There are oodles of infant cribs out on the market and the sheer number of brands and styles can boggle the mind. Many of them are fairly homogenous with similar or identical features, but close scrutiny reveals a few key differences which make some brands a better bargain than others. The decisions were based on:

1. Price of the crib
2. Construction quality
3. Safety certifications and features
4. Features like changing into a toddler bed or having wheels
5. Weight of the crib
6. Recall history
7. How well all these are used together

Baby Crib Buying Guide

So you’ve got a bun in the oven and you need a good quality crib. There are so many on the market, which one to choose? Measure what you want in a crib, how much you have to spend, and the track record of the individual model you’re considering. Then add a pinch of what others are saying about the crib, for comparison, a dash of online research and a helping of in-person store shopping. The end product can help narrow down hundreds of cribs to your favorite two or three.

How safe is it?

Safety is the number one concern. Online marketers are trying hard to sell their cribs, but beware of frilly, cute product descriptions that leave out information like Juvenile Product Manufacturers Association (JPMA) certification. Many websites plainly reveal if the crib is JPMA certified, but consumers interested in a particular product sometimes may have to dig a little to find out if it’s certified at all. Although drop side cribs are now banned, every so often a website turns up marketing cribs billed as having drop sides. When shopping in person, ask the salesperson for proof of JPMA certification.

Recalls have been issued for lots of cribs, so checking the recall list compiled by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) can shed some light on the search. Drop side cribs are no longer sold because of the high number of recalls. The CPSC has recalls on its website dating as far back as 1978. The most recent recalls listed from 2011 are all for drop side cribs. The brands include Dutailier, Yu Wei, Dream on Me, ducduc, Delta Enterprises, IKEA and The Land of Nod. Recalls of fixed-side cribs include Albee Baby, Child Craft, Simplicity, Stork Craft and SunKids brands.

How expensive is it?

There are cribs to fit every budget. Some are less than $100, mid-range cribs fall somewhere in the $100 to $250 price range, and the high end cribs run upwards of $300. Some custom-made cribs cost in the thousands, but those of us who aren’t celebrities will focus on how practical the crib is. Inexpensive, portable cribs aren’t necessarily less safe than their pricier counterparts. Much depends on how well they are constructed. Some families prefer a more lightweight, collapsible crib that’s easier to move. Others prefer a more modern style. Still others look for a crib that’s easy to assemble, convertible to a toddler or day bed as the baby grows out of infancy and long-lasting and durable to accommodate younger siblings when they come along.

How easy is it to find?

Online research yields lots of brands, but not all of them will be available when you walk into your local brick-and-mortar store. Some brands are sold at major retailers like Target, Sears, Wal-Mart, K mart, Babies R Us and Toys R Us. Others you won’t find at any store but are easy to order online. That’s fine, although you won’t get a chance to closely inspect the merchandise before you buy it. Some consumers don’t mind ordering their child’s crib online, but others prefer to shop the old-fashioned way. Some cribs can be ordered from overseas manufacturers, but details – such as safety information – can be sketchy.

What are others saying about it?

The most confusing aspect about shopping for a crib can be weighing what others are saying about it against what you want. Some consumers report a particular brand is hard to assemble, while others say just the opposite. Some will say the construction is shoddy and the finish scratches easily, while others will trumpet the praises of that brand. There may be recall information out on a certain brand, yet some parents will report it’s a wonderful crib that looks beautiful and fits their budget.

A thorough search can take weeks, or even months. Even the most popular brands can, over time, have issues. Some brands or styles that were considered safe a few years ago may have had recalls issued over the past few years. Checking your choice against the CPSC website can help clear up confusion. Remembering what’s at stake when purchasing a crib can help you stay focused.

Adjustable Crib  7.5/10

By

Union 4-in-1 Convertible Crib
This Union model crib has its good points but some drawbacks as well. The crib frame is made of New Zealand pine wood with a non-toxic finish free of lead and phthalate, and the mattress can be adjusted to four heights. One side of the crib can be removed when the child is old enough to outgrow a crib. It weighs only 39.6 pounds, far less than the heavy Child Craft Eastland Lifetime Crib. The crib’s design, compared to other, more ornately detailed cribs, is clean and refreshingly simple.

