There are several different types of juicers that handle different functions. Centrifugal juicers are the most common and range from $50 to $200. Masticating juicers are quieter, heavier, and more expensive, typically running up to $350. Some of the most expensive juice extractors take wheatgrass and may or may not process fruits and vegetables; these juicers can cost up to $800.

As we compiled our list of top 10 juicers, we looked for a number of important factors, such as:

1. How much juice it yields
2. Pulp dryness (indicating minimal food waste)

Juicers Buying Guide

A Guide to Buying a Juicer

You’ve heard of the wonders of juicing and thought you’d give it a try. Who doesn’t like wholesome fruit and vegetable juice or healthy wheatgrass concoctions? As you begin your juicer search, though, you may be initially confused by all the different types of juice extractors and the different functions they provide. With proper research, you’ll better be able to select the juicer that fulfills your expectations and juicing needs.

Price

How much can you budget for a juicer? If price is an issue, then consider some of the inexpensive but general purpose centrifugal juicers. These models can handle most fruits and vegetables, are easy to clean, and have fast juicing power. A good centrifugal juicer can run between $50 and $200.

If you have more cash to spend and want an even higher-quality machine, then consider a masticating juicer. These large and heavy machines are very quiet, produce little heat, and preserve the natural enzymes and nutrients of fruits and vegetables, making for a healthier drink. They yield more juice, too. You can expect to pay up to $350 for a good masticating juicer.

How do you plan to use it?

Are you interested primarily in juicing basic fruits and vegetables? Centrifugal and masticating juicers serve that purpose quite well. Or are you more interested in leafy greens and wheatgrass? These kinds of food are high in fiber, which is difficult or impossible for regular juicers to handle. There are juicers made exclusively for wheatgrass, the most expensive variety.

Some juicers are even more versatile, capable of extruding pasta; grinding and processing food; and making ice cream, baby food, and salsa. You just have to decide how much you’re willing to pay for such special features.

Juicing efficiency

The most effective juicers waste very little food. They squeeze out the maximum amount of juice and nutrients and leave the driest pulp. Centrifugal juicers are quite effective at this process, and masticating ones yield even more juice and less foam.

Ease of use

Always find out how wide the feed chute is on a juicer. The larger the tube, the easier it is to feed whole fruits and veggies into the machine without having to chop them up first.

Also find out how well the filter works and how much the pulp collector holds. If you have to frequently stop juicing foods to clean pulp off the filter or empty out the pulp bin, it will slow down the whole process.

Motor power

For a centrifugal juicer, a powerful motor is a good thing. It speeds up the juicing process and yields more juice output. However, a high-speed motor also creates more foam in the juice and burns away the enzymes in fruits in vegetables. Masticating juicers use a slower-speed motor, which runs quieter, delivers cleaner juice, and produces little heat.

Ease of cleaning

Dishwasher-safe juicer parts will save you a lot of time keeping the machine clean and in working order. Sometimes the filter screen requires some hand brushing to get all the pulp residue off. Look for juicer models that are easy to put together and take apart.

The housing material also affects how easy it is to keep clean. Stainless steel is not only more durable and polished, it’s simple to wipe down with a cloth. Models with plastic housing can become stained over time, especially with foods like carrots and beets.

Read customer reviews to get an idea of how well a juicer runs, and look at different models in the store to get a feel for the design, size, and construction. Based on your needs and expectations, you should be able to find a juicer that has all the features and functions that will make it worth the price.

Fresh juice is an excellent way to get your daily servings of fruits and vegetables. Juicer recipes can be as complex or simple as you want and it is really fun to experiment. Sometimes something simple and classic is the way to go. Here we go through the classic apple, carrot, ginger juice. We used green apples to kick up the flavor a little but and balance out the spice of the ginger. We used enough ingredients for two drinks because sharing a fresh juice is a lot of fun.

Ingredients

  • 4 small or 2 larger organic Granny Smith apples – We cut the apples in half and removed the stems to make it easier to add them to the juicer. You may also want to remove the seeds.
  • 5 regular size or 10 skinny organic carrots – cutting the ends off of the carrots is a good idea and make sure there are no greens.
  • Fresh ginger root – this one is up to you. Add more to make the juice extra spicy or hold back to leave the juice a little more mellow
  • Once everything is prepare just put everything through the juicer one at a time. You can add more at a time if you have a larger, more powerful juicer. There is no specific order. Once everything has gone through, stir it up and pour your juice. Enjoy on the patio, in the kitchen, or on the go.

We used the Breville BJE200XL juicer to make Our green apple carrot ginger juice. It handled every thing without a problem and cleanup was a breeze. See it here.

10 RateThere are different juicers that perform different functions and yield varying performance results. As you shop for a juicer, you need to decide if you want a general purpose juicer for fruits and vegetables; a more versatile model that can make other foods like pasta, salsa, and baby food; or a juicer exclusively for wheatgrass and leafy greens. There are pros and cons to each type of juicer.

    Citrus juicer

As its name suggests, a citrus juicer is used exclusively for citrus fruits: lemons, oranges, and grapefruit.

