking sites designed specifically for travelers. More and more travel agent sides are implementing social networking tools that allow users to connect with one another to share photos, stories, tips, and reviews. One of the major benefits is obvious: We prefer to hear honest, personalized travel advice from real people, even friends, and not just companies trying to sell us stuff.
Wayn.com is one of the biggest social networking sites for travelers. Members create a profile and share where they’ve traveled and where they plan to go. They connect with others who share their interests, hobbies, and dream destinations. It implements many of the features common on other social networking sites like Facebook: chatting, forums, photos, and amassing friends. Users who become friends through the website can even agree to meet in the same city.
Other sites combine social networking with travel booking information. Tripadvisor.com, for instance, is one of the biggest travel sites in the world, allowing people to read reviews and blogs from real-life travelers and share photos. Tripadvisor also connects with with your Facebook account, letting you see where your friends have been, where they are now, and which locations they “liked.” IgoUgo.com has a similar system; it rewards contributors who submit photos, blogs, and reviews with Go points that they can redeem for online gift certifications or frequent flier miles. Members gain fans who follow their blogs.
As more travel sites recognize the benefits of letting travelers connect with one another, whether for professional or personal purposes, the more they’ll integrate social networking into their websites. And we’ll be happy to read honest, personal accounts from people who have been there—especially people we know.

Tips for Booking Inexpensive Flights Online
Whether you’re flying for business or pleasure, there are techniques you can use to get the best deals on flights online.
Start looking early, but not too early.
It helps if you know your travel times at least 3 weeks in advance; you’re unlikely to find a good deal if you wait until the week of your flight. Budget travel sites may offer deals for last-minute trips, but you may be forced to leave at some crazy hour. For the best results, start looking early.
At the same time, don’t try to book a flight months in advance. Because airline prices fluctuate over time, it’s best to check back often to get an idea of the highs and lows in pricing. Some websites, such as Expedia and Orbitz, offer to keep an eye out for the best prices and deals for you.
Compare different deals.
Don’t rely on just one travel site; shop around as you would for any product you’re buying. You can either search different sites yourself or consult a search engine like Farechase, Qixo, or BestFares that compares what different travel sites offer.
Allow some flexibility.
If your trip allows it, see what turns up if you alter the arrival and departure dates. If you’re willing to take a flight at any time of the day, discount sites like Hotwire and Priceline offer interesting deals. Priceline even lets you name your price—but be aware that if the airline accepts your bid, your card is charged automatically and only then do you find out what airline and flight time you purchased.

Booking Trips on a Budget: Comparing Priceline and Hotwire
Everyone enjoys a vacation every now and then; the challenge is finding good deals on flights, hotels, and ground transportation. Many online travel site let you search for fair prices and make arrangements from the comfort of your home.
Priceline.com and Hotwire.com are two sites in particular that offer savings and special deals on flights and accommodations. They can offer such low prices because they’re partnered with airlines, hotels, and car rental places, helping them fill empty rooms and seats that would otherwise go unsold.
With Priceline, you place bids on what you think a flight or hotel room is worth. Bidding can take a while—if you turn down an offer, you must wait 24 hours before placing your next bid—but you can find some great deals if you’re patient.
Hotwire doesn’t involve bidding; you select a hotel room based on the price and the description of the amenities offered, but you don’t find out the exact hotel name until after you’ve made your payment. Prices are a little higher than Priceline’s, but you have to remember that you’re booking rooms right away without worrying about bidding.
Whichever option you choose, it’s advised to call the hotel after booking a room to confirm your arrangements. You can specify how many beds you need and whether it’s smoking or non-smoking. Also, consult other travel sites like Tripadvisor.com to read some feedback from travelers so you know what you’re getting in advance.
Budget travel sites are a convenient option if you really need to travel on the cheap. They’re designed to help you throw together a last-minute trip with reasonable prices. You just have to remember to be flexible; often the flights they offer are at unusual times—early in the morning or late at night.

