Toys for Children Ages 2-4 Buying Guide

Picking Toys that Help 2- to 4-Year-Old Children Learn and Develop Skills

Toddlerhood is a fun, important stage for your kids. Not only are they walking and talking, but they’re learning new things every day, imitating everything they see, exploring, and developing unique personalities.

Kids of all ages love toys, and toddlers aged two to four are no exception. Not only should toys for tots be safe and entertaining, but they should help kids develop new skills, such as:

• Fine motor skills, like being able to pick up, stack, and balance blocks;
• Dexterity in the hands and fingers;
• Hand-eye coordination as they throw and catch balls;
• Creative play and imagination;
• Recognizing colors, shapes, letters, and numbers;
• Imitating real life as they play make-believe and mimic adult actions;
• Problem solving as they work out puzzles.

There are currently so many toys on the market that it can be overwhelming for parents to know what to buy. Also, you run the risk of overwhelming your kids with too many toys that only get a couple hours of playtime before being forgotten. However, there are some sure-fire toy categories that almost certainly grab and hold toddlers’ attention and allow them to learn as they play.

Toys for the outdoors

As you know, little kids love to run around, and they have seemingly endless energy. Outdoor toys let them work off some of that energy and help them learn balance, coordination, and sports skills. Look for balls they can roll, bounce, and toss. Sports sets made specifically for toddlers will foster a love for popular games like T-ball, soccer, golf, and basketball.

Board games

Toddlers can pick up the basic rules of simple games like Candyland and Chutes and Ladders. With a little parental help, they’ll learn to love working out puzzles, identifying and matching shapes and colors, and taking turns with siblings. Games also help young children’s brain development.

Imitating real-life and make-believe

Toddlers are always observing the world around them, imitating adult actions and behaviors (with mixed reactions from their parents). Many toys let kids pretend to be grown-ups, such as playhouses, kitchen sets, miniature cars, tools, and musical instruments. Not only do your kids love acting like miniature versions of mom or dad, they also develop their imaginations. Creative play makes toddlers ready for learning about the real world when they enter school.

Building and creating toys

Stackable blocks have remained an age-old classic toy for the simple reason that kids love to create and destroy their own towers. Playing with blocks, be they simple wooden pieces or interlocking LEGO blocks, helps toddlers develop dexterity in their fingers, fine motor skills, balance, and hand-eye coordination. Plus, when they knock their cities over, it’s no big deal—they can simply start all over again.

Similarly, artistic toys help children grow creatively. Toddlers love to color, paint, and play with clay, and many new art sets are easy for parents to clean up afterward.

Reading

Toddlers aged two to four have a firmer grasp on language and love being read to. At this age, they’re ready for longer, more engaging storybooks. You can share classic books from your own childhood, such as Goodnight Moon, Where the Wild Things Are, and Dr. Seuss stories. Children will learn to identify the basic components of the story, such as characters and plot, and they’ll begin to understand the lessons imparted from classic fables and fairy tales. Illustrations also help spark their imaginations.

Mid-Value LED TV Buying Guide

Factors to Consider when Purchasing an LED TV (at least a mid-range one)

Resolution

Since almost all mid-range LED Televisions are 1080p resolution this is not really much of a factor any more.

Picture Quality Features to Pass On

In a Mid-Priced LED TV you want good but not over the top picture quality features. You save significant money by not having to have the fanciest most current features. Today those include 960Hz enhanced refresh rate, full array local dimming backlighting rather than edge lit LED, and true 240Hz panels.

Some Picture Quality Features You Want to Keep For Sure

1) Clear Coat Screens
For me, clear coat screens are important. We have in our list here a few TVs that do have a matte screen finish, but we prefer clear coat (otherwise called ultra clear) screen LCD panels due to better light flow in the screen and brightness. Contrast and side angle viewing may also be much better depending on the screen.

2) Video Processing
Processing is important no matter what price level you are choosing from, so we recommend strong processing engines from good manufacturers. This makes a huge difference with 480i or 480p standard definition signals up-converting to the native resolution (1080p) of the panel.

3) 120Hz vs. 240Hz Native Panel
To my eyes 120Hz panel refresh rate speed is probably good enough. Both 120Hz and 240Hz have issues when it comes to some negative unintended consequences. Both are good for fast action programming such as sports. But it’s much more difficult to see the difference between 120Hz to 240hz than the larger step up which is 60Hz to 120Hz. You will see much more judder – jerky motion effects with at 60Hz screen – so we recommend 120Hz for this price category LED TVs.

