It may not be as efficient as a larger HE washer, but it gets the job done for those in need of a washer but don’t have the space. The washer works quietly and, with no agitator, is gentle on clothes. It would make a great, convenient addition to an RV.

With an extra-large 4.5 cubic foot capacity, most families can easily fit the whole week’s laundry in at once. The machine runs quietly and efficiently and even offers an EcoBoost option that maximizes its water and energy efficiency. We were satisfied with the eleven washing cycle options, which are clearly marked along the rear panel. This washing machine takes a lot of the work out for you with its automatic dispensers and auto load sensors that determine the load size for you. The Whirlpool WTW8000BW is available for $665.

With a tremendous 4.6 cubic foot capacity, the Maytag MVWB750YW is perfect for families with a seemingly neverending pile of laundry. It’s an HE washing machine, which means it has its own instructions and special kind of detergent required, but the results are great. It offers 10 washing cycles and spins clothes at 1,100 RPM, which wrings most of the water out of them before you put them in the dryer. This is much faster than many of the other dryers on the top load washer list. It only offers 2 different washing temperatures, so it is not as flexible like other washers out there. Keep that in mind if wash temperature is important for the clothes you wash.

Haier is recognized as a top laundry brand, and this top loading washing machine is no exception. Even with an agitator, it cleans clothes gently, without the wear and tear. It also operates quietly and smoothly. It’s got a maximum spinning speed of 630RPMs. This is not nearly as fast as some of the more expensive washers on the list, but it gets the job done. Clothes come out of washer feeling slightly damp. This means getting the clothes completely dry in the dryer should not take a very long time. We appreciated the clearly labeled, sturdy knobs, and the overall good construction. If all you need is a sturdy washing machine without unnecessary bells and whistles, then you’ll be pleased with the Haier RWT350AW.

With a tremendous 4.3 cubic foot capacity, the LG WT1101CW is perfect for houses with constant, heavy laundry needs. Its roomy stainless steel drum can fit bulky comforters, towels, and sleeping bags with ease. It has eight wash cycles to handle delicates, bright whites, and more. While the cycle times tend to run on the long side, we were very impressed with the washer’s gentle, quiet operation and with how clean and fresh clothes smelled when they came out. The spin cycle eliminates almost all of the water from the clothes before they even go in the dryer. At $629.99, the LG WT1101CW is a bargain for large households.

Both are extra-large drums, but let’s see how the other features compare.

Both models are Energy Star rated, guaranteed to save you money on your monthly energy bill. The Whirlpool model has the extra feature of an Eco Monitor that lets you track the efficiency of each wash cycle. Another eco-friendly option is the EcoBoost, which uses colder water and more spin to cut down on energy. We’ll give the Whirlpool props for giving consumers these options.

Both machines are incredibly efficient. The GE model includes technology that “communicates” to the dryer to preset the optimal drying time. With the high spins of both models, in fact, you can expect to cut down on your drying time, further saving energy.

The GE GTWS8450DWS has snazzy features and technology—such as steam—and a greater drum capacity. But you have to weigh whether that’s worth the extra $175. The Whirlpool Cabrio WTW8200YW is no slouch either when it comes to performance and energy efficiency.
