Lean Cuisine DietThough not really a diet I have always found it easy to lose weight by eating pre-packaged meals with limited calories. It prevents cheating. Lean Cuisine has been around for a long time. It’s an old classic, but still it can be effective for dieting – especially for those that are used to eating a large lunch. It’s all about portion control and therefore calorie control. It’s about keeping up with calories which is not too fun. 1200 calories would be a limit for some females. The pre-packaged frozen food from Lean Cuisine helps keep count and obviously cuts way down on preparation and cook time. You may be surprised how little food a meal is once you start heating or steaming these babies. Anyway, it works. I’ve done it. It’s just an intake limitation device. I was surprised to see that Lean Cuisine does not list all the nutritional information of it’s various offerings on its web site. Weak.

The Gluten Free DietThough not really a weight loss diet some people may find that they have gluten intolerances without even knowing it. If a person is intolerant to gluten they will likely experience bloating as the body retains fluids to help fight off the allergic reaction. Many people also have celiac disease without knowing it, which is partly characterized by an intolerance and allergic reaction to gluten based foods. When people that have a gluten intolerance stop eating foods with gluten they often experience weight loss (sometimes a lot) and other stomach symptoms like bloating, gas, and irritation also dissipate. Gluten is a protein found in foods processed from wheat, barley and rye. That’s right – bread, as much as we all love it is off the menu. And yes, bread extends to pizza dough. And beer is certainly taboo. I tried the gluten free diet for 3 weeks and had two things to report, 1) it was easy for me to stay gluten free – meaning not very painful. 2) I did not lose any or much weight which likely means that I’m not gluten intolerant. A good friend however lost 12 pounds in two weeks with stunning results and felt much better as well, thus discovering that they were gluten intolerant. So what do you eat when you cant eat gluten? Rice, hemp bread, there is even gluten free pasta and gluten free beer out there, candy, all manner of fruits and vegetables.

Mayo Clinic DietThough complex and difficult to comprehend at times this is basically a good diet put forth by one of the most respected health clinics in America. It is officially developed by the clinic through research and experience. The diet is broken down into two phases: “Lose it!” which is the first couple of weeks in which it jump starts your weight loss and, “Live it!” in which you start your lifestyle routines and taking away bad habits and gaining good ones. It also involves daily exercise for 30 minutes. The first couple weeks takes off 6 to 10 pounds, the weeks following are 1 to 2 pounds.

Nutrisystem DietAs with most mass market, the claims on this diet are about how to take the weight off gradually and keep it off – except they have Janet Jackson as their spokesperson. The food centers on Low Glycemic index foods that are of course – slow carbs. Other components of the diet are that it is balanced with low fat, high fiber foods – same as many of the other effective diets in this list. Another component is the introduction of whey protein for shakes. I love whey protein shakes. They help you feel full, have loads of protein and are great if you are on strenuous exercise routine (especially weights). There is an assisting exercise program if you want. One of the big differentiators of this diet is that you order all the food from Nutrisystem – 28 days worth.

The South Beach Diet	The South Beach diet may be known for its protein intake as a key component but it also calls for plenty of fiber through fruits and vegetables. High fiber and lean protein foods are the most nutritious and send satiation signals to the brain according to Dr. Aurther Agatston – author of the book and diet. The Juice Fast DietThis diet is similar to the Lemonade fast in many respects except that you can stay on it for as long as you like. The formula is simple, buy a good juicer and start juicing your meals from kale, lettuce, spinach, apples, pears, carrots and the like. You can juice almost any fruit or vegetable but we recommend not using banana or grapes which are very high in sugar. The detoxing effects of this diet are similar to the lemonade fast in that you feel pretty lousy for the first couple of days then get tons of good energy from day 4 on. You obviously have more energy but lose weight slower on this diet than on the lemonade fast. This diet was recently sensationalized by Joe Cross in his documentary Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead in which he documents his progression and weight loss on the diet. One of the reasons this diet and the lemonade fast work so well is that they allow the body to heal itself mainly by giving the body enough nutrition but in a very easily digestible form (juice). It’s important to keep up regular activity to burn calories as digesting the juice does not burn as many calories as the solid food would otherwise.

Lemonade Fast Master Cleanse DietThis diet developed in 1940 by Stanley Borroughs works and not only does it work it gives you tons of great health benefits. I’ve done it several times and so has my brother and father. The original master cleanse document is quite long, around 35 pages (now a book) but it is also very educational because it tells you why the diet works and answers some very mysterious questions like, “How will I keep going to the bathroom (#2) if all I’m doing is drinking this lemonade concoction?” It’s a great question and the answer is not only interesting but miraculously you do keep going every day. Your body expels toxins that have been built up in your organs, turns them into solids in your intestines and out they go. It’s amazing. The recommended routine is 10 days but I know people who have done as few as 4. At the end of the 10 day period when your tongue is clear, velvet smooth and a rich red color you do one flush with a very large container full of sea salt water to completely clean those intestines. The salt water rushes right through your body and out the other end in just 20 minutes or so. Another benefit, your skin heals nicely during this diet. Losing lots of weight is almost a side benefit. Take a look at Beyonce Knowles skin in the before and after shots if you dont believe me. Let me tell you one thing about this diet, it’s not easy. You will feel like absolute crap during the 2nd and 3rd day as your body releases built up toxins. You will dream about food and find yourself gravitating to the food network to watch reruns of Emeril and other cooking shows you never would have watched before. It might become your favorite channel.

4 Hour Body Slow Carb DietTimothy Ferris, author of this book (which is very entertaining) created this diet. It is not your normal low carbohydrate, high protein diet. Yes, it is still high in protein but specific types. It avoids not only all “white” carbohydrates but any carbohydrate that could by white and obviously sugar. It avoids all fruits as well which are high in fructose and converted easily to glycerol phosphate in the body. Proteins are definitely an important part but he goes on to state specifics like eating protein first thing in the morning within 30 minutes of waking is important. Beans play a very large part in the protein sourcing in this book especially black beans, pinto beans, red beans, soybeans, and lentils – all great in protein and fiber.

One of the great things about this diet is that you get one day off a week to eat anything you want. Yes, anything. He recommends Saturdays and going crazy eating pizza or whatever it is you have been craving. I did this diet for several weeks one time and it works. Another positive trait is that you can stay on the diet until you lose the amount of weight you want to lose or for good.

His recipes and recommendations for meals are tasty

It can be inexpensive by buying frozen vegetables

Chipotle bowl (without rice) fits nicely into diet as does Mexican food