Other LED TV Features to Take a Pass On (in the Mid-Range Price Category)
Some people could give a hoot about 3D capability and that is why we have included TVs in this list that are not 3D compatible. If 3D is included – active or passive is fine for this category unless you are a 3D connoisseur – in which case you probably want active shutter 3D quality. Super fancy remote controls with QWERTY keyboards or touch pads are nice to have but not extremely necessary. 4K resolution is out of reach in this price range and may not help you that much anyway right now with such limited programming. The highest end appearance packages with the thinnest depths add too much cost and are not included in this categories recommendations (with the exception of the LGs).

Features to Not Take a Pass On

In my mind, the way Internet TV (also called Smart TV) options are expanding you might want that feature more than 3D for now. Built in Wifi is a nice feature to have to access the Internet – not having to purchase a Wifi Dongle or hard wire for the Internet. A full web browser is sometimes reserved for higher end TVs, but it’s a feature I like a lot because you can access and watch programming directly off the Web without having to use only the available Internet TV Apps built in.

Sound Quality

Though much overlooked – sound quality is mucho important if you do not plan on using a home theater system.

This should be easy and simple to use. Two clicks should put you on the picture settings controls or wherever you want to be. It should also be intuitive to use without having to look at the manual.

Consistent Long Lasting Performance
This is another often overlooked category with some of the lesser 2nd and 3rd tier brands. The price might seem right until a year down the road when the TV stops working due to a power supply problem or video board issue.

Parts Availability/ Warranty
The top tier manufacturers stand by their products better and they are easier to have repaired. They also come with a 1 year warranty as opposed to the 90 day warranty some of the lesser brands have. All the TVs in this list have a 1 year warranty. For a good solid TV warranty extension see dtvexpress.com.

Price and Features
When it comes to price, you have to know the features you can live without. Is 3D important – you will pay more. Is a high Hz rate important – you will pay more. Smart TV, same situation. Great HD picture, same. Know what features you really do want and what you can live without if you want to save money.

HDTV Buying Guide

How to Choose the Best Quality HDTV

The list of HDTVs we have compiled here is specifically top quality regardless of price. So keep that in mind for this list and check out our other HDTV lists if you are looking for value or price considerations as well. This list is for those that want the very best of what is out there.

What to look for to get the (Very) Best Quality HDTV

1) Black Levels and Contrast Ratio
Black levels and Contrast are widely considered the most important picture quality elements, however the number of gray scales in between must also be considered. Contrast specifications from the manufacturers can be misleading because they list “dynamic” contrast figures, which are basically worthless manipulated contrast numbers. Native contrast is what you want and to go even further, a D6500K calibrated contrast ratio would be the best figure to go by – but good luck getting it. You can however determine how deep black levels are by checking the blacks on the screen next to the thin black inner glass strip that surrounds the screen using the standard picture setting.

2) Room Light Considerations
Think about the room light in which you will be watching the HDTV most of the time. If there is lots of sunlight streaming in through windows then you will want an HDTV with lots of powerful lighting ability – think LED and think local dimming LED to be more specific. Those strong LED lights shining through the panel will help neutralize the in-room light and still make the picture pop. If the in-room lighting is low light or controlled light conditions, you have the best viewing conditions and can think of many options. Plasma HDTVs are still considered the best by many for their smoother more film-like picture quality in this situation.

3) Sound Quality
Most large expensive TVs these days are accompanied in the household by a home theater surround system. However, if you will be using the speakers that are built in the HDTV do not overlook this important consideration. Many manufacturers take for granted sound quality and do not emphasize quality enough so it’s important to check it out.

4) Processing Quality and Speed
Plasma HDTVs have generally never had a problem with processing speed but some LED and LCD HDTVs do and it causes some lag time in fast moving images. This is one reason the LED HDTVs in this list focus on this aspect of the TV. Processing quality refers to the video chip engine used in the HDTV to present the smoothest images possible free of annoying motion artifacts. A very good HDTV video engine will eliminate all kinds of viewing artifacts that will show up on lesser HDTVs picture.

Choosing a Lawn Trimmer

Gas vs. Electric Lawn Trimmers

As with many other tools, one of the major considerations you’ll face as you select a lawn trimmer is whether to go gas or electric. Each option has its pros and cons, so you’ll have to think about your personal needs and preferences.

