20V Electric Cordless String Trimmer 8.5/10

By

Dewalt DCST920P1 Weed Eater
If you have a 0.25 acre lot or smaller, and you want a durable electric string trimmer with no fuss, no muss, than the Dewalt DCST920P1 is just right. Its design is simple but efficient, with a variable speed trigger that goes between high and low, maximizing power or runtime. We liked the simplicity of the bump feed that requires just a tap on the ground to advance the line while the trimmer is running. Another advantage is the easy maintenance; the only thing we saw that this trimmer needed was keeping the line cutter sharpened and keeping the extra line in a moist bag to preserve it. For long-term storage, the battery has to be kept in a temperature-controlled environment so as not to wear it out. We would have preferred the stronger 0.095″ line for its extra strength, but this trimmer still works as advertised and handles small to mid-size lots well.

Quick Specs

  • $199
  • 13-inch cutting path
  • Dual 0.080″ line
Strengths

Brushless motor enhances efficiency and durability

Variable speed trigger and speed control switch

Bump feed head cuts a 13-inch swath

Lightweight at 8.5 pounds and padded ergonomic handle for comfort of use

Easy assembly takes just a couple minutes

Weaknesses

Line is consumed quickly on tough weeds, not as durable as 0.095″ line

Best suited for light jobs, smaller yards

25.4cc Gas String Trimmer 8.8/10

By

Toro 51978 Weed Eater
For those who swear by the incredible power and durability of gas trimmers, the Toro 51978 definitely won’t disappoint. This model, with its 2-cycle 25.4cc engine, makes mincemeat of weeds and brush in short order. Additionally, the straight shaft allows users to reach around obstacles like porches and fences. We saw no issues with the 0.095″ dual line, which seems to be made to deal with abuse and not wear out quickly. If there are any issues with this model, it’s that at 12.5 pounds, it’s heavier than some other models and wears out your arm over long periods of use. Also, the debris guard is on the flimsier side and doesn’t keep debris from shooting all over the place, so be prepared with heavy-duty clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty.

Quick Specs

  • $179
  • Straight shaft
  • 2 cycles
  • 25.4cc
  • 12.5 pounds
Strengths

Accepts Ryobi Expand-It and universal gas attachments

The straight shaft provides extended reach, including around obstacles

Durable 0.095″ dual line in bump feed head

Starts within a couple pulls and accelerates quickly

Power outperforms most battery-operated models

Weaknesses

Flying debris makes for a mess on your clothes; debris guard not very sturdy

Not designed for lefties

Heavier than some more expensive models, adding to fatigue

40V Cordless Trimmer 8.8/10

By

Ryobi RY40220 Weed Eater
The Ryobi RY40220 is a cordless weed eater that, like the Black & Decker LST136W, avoids the hassle of maintaining a gas trimmer and still provides great cutting power in a lightweight body. We were impressed with the strength of the 0.080″ dual line, which handles even the toughest weeds, brush, and grass fairly easily. Another plus that we noticed quickly was the noise—or lack thereof. If you’re the kind who likes to do yardwork early in the morning before the heat of the day, then you can do so guilt-free knowing that you won’t disturb the neighbors. We would have liked to see more thought put into the ergonomics of this model; having length adjustment would prevent users from having to lift the trimmer and putting stress on their arms. However, the long runtime and the ability to switch between different attachments will make tending the lawn much more convenient.

Quick Specs

  • $149
  • 40V battery
  • 13 inches
  • Cordless
  • 13–15 inch cutting width
  • 3-year warranty
Strengths

0.080″ dual line handles tough weeds, thick grass, and brush easily

Cuts out the hassle of maintaining gas-powered trimmer

Allows users to connect attachments like blower, edger, and trimmer

Low noise production is easy on the ears

Cutting power comparable to most gas weed eaters

Runtime around 45 minutes, which is enough for most average-size lawns

Weaknesses

Not the most ergonomic: length adjustment would have been convenient to prevent soreness after using it

Switching to edger mode takes more steps than a comparable Black & Decker model

Trimmer guard doesn’t catch all the grass that shoots out

56V Cordless Trimmer 9.0/10

By

EGO ST1501-S Weed Eater
We were pleasantly surprised by many of the EGO Power+ 56V string trimmer’s features, which include a fast-charging battery that provides up to an hour of powerful, efficient trimming. As soon as we held it, we were pleased with the lightweight, well-balanced design of this model, as we could tell that it would take a lot of the hassle out of yardwork. Indeed, the 0.095″ line can handle a lot of tough jobs, and we saw no problems with the bump feed head as the trimmer ran at maximum speed. Another convenient feature is the variable speed, because it allows you to work most efficiently, for instance, switching from a low setting for trimming grass to a high setting for the tough weeds. A possible downside to the incredible power, however, is that debris flies in all directions, making it essential for users to wear long sleeves and pants, closed-toe shoes, and protective goggles.