How to Choose the Right Golf Club
By S. Dee Davis
Confidence, feel, contact, consistency, spin control – our iron game can pretty much be summed up by those words. If we make good contact, distance takes care of itself as high quality steel on cast urethane produces the crushing blow that launches the ball. The heavy blade makes a punishing descending blow and produces a launching ball flight. But what set to buy? How do you know which iron type is right for you? Here are a few pointers. Assuming you have some general ideal about what your handicap is the following may help (if you do not know it’s probably a 25 to 30). For obvious reasons, we do not get into recommendations for scratch golfers.
Value
High Handicap
First off, if you are a beginner or very high handicap golfer you are in luck when it comes to prices for technology in today’s offerings. If you’re handicap is above a 20 you need not spend too much on a set of clubs. You will still get exceptional technological advancements in the set from what you could have purchased for the same money 20 years ago.
Mid Handicap
If you are a mid handicap golfer like the majority of golfers out there, look for a good quality steel shaft and cavity back head from a top brand name manufacture. There’s lots of competition for your money so also look at last years model when choosing.
Low Handicap
If you are a low handicap golfer you’re probably looking at a higher priced set of clubs with a forged high quality steel head and a heavier top quality steel shaft. It will be difficult to get into some lower price points here but shopping the best brands can save you a couple hundred dollars. You’re probably going to spend over $800 though no matter what.
Iron Shaft Options
Low Handicap
A top quality heavy steel shaft in stiff to extra stiff should be your shaft at this level giving you maximum constistency
Mid Handicap
A good quality steel shaft of regular to stiff shaft flex should be a good option for you here giving you some increased distance and pretty good control and consistency
High Handicap Senior or Low Club Head Speed
If you are a high handicap senior with a low club head speed you may want to consider a graphite shaft which is a little more forgiving and will help you generate a little more club head speed.
High Handicap with High Club Head Speed
This golfer needs a good quality steel shaft in stiff flex if available to give a little more consistency since he/she has plenty of power. It may be tricky but it’s out there.
Iron Club Head Design Choices
Low Handicap
The low handicapper will likely look for blades but should also consider modified progressive head designed iron sets with the longer irons having more cavity and slight offset and the shorter irons being more of a blade.
Mid Handicap
The mid-handicap golfer has tons of options here depending on ball striking ability. If you are a clean ball striker you might also consider the progressive iron set mentioned above for lower handicap golfers. If your swing speed is a bit slower (106 or lower) you might use the progressive set with a regular shaft option. Otherwise, other good options include the many forgiving cavity backed slightly offset heads. I recommend you not go to a maximum offset head design unless you’re a senior if you want to improve your game. A slight offset should be good enough. Club head weighting should be slightly more concentrated toward the sole of the club head.
High Handicap
High handicappers should look for an iron with maximum sweet spot, a cavity backed design, and a medium to maximum offset. We recommend no more than a medium offset if you want to improve your game. The weighting of the club head should be concentrated in the sole of the club to help you stay down, and to give the ball immediate launch. Iron club heads for this category of player have improved drastically over the past 10 years so a new set can have an impact on your game immediately.

Buy the Right Golf Ball to Lower Your Golf Handicap
By S. Dee Davis
Matching your swing speed to the golf ball may be one way to increase distance and lower your handicap. Almost all golf balls are made by their respective manufacturers to target golfers of certain ability levels. One of the best ways to know your ability level is swing speed and it is measurable which makes it a possible practical technique.
Many golf balls these days contain a rating for various optimum swing speed ranges. Look for it on the packaging or the manufacturer web site to find out. It’s easy to find your average swing speed. Most high end golf stores have speed reading meters on their simulated driving ranges. It only takes a few minutes to find out how fast you are swinging the club and then match your swing speed to a ball that optimizes its flight for your swing speed. Always keep in mind however how comfortable the ball feels around the greens as well, as most golfers use far more strokes there than from tee to green.