The price, $109.99, is affordable for families on a budget. This 4-in-1 crib is available in five attractive, soothing colors (which are also unisex). It feels sturdy when assembled as a crib; however, some users complain that it feels less so when one side is removed to form a daybed. Be aware also that converting it to a toddler bed and full-size bed requires separate conversion kits, which will add to the overall cost.

Quick Specs

  • 39.6 pounds
  • 53.5 x 30.5 x 33.5 inches
  • Grey, Lagoon, White, Espresso, Sunshine colors
  • Converts to daybed, toddler bed, and full-sized bed (conversion kits sold separately)
  • New Zealand pine wood with a non-toxic, lead-free finish
Strengths

JPMA certified for safety and your peace of mind

Mattress adjusts to four levels as your baby grows and learns to sit/stand up

Takes only 20-30 minutes to assemble, with clear instructions

Comes in a variety of pretty, calm, gender-neutral colors

Sturdy, solid construction

Weaknesses

Can show chips and scratches with long-term use

Doesn’t seem as sturdy with one of the sides removed

Fixed Side Crib  8/10

By

Stork Craft Tuscany Baby Crib
This sleigh style convertible crib is a wonderful addition to any nursery. It is missing the large drawer that many cribs offer at the bottom. That shouldn’t be a problem if there is another place for the baby’s diapers, wipes, clothes, toys and anything else a new mom would need to keep off the floor. Since safety is one of the biggest concerns, the sides are fixed so accidents are less likely to occur. Buying a Stork Craft will save having to buy a child bed later on, as it converts from a standard crib to a day bed, then eventually into a regular twin sized bed. To convert it into a full sized bed with a headboard and footboard, metal bed rails will need to be purchased separately.

It can be used from newborn through age 2. The crib and all its part are made of wood, and the side is fixed for additional stability. The crib can be purchased online for less than $200.

Quick Specs

  • 60.75 inches x 29.5 inches x 49 inches
Strengths

Nobody likes scratching their heads in bewilderment trying to assemble something, but the instructions are permanently attached and this crib is designed to be easy to assemble.

The fact that it converts from a crib to a child’s bed is a major money saver for parents on a budget who don’t want to have to shell out several hundred more bucks for another bed.

This crib is JPMA certified, and it meets or exceeds all U.S. and Canadian standards.

The Stork Craft Tuscany crib comes in a variety of finishes: Black, Cherry, Cognac, Natural, Oak, White, and more.

Weaknesses

The metal rails to convert the crib to a child’s bed must be purchased separately, so that’s extra money spent when the baby outgrows the crib.

The mattress is sold separately, and some parents reported difficulty in finding the right size mattress.

There is a strong chemical smell to the piece the first time they are opened, so it may be best to let the crib air out

Make up Your Own Mind when Deciding which Crib to Buy

More than one factor comes into play when deciding on what infant crib to buy when a little one is on the way. The most methodical way is to read up on reviews published by consumer groups and federal agencies monitoring the safety of cribs. But being human, many consumers make their decisions based on word of mouth recommendations and feedback – good or bad – from family and friends. This way is less objective but can often carry a lot of weight. Graco, Angel Line, Babi Italia and DaVinci cribs each received mixed reviews.

Graco has already established brand recognition with its other baby products on the market, and the Graco Sarah 4-in-in Convertible is popular with parents. Depending on the retailer, it sells for between $92.99 and $245.95.

Positive feedback on this crib from one mom in Merrimack, NH., includes the ease of assembly after it’s delivered and taken out of the box, its finish and its sturdy construction. Her constructive criticism included the difficulty involved in pulling up the crib mattress to change the fitted sheet. One parent from Minneapolis, MN, complained the crib’s mattress is so low it’s hard for short people to lean over the crib railing, reach down and pick up the infant. A mom from Salem, OR., praised Graco for pricing the entire collection, including the crib, dresser and changing table, at under $300. A consumer in Wilmington, NC., reported she shopped extensively before deciding on the Graco crib. Its pros are that it looks like a more expensive crib, it matches the other furniture in the nursery and transitioning to a toddler bed was hassle-free. Its drawback is that it’s easy to scratch the finish when assembling it.

But despite all the positive consumer reviews, the Graco Sarah has issues. April 2010 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall on Graco brand drop-side cribs due to entrapment and suffocation hazards. One of the recalled cribs was the Graco Sarah.

Consumers gave a thumbs up on the Angel Line Jenny Lind for its reasonable price, its stylish looks, its durability and safety and its ability to stand up toddler use. Its drawbacks included how hard the crib is to clean and the drop-down rail. The Jenny Lind Angel Line sells online for $150 to $200.