Quick Specs

  • $179
  • 56V battery
  • 15 inches
  • Cordless
  • Bump feed head
  • 5-year limited warranty
Strengths

Variable speed lets users adjust for different jobs

Weighted nicely for comfort and ease of use

Charge runs for about an hour on lowest power setting

Charging takes less than 40 minutes

Takes down tough weeds and brush easily

Weaknesses

Handle grip can be uncomfortable for taller users

40V Cordless Trimmer 9.3/10

By

BLACK+DECKER LST136W Weed Eater
If you’ve had enough of maintaining a gas-powered weed eater and are looking for something user friendly, the Black and Decker LST136W is a great cordless, battery-powered edger that doesn’t sacrifice on power. Its 40V lithium battery charges in under an hour and will last at least an hour on a low to medium power level. We liked having the option to turn the dial between maximum power and maximum runtime. On maximum power, the weed eater lasts about 15 minutes but can handle tougher brush. For regular lawn trimming and taking care of weeds, the lower power setting is more than adequate. On the negative side, the trimmer line can dry out and become brittle, and its thin diameter of 0.065 inches puts it at risk of breaking should it hit solid surfaces like the pavement. Overall, however, this weed eater’s precision, convenience, and power make it a solid purchase.

Quick Specs

  • 40V battery
  • 13 inches
  • Cordless
  • 2-year warranty
Strengths

Long runtime due to 40V battery makes weed eater perfectly suited for big yards

Convenient dial lets users choose between maximum power or longer runtime

Easily adjusts for height and converts between edger and trimmer

Handles lawn grasses and weeds effortlessly

Lightweight and user friendly for just about anybody to handle

Not bulky or heavy, so it allows for more precision trimming around small trees

Low maintenance and charges quickly

Weaknesses

Lacks the oomph to cut through tough brush without some effort

58V Brushless Cordless String Trimmer 9.5/10

By

ECHO CST-58V4AH Weed Eater
Another cordless string trimmer ideally suited for small to mid-size yards, the ECHO CST-58V4AH runs efficiently by letting you switch between the high and low power setting. We found that the bump feed head worked great at reloading the line, which is quite durable as a 0.095 and 0.080 inch twist line. Another convenient feature was the fairly long battery runtime, which can easily top an hour if used on the lower power setting. One thing we would have liked to see addressed is the balance; the trimmer feels heavier in the back than in the front, giving it a slightly awkward feel over long periods. However, the fact that this trimmer takes out the hassle of storing and mixing gas and complicated maintenance makes this a worthy purchase.

Quick Specs

  • 4 Ah battery
  • $229
  • 14 – 16 inch cutting swath
  • 5-year consumer warranty
Strengths

Speed switches between high and low

Easy line reload through bump feed head

Comes with 0.095 and 0.080 inch twist line

Allows users to trim in low setting most of the time

String is very easy to change out

Typically runs 60 to 80 minutes on a full charge

Weaknesses

Best suited for small yards

Feels unbalanced and a little cumbersome

35cc Straight Shaft Gas Trimmer 9.7/10

By

Honda HHT35SLTAT Weed Eater
For a behemoth gas trimmer that’s definitely a step up from the standard 25cc trimmer, the Honda HHT35SLTAT demonstrates its incredible power from the moment it starts up. Although it’s on the heavy side, this model has a shoulder strap and is designed to not vibrate so much, so it’s not exhausting to use for long periods of time. One of the advertised perks of this model is the fact that it doesn’t make you mix gas and oil but takes regular gas, which certainly takes a lot of the hassle out of operating a gas trimmer. Another nice feature is the collection of blades and add-ons to increase the utility of this trimmer. If we have complaints, it’s that it takes more than one or two pulls to start up, and its fuel efficiency is not as great as 25cc models. Still, we can’t fault the design or the quality of this Honda trimmer.