Point and Shoot Camera Buying Guide
There are many features on digital cameras that some may find necessary while others may wish for something else. Also, the hardware on digital cameras, like sensors and lenses, is very important, so be sure to know what you are looking for and what you are getting.
Megapixels
Don’t be lured into a purchase by the number of megapixels alone. Yes, the higher the better, but it may not be what you are looking for. Large (higher than 12) megapixel measurements produce very large images that are pretty much only good for printing poster size prints or heavy cropping. If most of your pictures find their way onto the internet or social networks, a modest (12 or less) megapixel rating will suit you just fine. If hard drive space and memory card space are concerns, stick to lower numbers.
Sensor Type
The two types of sensors we find in digital cameras are CMOS and CCD. These are simply two different ways to capture visual information digitally. Each has its pros and cons, but quality is not lost on either side. The CMOS sensors are on higher end models and perform at better speeds. The CCD sensors are cheaper, very good at gathering light, and reducing noise.
Lens
The lenses on these cameras are not interchangeable like on larger DSLR’s, but they are pretty much all around useful. If you are looking for a camera you will use indoors a lot, wide angle lenses are the way to go. These would be the 24 to 28mm lenses. Most of these cameras are equipped with pretty powerful zoom features, so a wide lens will easily work in outdoor situations as well. Lens speed is the other thing to look for. These are given in f numbers (ex. f/2.5-f/4.8) usually listed on the lens somewhere. The lower numbers perform better in low light or action shots. Look for this if you are concerned about what kinds of light you will be shooting in most.
Optical Zoom vs. Digital Zoom
These are very important to take into consideration when looking at a purchase. Optical zoom is the zoom the actual glass is capable of in the camera. This type of zoom will not distort or reduce the quality of the image at all. Digital Zoom steps in at the end of optical zoom to digitally make the image larger than the lens is capable of. This results in a loss of quality, but it can be very powerful.
Shooting Modes
Cameras are usually equipped with many shooting modes to get optimal picture quality in a given scene. Having an array of selections can take the guesswork out of taking pictures on a snowy day or at an evening get together. Using these settings the camera adjusts itself accordingly (ex. sets flash, slows shutter speed, opens aperture) to make the best picture possible. If you are new to photography, these modes can be a lifesaver.

Tips for Wine Glass Care
Regular wine glasses are designed to stand up to a lot of use. Typically possessing thick glass, they’re easy to throw in the dishwasher with all your other dishware.
If you have some fine wine glasses, however, then you want to protect them and keep them looking their brilliant best. Special cleaning and maintenance tips will help your glassware stay clear and prevent them from damage.
- Avoid direct sunlight and exposure to extreme temperatures.
- Do not use hard or metal utensils to stir the drinks.
- Don’t place glassware in the microwave or freezer. Wash in the dishwasher only if the glasses are designated as dishwasher safe.
- For long-term storage, use bubble wrap or soft cloth rather than paper.
- Always use non-abrasive cleaners. To get rid of a stain on the glass, clean it with a lemon half or vinegar. Distilled water, rather than hard water, is better at preventing stains.
Generally, fine glasses are not meant to be put in the dishwasher. It’s best to hand wash them, and not only because they’re fragile. A dishwasher can erode the fine luster, or brilliance, of the glass. Use a non-abrasive cleaner and warm water to clean the glassware, and dry them with a lint-free cloth.

Resistive and Capacitive Touchscreens: Understanding the Difference
By JB Burden
Most of our gadgets today feature touchscreens. We’ve long hand touchscreens on ATMs, supermarket check-out lines, and other public places. But you’ve probably noticed that the touchscreen on your smartphone or tablet works differently than the touchscreen at the bank drive-thru. Why is that?
The difference lies in the type of touchscreen, either resistive or capacitive.
- Resistive touchscreens sense pressure, from a finger press or a stylus. The surface of the resistive touchscreen flexes under pressure, and the machine detects where the pressure is coming from—that is, which part of the screen you’re touching.
- Capacitive touchscreens don’t rely on pressure, and for that reason they require just the lightest touch. Their electrodes respond to only certain objects, like fingertips. Because you don’t have to use great pressure on a capacitive screen, you can use light swipes and taps to operate the touchscreen.
Resistive touchscreens have the advantage of being slightly more accurate, and you can use objects besides just your finger to get them to work. Capacitive touchscreens require a specific kind of stylus to increase the sensitivity of the screen, and such a stylus can be more accurate than your finger.

HDE AD-GCPD22-7C vs. Arkon IPM-TAB1: Comparing Two Tablet Stands
By JB Burden
The 7-inch tablet stand and carrying case from HDE and the Arkon portable fold-up tablet stand are two popular options for viewing the iPad or other tablet in an upright position. The HDE stand also functions as a protective carrying case and comes with a USB keyboard to make typing easier. The Arkon stand doesn’t include a keyboard, but it works with a variety of tablets whether they’re encased or not.
One advantage of the Arkon stand is that it quickly folds up into a compact form that fits in a bag, purse, or pocket. The non-slip base keeps the tablet from sliding on slick surfaces. If you already have a case or sleeve for your tablet, then the Arkon fold-up stand is a convenient addition—unless, of course, your case already folds into a stand. The Arkon stand costs $12.45.
The HDE case includes an extendable stand and USB keyboard, all for $11.40—making it a very valuable purchase if you don’t already own a case. The case fits tablets up to 8.75 x 5.5 x 0.75 inches. While the keyboard makes it much easier to work on the tablet, some users have complained that the keyboard was incompatible with their tablet, even with the adapter. It could be user error, or there could be a defect with their particular purchase.
To sum up: The HDE case gives you more for your dollar, but some people have found it difficult getting the keyboard to work. The Arkon stand is a simple but incredibly useful accessory to carry around with you, and it works whether or not your tablet has a case.