    Pros:

    • The most inexpensive type of juicer, you can find one for as little as $20.
    • More efficient that wringing fruits by hand.
    • Lightweight, easy to assemble, and portable.
    • With little to no mechanical parts, it’s highly durable.

    Cons:

    • Limited to citrus.
    • Usually requires manual work.

    Centrifugal juicer

This type of juicer relies on centrifugal force to separate the juice and the pulp. The most common type of juicer, it handles all types of fruits and vegetables, simultaneously chopping them up with blades and straining the pulp from the juice.

    Pros:

    • Can be found for reasonable, affordable prices.
    • Easy to assemble and clean its parts.
    • Good general purpose juicer for beginners.
    • Quick and effective juice extraction.

    Cons:

    • With a high-powered motor comes a lot of noise.
    • Spinning produces a lot of foam and froth.
    • Juice contains fewer enzymes and nutrients.
    • Doesn’t process wheatgrass or leafy greens.

    Masticating juicer

Unlike a centrifugal juicer, the masticating kind literally chews up the food, extracting more juice and preserving more natural nutrients.

    Pros:

    • Works at a lower speed, reducing heat and foam.
    • Less oxidation means healthy, all-natural enzymes stay in the juice.
    • Quieter than centrifugal juicers.
    • Its single-gear construction makes it more durable in the long run.
    • Handles leafy greens.

    Cons:

    • Heavy and bulky models take up a lot of counter space.
    • Higher price.
    • Some models have difficult assembly.

    Wheatgrass juicers

Some people are interested exclusively in wheatgrass, a type of leafy green superfood. Wheatgrass juicers may or may not also process fruits and vegetables.

    Pros:

    • Juices wheatgrass, leaves, and herbs, which contain a lot of fiber that other types of juicers can’t handle.
    • Masticating process yields a high output of juice.
    • A cost-effective solution for people who just want wheatgrass and not fruits and vegetables.
    • The low motor speed means a nearly silent operation and juice that preserves its natural enzymes.

    Cons:

    • Some models require manual work.
    • Typically do not juice fruits or vegetables.
    • Very expensive and complicated to assemble.
    • Quite heavy.

    Masticating Juice Extractor  8.5/10

    By

Champion G5-PG-710For heavy-duty juicing work, you’ll be more than satisfied with the Champion masticating juice extractor. Built with solid, durable parts, it’s a heavy, large device best left sitting out on the counter. We found that we could insert large quantities of fruits and vegetables in the feed chute without having to stop frequently to clean parts or empty the pulp collector. The masticating process is powerful and effective but quieter than centrifugal models. While this Champion juicer doesn’t take wheatgrass, it’s well-rounded in other areas, able to create baby food, nut butter, salsa, and frozen treats. For $258.88, it more than makes up for its cost.

    Strengths

    Suited for heavy-duty work

    1.75-inch feeding tube

Requires little to no cleaning as it juices large quantities

Makes nut butters, homemade baby food, sorbets, salsa, purees, ice cream, and much more

    Instruction booklet included

Cleans in just a couple minutes

    Weaknesses

    Doesn’t process wheatgrass

    Large footprint and very heavy

    400-Watt Juice Extractor  7.5/10

    By

Waring JEX328A more than competent juicer for only $62.95, the Waring JEX328 has a shiny, durable stainless steel casing that won’t turn orange from juicing carrots or beets. Its exterior wipes clean easily with a sponge, and the main parts, the lid, juice container, pulp compartment, and strainer, all go in the dishwasher, although you might prefer to brush the strainer first. With an extra wide feed chute, you can fit in more large fruits and vegetables without having to cut them up first. This model does make some noise like most centrifugal juicers, but the cushioned feet absorb the vibrations and protect your countertop from getting scratched. Overall, we found this Waring juicer to be an efficient, quality machine with fairly easy cleanup.

    Strengths

Stainless steel housing resists food stains

    All parts are dishwasher-safe

Cushioned feet minimize vibrations and protect counter from scratches

    Wide feed tube

    Instruction book included

    Weaknesses

    1.1-Horsepower Juicer  7/10

    By

Hamilton Beach 67650For an inexpensive model, this Hamilton Beach juice extractor yields high juice results for the affordable price of $49. Simple to operate with an on/off toggle and a food presser that you push down, this juicer takes a few minutes to clean by hand, or you can simply put the parts in the dishwasher. The juice extraction works quickly, and hard, dry fruits and vegetables yield the most juice. Soft fruits, on the other hand, leave slightly wet pulp. The pulp bin is easy to clean out, but since it sits behind the juicer the machine takes up more space on the counter. However, for a general purpose juicer, it functions well and runs quietly, giving you great value for a reasonable price.

