Electric Grill  8/10

By

Cuisinart CEG 980 Electric Grill
The Cuisinart CEG-980 is quite a contender in the electric grill category. One of its best qualities is how lightweight it is, making it a perfect travel grill. At only 16 pounds, it’s easy to be on the go after folding in the legs and grabbing the briefcase handle. The CEG-980 doesn’t win any awards then it comes to cooking space though. It seems small in comparison to some of the other electric grills on the list, but it will be fine for a day at the park or a small dinner. It’s a perfect alternative when electricity is the only available method for using a grill. It seems pricey at around $160, but the tough build quality and portability make it a good choice.

Quick Specs

  • 1500 Watts
  • 145 square inches of cooking space
  • 22 x 11.8 x 17.6 inches
  • 16 pounds
Strengths

Perfect for those who live in an apartment or condo with grilling restrictions

Heats up to hot temperatures fairly quickly

No problems with hot or cool spots

The grate is removable, making it easy to clean

Cast iron grill grate is great for searing meats

Its lightweight makes it perfect for traveling

Weaknesses

Hard to clean under the grate

The cord is pretty short

On expensive end of the spectrum

Electric grills are a great alternative to grills that are in constant need of a fuel source. They are also perfect for those living in apartments or condos that don’t allow open flames on patios and balconies. The most important aspect of an electric grill, however, is its cooking performance: food should come hot off the grill juicy and flavorful with a nicely seared exterior. Other factors that we considered as we compiled this top 10 list:

1. Quality construction with materials like cast iron
2. Easy-to-clean grates
3. Precise temperature control with a handy gauge
4. Generous cooking area
5. A removable drip tray
6. Even heat distribution
7. Heat-resistant handles

Grills Buying Guide

The Benefits of Charcoal Grilling

Regular gas and electric grills are perfectly adequate at searing meats, vegetables, fish, and fruit. However, for the mouth-watering, tender, smoky barbecue taste that you typically get from a smoker at a barbecue restaurant, you can also use a charcoal grill.

The trick to charcoal grilling is cooking foods for a long period at low temperatures. By building a fire at one end of the grill and maintaining control of the airflow, you can effectively slow cook ribs, chicken, or pork for an authentic, smoky barbecue taste.

Charcoal grills have a couple advantages over regular gas grills:

  • With fewer moving parts, charcoal grills have a longer lifespan.
  • They usually cost less than gas grills. Of course, the fuel you buy to heat them can even out the costs in the long run.

A gas grill can be a more convenient choice because it starts up and cooks faster, but for a rich taste and tender consistency, a charcoal grill is a valuable cooking tool.

Electric Grill  8/10

Char-Broil Patio Bistro Electric Grill
Heat is the most sought after element of grilling. It can be tough to find an electric grill that really has some heat to it. This Char-Broil grill out performs a lot of others when it comes to this. The secret is leaving it alone for long enough without opening the lid. Anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes will get this grill up to and beyond 500 degrees. The amount of cooking space is somewhat limited, so it is better suited for smaller families. The infared heating works to create a more even cook without drying out food. This also gets rid of hot spots and flare ups. It’s relatively small and has wheels, so hiding it away shouldn’t be a problem for most. The Patio Bistro is an all around strong grill that can be found for $169.99 to around $200.

Quick Specs

  • 320 square inches of cooking space
  • 1750 watts
  • Infared cooking
  • 24.4 x 25.2 x 38.2 inches
Strengths

It gets really hot if you let it sit for a while (500+ degrees)

Great for smaller spaces and patios

It comes in a variety of colors to match any patio decor

Resonably priced

Weaknesses

Tough to assemble

Heating takes a while, be sure not to open the lid or large amounts of heat will escape

Tips for Cleaning a Grill
After cooking out and enjoying crispy steaks, burgers, or kebabs, usually the last thing you feel like doing is cleaning the grill. However, to continue getting the best tasting food and most efficient grilling, it’s critical to maintain your grill on a regular basis. Neglecting the task just makes it more difficult to clean baked-on grease and food residue.

Luckily, once you get the steps down, it’s a fairly straightforward process.

  • Take out the grates and leave them to soak in warm, soapy water.
  • With a charcoal grill, sweep out the insides after removing the grate. With a gas grill, take out the briquettes or flame shield so you can see the burner.
  • With warm, soapy water, clean around the burner, being careful not to knock it out of place. Brush out all the ashy residue.
  • Clean the insides of the grill with some soapy water and a wire brush.
  • Let the metal flame shield soak or brush off the briquettes or lava rocks before putting them back in the grill.
  • After soaking in warm water, the grates should be easy to brush clean.
  • Spray the inside surfaces with cooking oil in preparation for the next grilling.
  • Replace the grates and leave the hood open so the grill can air dry.

The next time you fire up the grill, give it an additional five minutes to heat up before you add any food. You don’t want any cleaning solutions to remain on the grates and affect the taste of your food.

The next most important point is the portability. The legs fold up to lock the lid and make it much easier to transport. It’s light at 15 pounds too. It’s a travel grill that is really made to travel. There are 4 air vents on the grill, so controlling the temperature and air flow is very easy. This in turn helps to provide nice and even cooking for everything placed inside. The price is just right as well at around $50, so it’s perfect for a second grill if you need one for travel.