Cosmos vs. Bluecell Stylus Pens
By JB Burden
Styluses come in handy whether you’re using a tablet, smartphone, e-reader, or other device with a touchscreen. Some people even carry around their styluses to use on public ATMs or kiosks. A good stylus works on capacitive and resistive screens. Cosmos and Bluecell are two manufacturers that offer inexpensive styluses for smartphones and tablets in a variety of bright colors. These styluses are not the highest quality compared to more expensive stylus pens from Boxware, Griffin, and Pogo. However, they still serve their purpose well, are lightweight and colorful, and clip to a pocket or book.
Cosmos offers a three-piece set for $6.99; the included styluses are aqua, red, and black and include the Cosmos brand name. The colors are attractive and unisex, and the soft tips work on capacitive touchscreens without leaving marks. The only potential issue comes from the tips, which may tear over time. A torn or rough stylus tip could scratch or mark a touchscreen.
Bluecell offers four styluses for $5.99—a better value. There are two pink and two purple pens—the colors are cute but may not appeal to men. The stylus pens can help women with long fingernails tap their capacitive touchscreens with better accuracy.
Overall, these pen sets from Bluecell and Cosmos serve the same purpose. The Cosmos pens have a wider appeal for both men and women, but the the Bluecell styluses come at a better value. We wish both kinds included a headphone jack input that attaches the stylus to a tablet so it doesn’t get lost.

Smartphones with AMOLED Screens
By JB Burden
Today you’ll see a high demand for AMOLED screens on smartphones, digital cameras, and other devices that play media. AMOLED, which stands for active-matrix organic light-emitting diode, is a display system that uses considerably less power than other technologies. With portable devices that already suck up a lot of energy, display technology like AMOLED helps a great deal with extending the battery life.
Some AMOLED screens are difficult to view in direct sunlight because they don’t have a maximum brightness as great as traditional LCD screens. Samsung is one manufacturer in particular working to enhance the AMOLED technology, and it has helped improve visibility by decreasing the space between the layers of the screen.
Some smartphones that include an AMOLED display include:
- HTC Droid Incredible
- Galaxy Nexus
- Motorola Droid Razr
- Nokia N9
- Samsung Galaxy S II

HTC Rezound vs. iPhone 4S
By JB Burden
The HTC Rezound for Verizon Wireless and the iPhone 4S for Sprint are both popular smartphones ranked highly by consumers. So how do they compare to each other in terms of design and features?
The HTC Rezound is certainly bigger. Its 4.3-inch display is incredibly sharp with 720p resolution. The tradeoff, of course, is that the phone is rather bulky and heavy at 5.1 inches long and 6.1 ounces. The iPhone 4S also features a sharp display, with 960 x 640 pixels. However, the screen is considerably smaller at 3.5 inches. Those lost fractions of an inch can make a difference if you plan to watch videos and view pictures on the phone. The iPhone 4S is smaller and easier to carry, measuring 4.5 inches long and weighing 4.9 ounces.
Both the HTC Rezound and the iPhone 4S have cameras with 8 MP and video recording. The former also has a 2 MP front-facing camera that allows you to participate in video chats. However, we noticed that the Rezound’s camera speed can be a little slow. The iPhone 4S’s camera lets you shoot videos clips in 1080p HD and edit photos through the phone. The picture quality is quite sharp and clear, even in low light.
Each phone also has its major selling point. For the HTC Rezound, it’s the Beats Audio technology that vastly improves the sound quality of your music and works in conjunction with the Beats earbuds included with the set. The iPhone 4S features Siri, a female-voiced personal assistant who vocally answers your questions and demands.
You always want to get as many talking minutes as possible out of your phone per charge. In this case, the iPhone 4S comes out ahead, offering 14 talking hours under 2G conditions. The HTC Rezound allows 6.75 talking hours. With both phones, however, you’ll have to stay near your charger as they both drain down the battery every day with regular use.
Additionally, the HTC Rezound is a 4G phone, a quality that the iPhone 4S sorely lacks. The Rezound’s 4G capabilities allow you to surf the web with incredible speed. Once you’ve experienced the lightning-fast qualities of 4G, it will be hard to go back to a slower speed.
Price, of course, always matters, and in this case the HTC Rezound is better for your wallet at $199, compared to the iPhone 4S, which is $399. Siri is a pretty cool feature, and incredibly convenient too. But considering that the Rezound has a larger screen, a rear- and front-facing camera, excellent picture and sound quality, 4G connectivity, and lower price, we think it edges out the iPhone 4S.