One mom in Longmeadow, MA., praised Angel Line’s construction and glossy finish, but acknowledged the crib, a drop-side style, was in the news for safety reasons. She was partially right. One model in the Angel Line crib collection, the Longwood Forest, was indeed involved in a recall, but not the Jenny Lind, which is a fixed side. Another consumer in Woodsfield, OH, reported the crib initially took only a few minutes to assemble. She initially liked it, but several months later had problems with it and eventually got rid of the crib. A parent in Hobe Sound, FL., complained the Angel Line Jenny Lind was difficult to assemble, the directions were confusing and a part was missing from the box after delivery.

The Babi Italia Eastside Convertible received universally positive consumer reviews for its sturdy construction and attractive finish. It retails for $427.49 to $450.

A grandmother from Eagle River, AK, reported that despite the price tag, the crib’s solid construction and quality materials made it stand out from other cribs. It was easily assembled, and has a fixed side for added safety. A consumer from Oxford, AL., noted the mattress was hard to remove from the crib, but added the snug fit between the mattress and the crib rails made it safer for the baby. The Babi Italia stood up to prolonged use and converted beautifully from crib to toddler bed back to crib, said a mom in Tucson, AZ. The parent of more than one young child, she said it was easily assembled even by one person.

The DaVinci Emily 4-in-1 Convertible received mostly positive feedback, with a few complaints mixed in. This crib sells for between $145 and $198.19.

One consumer from Hatboro, PA., reported the crib was extremely difficult to put together, and the diagrams included in the assembly directions were no help at all. Despite the trouble, the end product was well worth the effort. Another consumer from Smyrna, GA.., said the crib was fairly easy to assemble and looked great in the nursery. The price was reasonable, but the paint on the crib chipped easily. A mom in Urbana, IL., said despite hearing complaints from others about the DaVinci Emily, the crib was easy to assemble and she had no problem with chipping paint. The mattress fit tightly, the construction was sturdy and there was enough room underneath to fit a clothing storage bin.

Popular Cribs and Consumer Comments about Them

Graco Sarah 4-in-in Convertible
Easy assembly, attractive finish, sturdy construction. Mattress is hard to pull up when changing sheet, mattress is too low, paint scratches easily
Jenny Lind Angel Line
Reasonable price, durability, easy assembly. Assembly is hard, side drop-down side rail sticks, comes loose and falls off.
Babi Italia Eastside Convertible
Durable construction, high-quality materials, easy to assemble. Crib is expensive, mattress fits so tightly it is hard to remove.
DaVinci Emily 4-in-1 Convertible
Price is affordable, crib is easy to put together, mattress fits tightly, plenty of room underneath the crib. Paint chips easily, crib difficult to assemble, directions are confusing.
Stork Craft Tuscany 4-in-1 Stages
Easy assembly, sturdy construction, a good value compared to more expensive cribs. The finish on the wood smells bad, crib scratches easily, crib is too wide to fit through a standard size door.
Baby Mod Modena 3-in-1 Fixed Side
Easy to put together, stylish modern construction, quality construction. No casters on crib, doesn’t convert into a full size bed, wood finish is rough in some spots.

Look for Baby Crib Certifications and Safety Standards

It’s been said that not all cribs are alike. Despite the homogenous nature of this product, seemingly minor differences one brand has from other brands can add up to a safer crib. An example can be a comparison between the Babyletto Harlow 3-in-1 and the Sorelle Prescott Convertible 4-in-1.

The Sorelle Prescott 4-in-1 has a four-position mattress support for the crib, to allow for readjustment of the mattress level as the child grows. Its dimensions are 54 by 33.4 by 41.4 inches. The Sorelle Prescott morphs into a transitional bed, then later into a child’s day bed, and eventually into a full size bed. For convenience, the tools required for assembly are included when the product is purchased, and there is a five-year limited warranty.

However, despite its fixed sides this crib has a recall history.

In September 2010 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall of 130 Sorelle Prescott cribs due to the dangers from entrapment, suffocation and falling. The cribs were relabeled Simplicity brand units which contained tubular metal mattress support frames, which had previously been recalled in April of that same year. The mattress support frames were prone to bending or detaching, causing part of the mattress to fall and create a space just large enough to allow an infant or toddler to roll into and become wedged in.

