Along with the tougher standards now in place for fixed side baby cribs, the law banning the sale of drop side cribs is aimed squarely at forcing any remaining illegal cribs off the marketplace.

The lergislation, HR 5386, went into effect in June 2011 making it against the law for businesses and merchants to sell drop side cribs, even at thrift stores and yard sales. It is also illegal to donate used, hand-me-down drop side cribs.

It’s not a moment too soon, said U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Chairman Inez Tenenbaum.

“After 30 years of having outdated standards, CPSC delivered on its promise and created the toughest crib safety standards in the world,” Tenenbaum said. “Parents can now shop for a crib with confidence.”

The new standards are so stringent, government officials advise that anyone who still has an older model drop side crib destroy it and buy a new one.

The older cribs were designed to make it easier to put down and pick up the baby from the crib, but a number of infants have died after slipping through side rails that were loose or broken.