Charcoal Grill and Smoker  9/10

By

Char-Griller 16619 Kamado Kooker Charcoal Grill and Smoker
This charcoal grill for the experimenters out there. It also functions as a smoker. This expands a grill master’s arsenal of techniques in a big way. As a grill, the build quality and cooking performance are both great. The exterior is made of metal while the interior is ceramic. This creates great insulation and heat retention. The side tables aren’t big by any means, but they provide extra workspace that comes in handy very often. A cover is included, but the side tables have to be folded for it to fit. It’s not a big problem, but the tables cannot act as a place to store things while it is not in use. This grill provides great cooking performance, but the price is a little steep at around $350.00. If you are looking for something that offers a little wiggle room when it comes to grilling styles, this may be a good choice.

Quick Specs

  • 306 inches of cooking space
  • 165 inches of warming space
  • 43.3 x 28.7 x 47.2 inches
  • 90 pounds
Strengths

Available in three different colors

This is an easy to assemble grill, there will not be hours of assembly time

The locking wheels make it easy to move around

A great alternative to the other more expensive egg grills and smokers

Functions great as a smoker

Weaknesses

Air leaks form where the ash trap is and can cause trouble controlling the temperature when it comes to smoking, but it is nothing a little sealant can’t fix

Lighting the charcoal could be easier

The thermometer tends to be off by a good bit

Propane Gas Grill  8.5/10

By

Broil King Baron 922164 Liquid Propane Gas Grill
The Broil King Baron gas grill offers a great deal in quality, with its durable construction and thoughtful design. The oven design leaves plenty of clearance for bigger items like roasts. With 40,000 BTU, it gets hot fast and stays hot because of the powerful burners. The cast iron cooking grids are special because they are reversible. One side is perfect for grill marks, while the other has grooves for catching juices and marinades. The cooking space that it has is just right for most families. We also appreciated the fold-down side shelves, which makes it easier to fit in a garage or patio with limited space. It is available for $499.99.

  • 40,000 BTU

Combination Gas/Charcoal Grill  8/10

By

Char-Griller 5050 Duo Charcoal and Propane Gas Grill
Char-Griller offers an all-in-one package with the 5050 Duo combination grill. You can use propane or charcoal, whatever you like. It also has a side burner for side items or sauces. It’s perfect for the grill master who likes to experiment with different methods but doesn’t want 3 or 4 different pieces of equipment. It’s a great idea to have all these in one, but it ends up doing everything just okay, not great. The performance of the charcoal side is not as good as a dedicated charcoal grill. It should be more air tight. The gas side works pretty well too. There is plenty of cooking area and the temperature can be controlled nicely with the three burners. Once again, this grill does a lot of things, but not all of them so great. It would be perfect for someone getting into all the different types of grilling. If can be found for anywhere from $250 and up.

Quick Specs

  • 40,800-BTU
  • 1260 square inches of cooking space
  • 3 burners
  • 48 x 21.5 x 13 inches
  • 168 pounds
Strengths

All the grilling and smoking options anyone would need

Great value for all of the cooking options this grill makes available to you

The side burner is a great help for getting charcoal lit in a charcoal chimney

Weaknesses

The warming rack moves when the lid is open – any drips get on the back of the grill and ground to make for extra mess

This is a tough grill to clean

Takes a while to put together

Portable Propane Gas Grill  7.5/10

By

Cuisinart CGG-180T Petit Portable Propane Gas Grill
Grilling away from backyard is a great way to get outdoor and enjoy the summetime with friends and family. A normal grill wouldn’t even be a candidate for picnic grilling. This Cuisinart portable grill is just what you’ll need for that. It’s even great for apartment dwellers and perfect for camping. The CGG-180T is a very small grill that has a fraction of the grilling space and heating power of some of the other entries on the list, but it has a different purpose altogether. It’s made to grill wherever you are. It only weight 13 pounds and is carried briefcase style. That makes it super easy to move. The built quality is excellent and the grilling performance is great. It can be found for around $100, so it’s not overly expensive if you want to have a second grill for traveling.

Quick Specs

  • 5,500 BTUs
  • 145 square inches of cooking space
  • 17.6 x 18.6 x 11.8 inches
  • 13 pounds
Strengths

The big lid handle is the handle for carrying

The lid lock keeps it from opening during travel

It’s light and small – perfect for bringing it where ever it needs to go (Don’t forget about tailgating)

Cleaning the grill grate is easy

Weaknesses

Paint can become discolored from the constant heat

Might be a little weak if you are grilling in windy conditions

Liquid Propane Gas Grill  9/10

By

Weber Spirit E210 46110001 Liquid Propane Gas Grill
This Webber is a mid sized gas grill aimed at saving space, but still delivering the quality that comes with the name. The fold down side tables and rolling casters are great features for someone with a small patio or back deck. The grilling space is not a spacious as some of the other grills we have reviewed, but it should be more than enough for a small family or a gathering. The cast iron grates are great for heat retention and searing meats, fish, and vegetables. The ignition system is upgraded to work better than the standard push button ignitions that usually fail or don’t work at all. It’s also a little lacking on the BTU rating, but that doesn’t mean this grill won’t get hot. It surely does. It might save on you on the gas usage too! It is a little more expensive at $399.99, but you know you are getting the top tier quality of a Weber with this one.

Quick Specs

  • 26,500 BTU
  • 360 square inches of cooking space
  • 2 burners
  • 32 x 50 x 63 inches
  • 123 pounds
Strengths

Heats quickly and stays hot

The lower BTU rating means you’ll save on gas instead of burning through it to keep a big grill heated

The propane tank cabinet offers plenty of storage space

Build quality is top notch

Easy to assemble

Weaknesses

It’s expensive for the amount of features that are offered here

There is no side burner, keep that in mind if you prepare many dishes at the same time