Quick Specs

  • $359
  • 35cc 4-stroke engine
  • 17-inch cutting path
  • Bump line system
  • 2-year warranty
Strengths

Quieter than most other gas trimmers

Reasonably easy to maintain

Includes shoulder strap to make up for weight

Low level of vibrations makes for more comfortable use

Awesome power and dependable, durable build

Uses regular gas, taking out need to mix gas and oil

Comes with a variety of blades and accessories to add functionality

Weaknesses

Can take 3 to 4 pulls to start

Customers report that the bump head wears out and would be better replaced

Expensive

Full gas tank lasts 1 – 1.5 hours, which may not cover large yards in one go

Lawn trimmers are invaluable tools for keeping your yard looking tidy and professional. Trimmers can reach tight areas that lawn mowers can’t, such as beneath bushes and around trees. 3. If gas-powered, gas efficiency
4. Ease of start-up
5. Weight and maneuverability

Choosing a Lawn Trimmer

Gas vs. Electric Lawn Trimmers

As with many other tools, one of the major considerations you’ll face as you select a lawn trimmer is whether to go gas or electric. Each option has its pros and cons, so you’ll have to think about your personal needs and preferences.

Power
Gas lawn trimmers are typically more powerful than electric ones, so keep that in mind if you have a large yard or rough, thick terrain. On the other hand, electric weed eaters are usually quieter and more lightweight.

Cords and Batteries
Gas lawn trimmers are cordless, giving you a wide range of movement. Electric lawn trimmers come in corded or cordless varieties. If you choose corded, make sure you have easy access to an outdoor power outlet. If you choose cordless, research how long a battery charge will last you—you’ll want to be able to finish your yard without having to stop and recharge the lawn trimmer.

Maintenance
Generally, electric lawn trimmers are easier to maintain than gas lawn trimmers. Many gas weed eaters, particularly those with a 2-cycle engine, require you to mix gas and oil together for fuel. However, you can select a lawn trimmer with a 4-cycle engine, which doesn’t require that gas-oil mixture.

In short, if you have a smaller yard, or you trim less frequently, then an electric lawn trimmer may be the better, more economical choice. If you require a more powerful machine to cut through tough brush or heavy grass, you’ll likely prefer a gas lawn trimmer for its extra oomph.

How to Use a Lawn Edger
Lawn edgers are designed for getting a sharp edge along the borders of sidewalks and walkways. They cut vertically (along an edge), unlike lawn trimmers, or string trimmers, which are suited for trimming hard-to-reach areas such as under bushes and around trees. However, many current models combine trimmer and edger functions, allowing you to switch easily from one to the other for various landscaping needs.

In order to get a crisp edge along walkways, hold the lawn edger so that the blade falls between the grass and the sidewalk. Work slowly and in a straight line to achieve a neat, uniform look.

Safety
Safety precautions are important. Always wear long pants, socks, and sturdy shoes when you work. While you should avoid edging near rocks and other hard objects, eye goggles can give you the protection from any flying debris. Gloves are also ideal if the edger’s vibrations give you blisters or tire your hands.

Frequency
Luckily, edging only needs to be performed once or twice a season. Any more than that, and you may end up with weaker, stiffer grass. Following the recommended guidelines for edging will help you achieve the professional-looking lawn you desire.

Black & Decker ST1000 Weed Eater
If you have a small yard or if you need a lawn trimmer only for occasional light work, then the Black & Decker ST1000 is an affordable option at just $19.97. Electric Edger  8/10

By

Black & Decker LE750 Edge Hog Edger
The Black & Decker LE750 Edge Hog electric landscape edger is ideal for people with small yards, or who don’t require frequent landscaping. That’s not to say this edger isn’t up to the task: for a lightweight electric model, it packs a great deal of power (4,700 RPM) that can handle tough weeds and brush. One feature we found particularly helpful was the guide that lets you get crisp, straight lines on flowerbed and sidewalk edges. The edger is fairly priced at $83.49.

Quick Specs

  • 11 amp
  • 150 in./lbs. of torque
  • 12.4 lbs.
Strengths

Blade adjusts to 3 depths

Trenches around borders

Cord retention system prevents accidental unplugging

Starts with trigger pull

Enough power for tough overgrowth

Works quietly

Weaknesses

Scanty directions included

Somewhat pricey

Gas Powered Weed Eater  8/10

By

Poulan Pro PP125 Weed Eater
A lightweight string trimmer that accommodates multiple attachments, the Poulan Pro PP125 has an easy-start 2-cycle gas engine. The thick line cuts through most tough weeds, and it’s fairly easy to replace the spools due to the slots that hold the line steady while it’s changed out. Another thoughtful feature is the cover over the engine that protects your skin from burns or excessive heat. This gas trimmer is efficient when it comes to gas usage, and its 17-inch cutting width ensures quick work of your yard.

  • Dual exit cutting line