There were 29 incidents and one death reported. The cribs were manufactured in China, where safety standards differ from federal standards in the U.S. The manufacturer, Simplicity Inc., is no longer in business.

A safer alternative is the Babyletto Harlow 3-in-1 crib.

The Babyletto Harlow has a metal mattress support that can be adjusted to four levels, and a toddler guard rail kit to convert the crib to a toddler bed when needed. The bed is lead-free and phthalate safe and has a one-year manufacturer’s warranty. It is constructed from New Zealand Pine wood, and its dimensions are 53.5 by 30 by 34.5 inches. But most importantly, it meets all U.S. safety standards and is certified by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA).

The JPMA is a national trade organization representing 95 percent of the prenatal/preschool industry. The organization monitors the juvenile products industry and works with government officials, consumer groups and industry leaders to educate consumers and promote safe children’s products. Other groups monitoring cribs for safety include the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the CPSC.

New Online Marketer of Baby Products Makes Its Debut

There is a new online contender fighting for a share of the market in the infant crib industry.

TheCribHub.com announced its presence in the competitive baby furniture arena in November 2011. The Crib Hub, an online retail business based in California’s Central Valley, sells a variety of cribs as well as other baby furniture and infant products certified by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association.

AFG Baby Furniture and Trend Lab were two of the first merchants to sign on with a line of furniture sold through the e-retailer. The CribHub.com is also attracting attention with its high placement on Google. The first week the company went live, it received a Google page rank of 5, a highly sought-after page ranking in the ecommerce sector.

Some of the cribs The Cribhub.com sell include the Allie 3 in 1 Convertible, the Kimberly 3 in 1 Convertible, the Jeanie Classic, the Daphne 2 in 1 Convertible, the Amy Mini and the Anna Toddler Bed. Other infant products include changing tables, combo dressers, organic coil mattresses, crib bedding sets and diaper bags.

Cribs Come in a Variety of Styles, Shapes and Sizes

Consumers searching for the right infant crib to buy are swamped with choices, but not all cribs are created equal. Compared to cradles, bassinets and Moses baskets, cribs are the safest alternative for babies. Cribs are regulated by the federal government, and many are certified by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA). Presently there are no uniform guidelines listed for bassinets, Moses baskets, cradles or co-sleepers. Overall, the simplest cribs are the best and safest.

Some manufacturers produce flashy, fancy round cribs to make the nursery look like a child’s dreamland, but those are expensive. The cost for a round crib can run into the thousands, and it’s a budget-busters for ordinary families. Also, compared to traditional cribs sold in stores, round cribs are harder to find. Try walking into your local Wal Mart, Target, Babies R Us or Toys R Us and trying to compare round cribs on display on the aisle. They are marketed on the internet, which is one way to compare prices and features of round cribs, but there are no federal safety standards or JPMA certifications available.

They may look nice, but other issues with round cribs are safety, convenience and affordability. Infants can become caught in fancy scrollwork and finials, and suffer injury or death. Round cribs also do not have adjustable mattress heights like traditional cribs do, and they cannot be converted into toddler or full size beds when the infant outgrows the crib. Considering the money spent on a round crib, it’s not much of a bargain. Parents who buy a round crib will need to shell out more money to buy another bed when the baby grows into a toddler.

Cribs can be found in a variety of price ranges. Economy cribs use less-expensive materials and may have cosmetic wood defects, but there are some good economy cribs on the market. The Dream on Me Madison 2 in 1 Convertible sells for about $85 to $90, and the Dream on Me Classic Convertible sells for $99. Both are JPMA certified. In the mid price range, the Delta Canton 3-in-1 Convertible runs between $180 and $245, and is certified by the JPMA and the American Society of Testing Manufacturers (ASTM). The Emily 4-in-1 Convertible is $199 online and is JPMA certified. In the high end range, the Genevieve Fixed Gate is $799.99, and meets voluntary safety standards set forth by the U.S. Product Safety Commission, the ASTM and the Canadian Cribs and Cradles Regulations. The Larkin Fixed Gate Sleigh sells online for about $1,000, and has the same safety ratings.

When shopping for a crib, it’s safest to buy new, rather than buying or accepting a used crib. The reason is that with all the consumer recalls, an older model may not meet federal safety standards or it may need repairs. Keeping it simple and sticking with the basics is the wisest way to choose.