Power
Gas lawn trimmers are typically more powerful than electric ones, so keep that in mind if you have a large yard or rough, thick terrain. On the other hand, electric weed eaters are usually quieter and more lightweight.

Cords and Batteries
Gas lawn trimmers are cordless, giving you a wide range of movement. Electric lawn trimmers come in corded or cordless varieties. If you choose corded, make sure you have easy access to an outdoor power outlet. If you choose cordless, research how long a battery charge will last you—you’ll want to be able to finish your yard without having to stop and recharge the lawn trimmer.

Maintenance
Generally, electric lawn trimmers are easier to maintain than gas lawn trimmers. Many gas weed eaters, particularly those with a 2-cycle engine, require you to mix gas and oil together for fuel. However, you can select a lawn trimmer with a 4-cycle engine, which doesn’t require that gas-oil mixture.

In short, if you have a smaller yard, or you trim less frequently, then an electric lawn trimmer may be the better, more economical choice. If you require a more powerful machine to cut through tough brush or heavy grass, you’ll likely prefer a gas lawn trimmer for its extra oomph.

Shop Vacuum Buying Guide

Buyer’s Guide to Wet/Dry Vacs

As you shop for a wet/dry vacuum, the most important consideration you must look for is cleaning performance. You obviously want a Shop Vac that cleans up dust, debris, and puddles quickly, thoroughly, and efficiently. Here are some other factors to consider.

Size
Generally, the bigger the wet/dry vac, the more powerful the cleaning performance. Also, they have greater fluid capacity. If you plan to use this Shop Vac extensively for big cleaning tasks, then you’ll want a big model. However, if you have limited house space or need a vac for simple, everyday spills and cleaning, then a smaller model will work just as satisfactorily.

Noise
Many wet/dry vacuums, due to their incredible motors, are very loud. You’ll want to wear ear protectors if the vacuum runs at 85 decibels or higher. The Fein 9-20-25 Turbo-II notably runs at only 60 decibels, making it gentler on the ears.

Accessories
Shop Vacs almost always come with a hose, which should be long and flexible for maneuverability. Stiff hoses can make a vacuum tip over if it doesn’t have a stable base. Many Shop Vacs also come with a variety of attachments, such as a crevice tool for cleaning tight spaces in your car, a utility nozzle for large debris, and a brush for carpet. Extension wands can be a lifesaver if you don’t want to crouch or stand on tiptoes to reach areas. If a wet/dry vacuum comes with such tools, see whether it offers onboard storage or some other means of storing these attachments.

Hose Diameter
If the vacuum hose is wide in diameter (say, 2 ½ inches), it can more easily pick up large, bulky debris. Narrower hoses tend to have more clogging issues and take longer to clean.

Dust Bag
Even a standard dust bag can prolong the life of the filter and hold all sorts of heavy debris. The dust bag, which usually costs no more than $8, fits around the filter, improves the suction, and makes it easier to switch between the wet and dry functions.

Pressure Washer Buying Guide

So you want to buy a pressure washer to keep your patio, vehicle, walkways, or house siding looking new and sparkling clean. The next step is choosing a pressure washer that’s right for you and your specific needs. Let’s look at some specific points you should consider.

Gas or Electric

Most people will tell you that gas-powered pressure washers are better for heavy duty cleaning tasks. They have a great deal more power than electric models. They also use much more water, up to 2 or 3 GPM. If you don’t feel like maintaining a gas model, or if you prefer a less expensive, quieter pressure washer, then an electric-powered model might be the better choice. Just be aware that it’s better suited for lighter tasks.

PSI and GPM

You know that by multiplying the PSI (pounds per square inch) and the GPM (gallons per minute), you get the CU (the cleaning unit), or cleaning power of the pressure washer. Here’s a breakdown of the different grades of pressure washers, and which kind you should seek out depending on your needs.

PSI GPM Tasks
Consumer Grade Electric Models 1,300–1,800 Max 1.5 Light, occasional jobs

  • washing car
  • spot cleaning
  • shutters, lawn chairs, etc.
  • Consumer Grade Gas Models 2,000–3,000 Max 2.5 Heavy, frequent jobs

  • cleaning decks/sidewalks
  • house siding (stains)
  • Profession Grade Gas Models 3,000 + Max 4 Professional, hard, frequent jobs

  • tough stains
  • industrial jobs
  • paint stripping

    GPS Device Buying Guide

A Portable GPS Navigator Buying Guide

As you shop for a GPS device to mount in your car, consider the following factors that can have an impact on your device’s effectiveness.

