27” Electric Single Wall Oven  9/10

By

Whirlpool WOS51EC7AS Single Wall Oven
This single wall oven from Whirlpool is sure to satisfy the cooking and baking needs for an average household. The generous 4.3 cu. ft capacity is plenty for all sorts of dinners. Casseroles, roasts, and mulitple dishes won’t have trouble fitting here. Convection cooking is one of the key missing features here, but that also helps bring the price down to a more reasonable level. It’s not a major loss for those who are fine with a traditional oven. The self-cleaning feature is always a plus; additionally, with a hidden heating element, food won’t get trapped in hard-to-reach recesses. The extra large window on the front is an excellent addition as it adds to the attractiveness of the unit as well as making it easy to check on what’s inside. This wall oven isn’t necessarily cheap at around $1,200, but its fine quality and sleek design make it a more than great value.

Strengths

Convection fan is close to the back wall, leaving more space for dishes

Hidden heating element makes oven easier to clean

The Precise Clean keeps track of when the last self-clean cycle was run

Steam cleaning feature removes baked on spills with out chemicals and only water

Even baking and consistent temperature

6 rack positions

Weaknesses

No convection cooking

Wall Ovens Buying Guide

Gas vs. Electric Wall Ovens

Wall ovens are becoming increasingly popular, but many consumers are still torn on the gas vs. electric issue. Today both styles offer similar performance, so which one you choose depends largely on your preference and the kind of hook-up you have in your home.

Gas Pros

  • Retains the moisture in the food
  • Cooks efficiently

Gas Cons

  • Generally more expensive
  • Less selection
  • Requires a gas line and venting to the outside

Electric Pros

  • Less expensive initial price
  • Greater capacity
  • Greater selection to choose from

Electric Cons

  • Needs a 230/240 V connection to operate
  • Operating cost can vary based on electricity rates

Traditional kitchens always had a range unit with a stove on top and oven on the bottom, but today, households are increasingly looking into wall ovens paired with stovetops. Wall ovens offer several advantages over the traditional range units, which you should consider if you are buying a new home or upgrading your kitchen appliances.

  • Wall ovens can fit in smaller areas and maximize limited kitchen space. Standard sizes include 24”, 27”, and 30”.
  • You have greater flexibility in where you place the wall oven.
  • Wall ovens don’t require you to bend over to load and unload food. You can also view the food baking more easily because the window is more at eye level.
  • Wall ovens offer a stylish, contemporary look.
  • Double wall ovens are ideal for large families or people who like to entertain. They allow you to cook multiple dishes at the same time.

The Thermador MED272ES and the GE Profile PK956DR are two double wall ovens rated highly by customers. Both are 27” wide and electric. Both ovens offer great capacity, so if you have a large household and have to prepare large meals, or you simply like to cook, then you’ll find either of these wall ovens appealing.

The Thermador oven wins out when it comes to capacity, with 4.2 cu. ft. per oven. The GE oven has 3.8 cu. ft. per oven—still quite spacious. The Thermador model also offers convection baking in both ovens, while the GE model’s convection baking is limited to just one of the two ovens.

You’re paying top dollar for the Thermador oven—$3,999—but it comes with 14 cooking modes and telescopic racks that extend when you open the door. Speaking of racks, there are six adjustable racks for the Thermador oven. The GE, slightly less expensive at $2,056.15, is also generously equipped with five racks.

Style-wise, both the Thermador and GE ovens sport sleek and modern designs, with glass touch controls. Either will add style to a kitchen. As for performance, you’ll likely be happy with either oven. Choosing between them is a matter of determining whether you’re willing to pay extra for greater capacity, double the convection baking, and more cooking programs.

24” Electric Wall Oven  9.5/10

By

If you’re looking for an affordable, good-quality wall oven for a smaller kitchen, then you’ll be pleased with the Maytag CWE4800ACS, a 24-inch electric oven available for $894. This oven has a 2.8 cubic foot capacity, which is on the small side, but it’s ideal for an apartment or condo with limited kitchen space anyway. The oven has a clean, uncluttered appearance in easy-to-clean stainless steel. We were more than satisfied with the baking performance of this oven; it delivers consistent, even heating and offers a self-cleaning feature.

Strengths

Clean, attractive design

Intuitive controls

Good value

Great cooking performance

Ideal for apartments/condos

Weaknesses

Capacity not large enough for 14” baking sheet

Cool-down fan is a bit loud