CPSC Head Applauds the New Standards Cribs Must Now Meet

Along with the tougher standards now in place for fixed side baby cribs, the law banning the sale of drop side cribs is aimed squarely at forcing any remaining illegal cribs off the marketplace.

The lergislation, HR 5386, went into effect in June 2011 making it against the law for businesses and merchants to sell drop side cribs, even at thrift stores and yard sales. It is also illegal to donate used, hand-me-down drop side cribs.

It’s not a moment too soon, said U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Chairman Inez Tenenbaum.

“After 30 years of having outdated standards, CPSC delivered on its promise and created the toughest crib safety standards in the world,” Tenenbaum said. “Parents can now shop for a crib with confidence.”

The new standards are so stringent, government officials advise that anyone who still has an older model drop side crib destroy it and buy a new one.

The older cribs were designed to make it easier to put down and pick up the baby from the crib, but a number of infants have died after slipping through side rails that were loose or broken.

Look for Small but Important Differences in Cribs

At first glance it may appear infant cribs are a homogenous product, but look again. They may all be designed for the same task, but more differences than just the price tag are evident. Some cribs offer more bang for the buck. A comparison between the DaVinci and LA Baby brands is a good example. They’re both good quality cribs, but with slightly different features.

The DaVinci Kalani 4 in 1 Sleigh crib is priced at about $250 online. The DaVinci Kalani is certified by the Juvenile Product Manufacturers Association (JPMA) and comes with a toddler bed conversion rail. Made of pine wood, it has a mattress support that adjusts to four different levels. It can be converted to a full size bed later. The crib’s dimensions are 54.5 by 34.5 by 42 inches. But despite its size, there are no casters to easily roll or move it. It is popular with consumers who say they would recommend it to a friend, although some of the consumer complaints include some parts are unlabeled, making assembly a challenge, and a finish that scratches easily. However, we found a big drawback. In June 2010 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a recall on the DaVinci Sleigh model number 2991 for exposed hardware.

By comparison, the LA Baby Compact Folding Metal crib sells online for about $163, something families on a shoestring budget will appreciate. It may not look as glamorous as the more expensive models but it gets the job done. The LA Baby Compact has JPMA certification, and is also approved by the CPSC and the American Society for Testing and Materials. This no-frills crib model comes in basic institutional white, and has a scratch-resistant finish. There’s no need to fuss with directions on how to put it together, as it comes fully assembled and can be easily folded up and moved. Plus, it has caster wheels for easy maneuverability. It’s easily squeezed into small spaces – the dimensions are 39.25 by 24.25 by 37.5 inches. This is considered a commercial grade crib, and can be found in many hotels, motels and day care facilities.

The most important piece of information to look for is a recall history. Compared to the DaVinci crib, the LA Baby crib has no recall history listed with the CPSC. So whether you’re a business or a consumer, remember to look a little deeper than just the dollar figure when shopping for a crib.

Baby Cribs are Now Required to Meet Tougher Standards

The winds of change are sweeping over the crib industry.

Going forward, parents, caregivers, and businesses that make cribs available to the public are expected to abide by newer, more stringent federal standards regulating cribs. That means child care facilities, foster homes, retail outlets, churches, hospitals and the hotel/motel industry will need to follow the new rules.

By Dec. 28, 2012, public facilities will be required to use only compliant cribs meeting the newer safety standards.

Those five standards include strengthening the side slats, making stronger hardware, making the mattress supports more durable, halting the sale of traditional drop-side cribs and requiring more stringent testing of cribs.

The new rules went into effect in June 2011, so consumers still using older model or unsafe cribs will have time to bring themselves into compliance.

The standards apply to full size as well as smaller cribs. The new regulations are not just a ban on all drop side cribs. In the wake of so many crib recalls and crib-related injuries and deaths, they are a concerted effort by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to ensure cribs on the market are safe for children. Shoppers looking at cribs can ask the retail store or the manufacturer if the crib complies with 16 CFR 1219, which regulates full size cribs, or 16 CFR1220, which regulates smaller cribs.

Manufacturers are now required to test their cribs against the new standards and certify that they comply, and they must provide that certification to the retailer. Consumers shopping for a crib at the retail outlet can view the certificate of compliance accompanying the product, and make their decision accordingly.