Comparing Two Over-the-Range Microwaves: The GE PVM1790SRSS vs. the Bosch HMV30
Two over-the-range microwaves in our top 10 list, the GE PVM1790SRSS and the Bosch HMV30, are in the $300 price range, which is the higher end as far as microwaves go. Let’s see how these two models compare as far as features and offerings go.
Price is a good place to start. The GE model runs at $399, but it offers convection cooking, while the Bosch model, at $338, does not. The $60 difference is not tremendous, but convection ovens are increasingly in high demand because of their ability to crisp, brown, and bake foods faster than standard microwave ovens.
Capacity-wise, the GE model edges out the Bosch one again, but only by a tenth of a cubic foot. The two microwaves have an equal 1,000 watts, a powerful strength. Their turntables are roughly the same in diameter, also.
As far as features go, each model has its own perks. The Bosch microwave has a convenient popcorn feature: By entering the size of the bag, the microwave adjusts the cook settings so you get the most popped kernels and less burning. It also has quick cook settings in 1-, 2-, and 3-minute increments.
Convection cooking is the GE model’s best feature, operating at 1,550 watts. While it takes time to preheat, the model’s at a remarkably low price for a convection oven. Another beneficial quality is the fast bake setting, which cooks dishes up to 25 percent faster than comparable models.
Both the GE and the Bosch models are attractively designed, with glossy doors, wide windows, and easy-to-clean interiors. It all boils down to whether you want convection cooking with your microwave. If that’s one of your must-haves, then the GE PVM1790SRSS is obviously the winner. However, the Bosch HMV30 still offers in-demand features for a reasonable price.

Microwave Safety Tips
Microwave ovens have become such an essential modern convenience that roughly 90 percent of homes have them. However, many people still do not recognize or understand the most basic safety tips, the dos and don’ts of microwave use. Following these tips will improve your microwaving performance and prevent common mishaps and safety problems.
Monitor Children
Young children should never use a microwave unsupervised. They can easily enter in the wrong cook time—10 minutes instead of one, for instance—and cause a big, smoky mess or a fire. If your microwave model doesn’t include a child lock, teach your children how to use it properly and make sure they understand the risks.
Covering Food
When you reheat a container of food, leave a corner uncovered to release steam. Otherwise the food can turn out burnt and charred.
Popcorn
Stay nearby when you’re popping popcorn to prevent burning or a fire. Follow the instructions on the bag and listen for when it’s ready: when the pops come two to three seconds apart.
Food Containers
Always check to see if a plastic container is intended for microwave use. Cleaning up melted plastic is no fun, and the food will be wasted, too.
Aluminum Foil
A big rule: Don’t use aluminum foil in the microwave—unless you want to see a mini-fireworks show. Unlike plastic, glass, and ceramic, foil deflects the radio waves, which means your food won’t heat properly, and, worse, you could damage the microwave.
Snack Foods
Before putting a hot dog, raw egg yolk, or baked potato in the microwave, puncture the skin with a fork or knife to prevent messy explosions.
Filters
Over-the-range microwaves require you to clean or replace the filter on a regular basis. If you keep up with this maintenance, your microwave will run properly and last longer.
Grime Control
Periodically clear out the grime in your microwave by letting water boil in an appropriate container and create steam along the microwave walls. After a few minutes, wipe down the walls to get rid of built-up grease, which can seriously hamper the appliance’s performance and pose a fire hazard.
Cooking Times
Read cooking instructions carefully to know how long to heat the food and whether it should be covered. Also consider your microwave’s wattage; a microwave with high wattage takes less time to heat food.
These dos and don’ts of microwave safety may seem common sense to some. But if you’re new to an appliance or cooking in general, it’s always best to review the proper procedures.