    Strengths

3-inch feed tube fits whole fruits and vegetables

Lid locks with sturdy die-cast metal latches

Includes cleaning brush and juice cup

Dishwasher-safe parts and removable pulp container

    Fast juice extraction

    Weaknesses

Pulp bin sits behind juicer, increasing the footprint

    Soft fruit yields moist pulp

    Single-Gear Masticating Juicer  9/10

    By

Omega J8005If you’re interested in an all-purpose juice extractor that handles wheatgrass and leafy greens as well as fruits and vegetables, then you’ll be happy with the Omega J8005. Relatively inexpensive for a masticating juicer at only $259.99, the machine’s juicing process works by chewing up the fibers in food, leaving precious nutrients and enzymes intact in the juice. Because it doesn’t rely on centrifugal force, there’s no foaming, either. The pulp comes out extra dry, and the auto-pulp ejection feature allows you to keep feeding the juicer without stopping to clean out the pulp container. Overall, it’s a highly versatile and effective juicing machine.

    Strengths

Low rpm motor means less frothing and clogging

Also functions as a food processor, pasta extruder, and grinder

Yields maximum juice and very dry pulp

    Quiet operation

Masticating process preserves the enzymes and nutrients in the juice

    Weaknesses

    Heavy and bulky

    Wheatgrass Juice Extractor  8.5/10

    By

Wheatgrass Juice ExtractorIf you are interested solely in juicing wheatgrass and don’t want to pay top dollar for a fruit and vegetable juice extractor, then the Hurricane Manual Wheatgrass Juicer is an ideal choice for $125.95. It assembles in just a few minutes and clamps to the edge of the countertop. You simply turn the crank to extract the maximum amount of juice from wheatgrass. The pulp that collects is very dry. Cleanup takes only a minute or two as you run the few parts under the faucet for a quick rinse. We were skeptical at first about a manual juicer, but really the crank turns so easily it hardly feels like work. Best of all, the stainless steel construction is built to last and the device is easily portable.

    Strengths

Simple construction means easy assembly and few parts to clean

    Stainless steel doesn’t rust

    Leaves pulp very dry

Hand crank is easy to operate

Extracts the most wheatgrass juice with no noise and quick cleanup

    Weaknesses

    Solely for wheatgrass

    Requires manual effort

Acme 5001A durable, albeit bulky, model from Acme, this juice extractor is built to last over the years with steady use. As with all juicers, it requires regular maintenance to keep it running at peak performance. The filter sheets need to be changed on a frequent basis or pulp build-up will block the juice flow. The 550-watt motor is powerful and produces little vibration, although the centrifugal force used to separate the juice from the pulp makes for a bit of noise. Altogether, it’s a solid little machine for $193.73 that produces sweet, healthy juice concoctions. A citrus juicer attachment, sold separately, is also a nice functional piece.

    Strengths

    Vibration-free induction motor

Blade and other internal mechanisms made of durable stainless steel

    Tough polycarbonate housing

    Dishwasher-safe parts

    Extracts juice through centrifugal force

    Instruction and recipe booklet included

    Weaknesses

    Heavy and bulky

Filter sheets must be cleaned or exchanged regularly

Jack Lalanne PJPA mid-range electric juicer from Jack Lalanne, this stainless steel model looks sleek and attractive on the counter and only costs $118.51. 400-Watt Juice Extractor  7.5/10

    By

blackanddecker je2200bOne of the least expensive juicers on the market at $29.88, this Black & Decker model nevertheless provides satisfactory juicing performance. You will have to remember that with only 400 watts, you can’t stuff it full of fruits and veggies and expect fast results; this juicer works best when you feed pieces in one at a time. It’s a slower process, and you have to cut food up before feeding it into the tube, but it still extracts a good amount of juice with minimal food waste. For a low-priced model, this machine runs quietly and efficiently and is great for light to moderate use.

    Strengths

Stainless steel cutter and strainer hold up to steady use

    Integrated pulp compartment reduces footprint

Custom juice cup with measurements and easy-pouring spout

    Dishwasher-safe parts

    Slip-proof feet

    Weaknesses

Small feed tube requires fruit and vegetables to be pre-cut

Juicer works best when pieces are fed in one at a time and slowly

    1,000-Watt Juice Extractor  9/10

    By

breville 800jexlA highly efficient juicer from Breville at $299.99, this model sits gleaming and powerful looking on the counter. Its looks aren’t misleading: the Breville 800JEXL has a 1,000-watt motor that extracts the most juice from foods, leaving whatever pulp is left very dry. With a three-inch circular feed tube, you can stick in whole carrots, tomatoes, apples, and oranges with little prep work chopping or cutting them into smaller pieces. There are two speeds to choose from, the faster one operating at 13,000 rpm. In the end, clean up is a breeze, and all the parts are safe for the dishwasher. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more effective juicer at this price and one you’re more happy to use on a regular basis.

    Strengths

2 speed controls: high at 13,000 rpm and low at 6,500 rpm

Die-cast steel housing for sleek, sturdy look

    Durable, dishwasher-safe parts

Extracts the maximum amount of juice, leaving dry pulp

3-inch circular feed tube fits whole vegetables and fruits

Juices foods quickly and is easy to clean

    Weaknesses

    Somewhat loud at highest speed

Some leaking may occur if too many items are fed into juicer at a rapid rate because the high speed uses so much force