Individual crib recalls are not linked to the passage of new governmental regulations, but are voluntary efforts by the manufacturers to cooperate with the CPSC and pull offending cribs off the market when they discover the product has a defect or a flaw. Recalls have been issued on drop side as well as fixed side cribs, but the older model drop side cribs do not meet the new standards.

A good practice is to check the CPSC website to see what cribs have been recalled. In
the past several years there have been many listed for various reasons. During 2011 alone there were recalls by eight major manufacturers for a variety of reasons. Those companies include Dutailier, Yu Wei, Shermag, Dream on Me, ducduc, Delta Enterprise, IKEA and The Land of Nod.

Consumers who still have a drop side crib that has not been recalled are urged to check the CPSC website for companies that have recalled their cribs and are providing immobilizers to secure the drops side. The immobilizers are approved by the CPSC, but the crib itself still will not meet federal standards. Consumers who have an older model fixed side crib are advised to check it frequently, to ensure the hardware is securely fastened and there are no loose, broken or missing parts.

When Crib Shopping, Beware of those Scary Recall Histories

Parents-to-be are swamped with details to take care of before the baby arrives, and one of the most important detail is finding just the right crib. That’s no easy task considering the numerous recalls that have been issued over the years on a number of cribs for various reasons. Proper research will help narrow down the field.

The crib Aunt Martha used to put little cousin Betty Lou to bed every night may not be safe anymore. Older cribs may need repairs, and older models might not meet more stringent federal standards. The sale of drop-side cribs has been banned outright, and not even thrift stores or consignment shops can accept them any more. The best bet is to buy new. There are some safety tips to follow when shopping for cribs.

  • One of the most obvious tips is to avoid buying any cribs with a recall history. For example, in May 2011, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall of 22,000 Dream on Me Full Size and Portable Drop Side cribs because the drop side rail hardware can break, allowing the drop side to detach from the crib. In April the CPSC announced a recall of more than 300 ducduc Fixed Side cribs because the bottom rails can separate from the sides when the mattress is in the lowest position, causing the mattress to fall.
  • The crib slats should be no farther apart than 2 3/8 of an inch. Older cribs are more likely to have slats that are too widely spaced, making it easier for a baby to get wedged in between them.
  • Make sure the paint isn’t chipped or peeling. A hand-me-down crib could have fancy finials, cutouts or scrollwork that could trap a baby or snag his clothes. Plus, it could be coated in lead paint.
  • Checking the crib for cracks and splinters, as well as screws or bolts protruding that could injure the baby, is a smart idea. Also, remove decorations, ribbons or bows that an inquisitive baby can pull off and put in her mouth.
  • If the crib has corner posts with knobs, they should be at least 16 inches above the end panels. Ensuring they are high enough will prevent the child from reaching the top and getting his pajamas caught.
  • Some even advise against the use of crib bumpers. Their argument is that babies can’t hurt themselves on the crib slats, but can suffocate nestled up against the bumpers. Plus, active infants can become entangled in the bumper ties.
  • Checking the hardware to make sure nothing is loose and there are no missing pieces is a good safety measure to ensure nothing falls or collapses. Also, make sure the fitted sheet and mattress are the proper size. There should be a snug fit between the mattress and the crib frame. The mattress should be 27 ¼ inches by 51 5/8 inches, and no more than six inches thick.
  • Also, as the baby grows the mattress will need to be adjusted. With newborns, the mattress can be at the highest setting to make it easy to reach into the crib. As the child grows and gets taller, and especially when they are able to sit up and pull themselves to a standing position on the crib rails, the mattress level should be lowered. When the baby is finally able to climb out and “escape,” it’s time to convert the crib to a toddler bed. Most full size cribs can be converted into a toddler bed, and eventually into a full size bed.

Decide What You Want in a Mattress for Your Baby's Crib

Crib basics include infant blankets and sheets, hanging mobiles, and of course a mattress that fits snugly against the side of the crib. A few crib manufacturers sell the mattress with the crib, but most are sold separately. Now parents must decide whether to purchase a traditional natural or an organic crib mattress. What’s the difference between the two?

Some marketers say organic crib mattresses are free of toxic chemicals. The working definition of organic is a crib mattress made from 100 percent organic cotton certified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The mattress can be used two ways. The firmer side is designed for cribs, and flipping it over brings up the less firm side for toddler beds. Its cover is antibacterial and water resistant, and air vents in the mattress keep it odor-free.

