How to Light a Gas Range in a Power Outage

10 RateAn added bonus gas ranges have over their electric counterparts is that you can still light them when the power has gone out in your home. This trick works if your gas range uses natural gas and an electronic ignition. If you aren’t sure which type of ignition your stove uses, see if the burner makes a clicking noise when you turn the knob. If it does, then you’re good to go.

Steps to light the burner manually:

  • Remove the grate over the burner.
  • Turn the dial to “ignite” or “light” to start the gas flow.
  • Light a match and hold the tip about a half-inch from the burner to ignite the gas.
  • Once the burner is lit, replace the grate and cook as you normally would.
  • Turn the dial off when you have finished.

With this simple procedure, you can still use your gas range even when all the other appliances in your home are out. Just be sure to douse the match thoroughly with water before disposing of it.