    Screen size

There are GPS screens ranging from 2.5 to 7 inches. While the small screens can be difficult to see at a glance while you’re driving and cumbersome to type on, the large screens can block your view of the road when mounted on the windshield. Look for a GPS device with a screen around 4.5 to 5 inches as a good compromise. The 5-inch screens are especially easy to take in at a glance, especially if you’re driving a truck, RV, or other large vehicle.

    Dynamic search

Typing on a touchpad screen can be cumbersome, especially if the screen isn’t very responsive. Some GPS devices include dynamic search options that predict the possible locations based on the letters you’ve typed in. If you see the correct destination, you can save yourself the trouble of typing it all in just by pressing it.

    Lane assistance

As you approach complicated junctions, the lane assistance feature on your GPS navigator will help you figure out exactly which lane you need to be in to make your exit or turn.

    Bluetooth

In a further effort to keep your hands on the wheel, many GPS navigators include Bluetooth connectivity, allowing you to make and receive calls through the loudspeaker without using your hands. You must have a phone that supports Bluetooth for this to work.

    Mounting units

A GPS device can be attached either to the windshield or the dashboard with a suction cup mount. Look for mounts that hold the GPS navigator steady without vibrating. Also be aware that some states like Minnesota and California have restrictions on mounting any device to the windshield.

    Charging options

Your GPS device can always be powered by the car adapter, but many also have an internal power supply that lasts a couple hours per charge. With an internal power supply, you can carry the GPS device along with you on bike rides or to navigate subway and bus stops. Often you can charge the GPS device through the USB cord plugged into the computer.

    Street names

An ideal GPS navigator speaks the names of the streets you turn on so you don’t have to keep glancing at the screen for the directions. While this is a very helpful feature, be aware that some models are better at vocalizing text than others. When a GPS device can’t pronounce simple street names, it kind of defeats the purpose.

    Traffic updates

Most high-end GPS devices offer real-time traffic updates, alerting you to accidents and traffic jams and rerouting you to a less congested path. Sometimes this traffic service is limited to major roads. Sometimes the traffic information comes through a subscription, and other times it’s free—but you’ll have to put up with pop-up ad banners.

    Other special alerts and features

Advanced GPS navigators have advanced routing options, such as avoiding toll roads. Some GPS devices alert you to streets with speed cameras or intersections with red light cameras so you can advance with caution. The more versatile and flexible your GPS navigator, the more options you have on the road.

    Stoneware Buying Guide

The Benefits of Cooking with Stoneware

Stoneware dishes made of fire clay harken back to the (very) old days before people started using metal pans for baking foods. Today, stoneware is experiencing a resurgence in popularity, due in part to its durability and effectiveness at heating food.

With proper care, stoneware dishes last for years and can be passed down to your children. Today’s pieces especially are built to last, with tough enamel finishes that don’t chip, crack, or break easily. Stoneware can put up with a light amount of abuse. They’re generally safe to go in the oven, microwave, freezer, and refrigerator. You can even wash them in the dishwasher.

    Tough and nonporous…

Unlike earthenware, stoneware is clay fired at extremely high temperatures, about 2,185 degrees F, making them incredibly strong. Stoneware dishes also feature nonporous surfaces, which is good because they don’t stain or absorb odors and flavors. Also, unlike earthenware, stoneware is essentially waterproof. It can stand up to regular, day-to-day use.

    A seasoned, non-stick surface…

Some stoneware dishes come pre-seasoned with oil, but even if they don’t you can season them yourself periodically. Over time and multiple uses, the stoneware interior will turn a rich brown and the surface will absorb the oils and fats found in food and cooking spray. Your stoneware will naturally develop a non-stick surface, so you don’t have to worry about stuck-on foods.

If you choose to clean by hand…

If a stoneware dish isn’t specified as dishwasher friendly, you can easily clean it by hand with a nylon scraper. Some people don’t recommend soaking them in water or using soap for fear of the detergent being absorbed into the surface. A scraper can work off baked-on food before you clean it with running water and thoroughly dry it with a towel.

While most stoneware dishes sold these days are dishwasher safe, some people are set in their ways and prefer to clean them by hand. There is something to say for preserving the enamel finish.

    The aesthetic appeal…

Let’s not forget that stoneware is essentially pottery. You can find pieces in decorative shapes and colors, some with painted patterns that add charm and beauty to your kitchen. Because they’re so attractive, you can take stoneware dishes right out of the oven and place them right on the dinner table.