Parents considering an organic mattress for their baby’s crib should know that organic mattress standards are regulated by the National Association of Organic Mattress Industry (NAOMI). According to NAOMI, organic mattress manufacturers must conform to standards requiring mattresses to be 95 percent chemical-free. Those extremely sensitive to chemicals, however, could still have problems sleeping on an organic mattress.

NAOMI has a long list of standards mattresses must meet in order to be called “organic.” Some of them include:

  • It must be free of synthetic fabrics.
  • No fabrics can be treated with any chemical suspected of being toxic, even at low levels.
  • All wool must be from sheep raised according to organic standards, and any wool used must not contain any arsenic or lead.
  • Any rubber used must be free of benzene, toluene, pthalates, SBR, petroleum additives, formaldehyde and arsenic, and the lead level must be under .001 parts per million (ppm).
  • Any glue used must not have formaldehyde or phenolated compounds, and the presence of glue must be disclosed.

By comparison, “natural” mattresses are those that are made strictly from natural components, such as cotton, wool, natural silk or fleece. No materials such as polyester, vinyl cloth, acrylic cloth or memory foam can be used in a natural mattress. The foam in the mattress must be natural latex, or else the mattresses can’t be called “natural.”

Prices for organic crib mattresses run higher. Depending on the retailer or the merchant, natural mattresses sell for anywhere in the $29 to $85 price range. Organic mattresses usually go for about $80 to $259. Both types of mattresses have their pros and cons. In the end, the final decision will rest with the individual consumer about what type of crib mattress is best for their baby.

When Comparing Crib Models and Styles, Choose Safety First

Glitzy made-to-order cribs don’t necessarily equate to a safe bed for your infant. Many, if not most, high-end cribs have no consumer safety certification readily available. Childrens products manufacturers recognized for their effective marketing techniques or one-of-a-kind unique products can slip under the radar of the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association.

Heart-shaped, round, metal and designer cribs are regularly sold online for thousands of dollars, but finding information on the manufacturer or inspecting the product before buying is difficult. Many of the items marketed come with the warning that sales are final and there are no order cancellations or refunds. But as long as there is demand for such products, they will continue to be sold.

Wooden Cribs

  • The Little Miss Liberty Millennium Canopy, with a price tag of $770, is billed as the “latest and greatest version of the crib that started the revolution in the baby industry.” The tall posts accommodate a canopy, but it is low enough to fit under an eight-foot ceiling. It has a multi-positional base with safety locks.
  • The Little Miss Liberty Duetta Twin, on sale for $1,610, is a dual round crib designed for twins. It converts into individual cribs or expands if space for another baby is needed. The crib includes canopy kits as well as multi-position bases to adjust the height of the crib. A larger version, the Duetta Triplet Round, is on sale for $2,660.
  • The Little Miss Liberty Carousel Rocking Horse, selling for between $1,750 and $1,896, is a round crib with a hand painted replica carousel horse mounted to the crib, plus removable rockers.

Iron Cribs

  • For $1,190, the custom-made Addison Scroll Round Iron is decorated with detailed scrollwork, and is designed to be the focal point of the nursery. The crib is 46 inches in diameter, has a non-toxic finish and the round mattress is included. The same model with a canopy runs $1,590.
  • The Little Miss Liberty Aviary Round has tall posters to accommodate a canopy. It’s priced between $1,750 and $2,100, and it fits under an eight-foot ceiling. It has fancy scrollwork at the top of the dome, is 45 inches in diameter and weighs 194 pounds. Be warned: if you’re willing to pay the price tag, the marketer says this crib comes with double drop sides.
  • One of the highest priced iron cribs is the Corsican Versailles Garden Iron Crib, priced online for $2,960. The dimensions are 30 by 54 by 63 inches. Originally manufactured with a drop-side, modifications were made and it is now made with a fixed side.

Heart Shaped/Metal Cribs

  • The Little Miss Liberty Baby Dear Heart-Shaped sells for between $1,399, and $2,198. It comes with its own canopy kit and mattress. It has a multi-positional locking base for height adjustment and is formaldehyde-free. This crib also comes in a twin size for $4,398.
  • For a truly fancy effect, Little Miss Liberty makes the Crystal Round, for the fancy price of $2,899. Made of metal, the Crystal Round has plexiglass spindles to reflect the light, giving the appearance of a sparkling chandelier in the nursery. Again, despite the ban on drop-side cribs the marketer says this one has double drop-sides.

Take Care when Choosing an Alternative to a Crib for Baby

Most consumers searching for the right type of infant bed will choose a crib, but the alternatives to a traditional crib are Moses baskets, cradles and bassinets. Unlike cribs, Moses baskets and bassinets have no federal regulations to ensure their safety. Parents who prefer them have some safety tips to follow.

  • Just like when shopping for a crib, it’s best to buy bassinets and Moses baskets new, and avoid accepting hand-me-down heirloom cradles or bassinets. Looking for certification by the American Society for Testing and Materials and the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association, and checking for a recall history, will help make a more informed decision.
  • Using only the mattress and mattress pad provided by the manufacturer, and the fitted sheet specifically designed to fit the bassinet’s mattress or pad, will ensure the baby’s safety. Avoid using a pillowcase or different size sheet.
  • To protect against accidents, do not leave the baby unattended in a rocking cradle. Never use a bassinet with the wheels unlocked, or carry or move a cradle with the child in it.
  • Keep strings or dangling cords to blinds or curtains away from the cradle. Keeping the cords too short for the baby to reach, and positioning a mobile far enough above the bassinet so the baby can’t reach it, are similar to the safety tips for standard cribs.

The advantage to Moses baskets, bassinets and cradles is space-related, and they are convenient for parents who don’t have room for a full size crib. But taking into account how fast babies grow, these smaller baby beds won’t be in use for long before being retired. There are some features to compare.

  • Some bassinets can convert into a changing table, or even attach to an adult bed to make it into a bedside sleeper. Others can be used as toy boxes when the baby outgrows it.
  • Other bassinet models feature motion that full size cradles don’t offer. They can be converted into a cradle with a quick-release latch and retractable wheels, so the unit can rock or glide.
  • By their very construction, they are more portable than cribs. Some have handles allowing them to be carried and moved, while others have wheels like cribs.
  • Some mobiles for cradles and bassinets feature soothing music or heartbeat sounds with volume control, plus lights and rotating toys.
  • The canopy over the bassinet blocks the light and protects from the sun. Sometimes it’s removable, but avoid lacy or frilly canopies as they pose a strangulation hazard for the infant.

Thoroughly inspect the unit before buying, to make sure it has a sturdy bottom, a wide base, sides that are meshy but firm and folding mechanisms that lock into place. Bassinets and cradles are temporary infant beds with a short life span, and can only be safely used until the baby can roll over or begin trying to push himself up. The maximum weight most cradles, Moses beds or bassinets can safely hold is between 15 to 18 pounds.

When shopping for Moses Beds, cradles and bassinets, keep in mind that many Moses baskets are imported from mainland China. Measurements and dimensions will be in centimeters and kilograms, making it more difficult to compare with U.S. made beds described in inches and pounds. Ordering an infant bed online from an overseas manufacturer is one adventure many U.S. consumers may understandably want to avoid.

Convertible Crib  8/10

By

AFG Baby Daphne
The AFG Baby Daphne Convertible crib, billed as “perfect for the space conscious family,” is like two pieces of furniture in one. The Baby Daphne has a built-in changing table with three drawers and two shelves, which can be used later as a nightstand or dresser. Its non-drop side keeps it safe, and the crib has a non-toxic finish. Compared to other, lighter-weight cribs, this weighs a whopping 126 pounds, but that’s to be expected when you have two pieces of furniture in one

The price tag reflects the fact that it’s more than just the basic crib. It sells online for as little as $297 to as much as $544.99. Taking into account the price of furniture, the cost of this crib is not necessarily a drawback. The savvy shopper able to snag an AFG Baby Daphne Convertible crib in the lower end of the price range also gets a changing table and a piece of furniture with drawers and shelves at no cost.

Quick Specs

  • 72 inches x 41 inches x 30 inches
Strengths

Its construction enables it to double up on its versatility. Spending extra money on the AFG Baby Daphne doesn’t hurt the wallet as much, knowing you won’t need to spend any more on a changing table or a dresser.

The non-toxic finish keeps little babies safe when they tend to put their mouths on the crib.

It is JPMA and CSPC certified.

Weaknesses

For families trying to pinch pennies, the price of this crib is a budget-buster.

Unlike some cribs, this one has no casters to roll it.

Its weight, more than 100 pounds, requires two people to pick it up and move it.
