22.7 Cu. Ft. French Door Refrigerator  8.5/10

By

GE GNS23GGHBBThis French door, bottom freezer refrigerator from GE maximizes its space by giving you wide slide-out shelves and adjustable door bins in the fridge and two access bins in the freezer. While the freezer may claim a bit of the space you would expect to see in the fridge, there’s still ample space in both compartments. The clear LCD display helps you monitor the temperatures. We liked that the water dispenser is on the inside, leaving the exterior with a clean, uncluttered look. You can occasionally hear the ice dumping into the dispenser, but the noise is not so loud as to be aggravating. As for its exterior appearance, we liked the rounded edges and hidden hinges. For an energy-efficient refrigerator with a clean, modern look, this GE refrigerator doesn’t disappoint. It’s available starting at $1,340.

Strengths

Energy Star rated

3 slide-out shelves and 5 adjustable door bins

Clean look with hidden hinges

Good freezer layout with lots of space (but not too deep)

LCD display shows you internal temperatures

Freezer includes a fast-freeze shelf

Inside water dispenser allows for a clean exterior design

Weaknesses

Deli tray compartment seems somewhat flimsy and difficult to pull out

Ice maker can be noisy

Freezer on the small side

22.6 Cu. Ft. French Door Refrigerator  7.5/10

By

Frigidaire FGHF2344MArranging food in this French door Frigidaire refrigerator becomes easier due to its four sliding glass shelves and six adjustable door bins, which can hold gallon jugs. Space is split fairly between the fridge and freezer compartments, giving you flexibility. The full-width drawer in particular holds large, wide platters, sheet cakes, and other items. The features you’d expect from a high-end refrigerator are here: a child lock, door and temperature alert, and express select controls. With easy sliding shelves and drawers, great space and organization, and sleek design, this Frigidaire refrigerator impresses all around with its quality. It’s available for $2,051.

Strengths

Counter depth saves kitchen space

Ice dispenser lets you choose cubed or crushed ice

4 slide-out glass shelves and 6 adjustable door bins

Child lock

Alarm alerts you if temperature rises or door is left open too long

Sleek design and quiet operation

Fresh ice and water filtration system

Shelves contain spills

Weaknesses

21.6 Cu. Ft. French Door Refrigerator  8/10

By

LG LFC22770STFor kitchens requiring a 30-inch refrigerator, this LG French door fridge is an excellent choice. The bright LED lighting makes the interior look glowing and inviting. While the two glass shelves are stationary, they stretch across the width of the fridge, giving you lots of space. Tall items like milk and juice containers fit best in the door bins. For a fridge with such a small footprint, it makes the most of its reduced capacity. The bottom freezer makes it easy to access food with its two baskets. We liked several of the design features, such as the door alarm that keeps you from letting out too much cold air, and the digital temperature control. This modern-style LG refrigerator is available for $1,599.

Strengths

2 fixed glass shelves and 6 adjustable door bins

Small footprint

Energy Star rated

Door alarm reminds you to shut the fridge door

Ideal for small kitchens

Maximizes its limited capacity

Weaknesses

Fitting in tall items can be awkward

IQ Touch 22.6 Cu. Ft. Capacity  8/10

By

Electrolux EI23BC36IFor kitchens with limited space, this counter depth refrigerator from Electrolux fits nicely and still has the modern style that’s all the rage these days: French doors and a bottom freezer. The capacity of both compartments is ample enough; the fridge has five adjustable door bins for storing condiments. The glass shelves are sturdy and look much nicer than plastic or wire. If you favor the clean exterior with no ice dispenser, then you’ll appreciate this refrigerator’s sleek design. When we opened the French doors, we were very satisfied with the ample lighting and thoughtful organization. Similarly, the freezer makes it easy to access food with two gliding baskets than span the full width. This Electrolux fridge is available for $2,399.

Strengths

Freezer has 2 gliding full-width baskets

4 removable glass shelves and 5 adjustable door bins

Clean, blank exterior

Counter depth makes it ideal for kitchens with limited space

Ample space

Nice multilevel lighting

Weaknesses

Ice maker bucket sometimes overflows

Glass shelves don’t slide out

No child lock

Both the GE GFSF6KKY and the Electrolux EI23BC36I are refrigerators in the popular modern style with French doors and the freezer on the bottom. This arrangement makes it easy to see and grab the foods you use most without having to lean over. By comparing the two models, we can see a couple noticeable differences that may sway you toward one or the other.

The GE refrigerator has a great 25.9 cu. ft. capacity. We feel that the 8.17 cu. ft. freezer doesn’t detract too much space from the fridge, but you may feel differently when you open the French doors. The fridge compartment is quite wide, and the four slide-out glass shelves and six adjustable door bins give you some flexibility. This GE fridge has a width-long deli tray compartment at the bottom of the fridge, built to hold large trays or sheet cakes. Some people like this compartment, but others feel that it’s too limited in its usefulness and takes up precious space for taller food items.

The GE GFSF6KKY French Door Fridge

The Electrolux refrigerator is counter depth, meaning it has slightly less capacity (22.6 cu. ft.), but it also fits better in kitchens with limited space. The four glass shelves are adjustable, but they don’t slide out, which may make reaching foods in the back difficult. It also has just five adjustable door bins. While you’re losing a couple cubic feet of space, you still have enough flexibility to arrange the shelves to your preferences.

Another big difference between the two fridges is the external ice dispenser on the GE model. These ice dispensers have their proponents and detractors. Yes, it’s easier to fill up glasses with water or ice without having to open the door, which lets out cool air and makes the fridge work harder to bring the temperature back down. But if you have children around, then you know they like to play with it, which can get messy. And some people prefer a clean, blank exterior on their fridge. It’s simply a matter of preference. The Electrolux model has that smooth, unbroken exterior, but some consumers complained that the ice maker bucket occasionally overflows, which could be a design flaw.

The Electrolux EI23BC36I French Door Fridge

Surprisingly, the refrigerator with the smaller capacity costs more: $2,399. The larger GE fridge costs $1,776.72. Take into consideration, also, that the GE model has a year energy use of 552 kWh/yr. The Electrolux model is more energy efficient, operating at 467.2 kWh/yr, so you’ll save a bit on energy costs over the course of a year.

So is one fridge hands-down better than the other? The GE refrigerator wins when it comes to price and capacity. If you’re buying a fridge for a large family, you’ll love the extra spacious interior. However, the Electrolux is more energy efficient, and if you prefer a blank exterior, you’ll be happier with the Electrolux over the GE model.

Viking VCFF136SS French Door RefrigeratorThough smaller capacity-wise than some others at only 20 cu. ft. this good looking pro Viking fridge has the bottom freezer top french door degisn that many desire in today’s market. The 24 inch depth design may be integrated into a current cabinet design – and as we have seen those slimmer profile refrigerators may cost more for that reason. One thing we particularly like about this unit is the internal water filter and dispenser. This is especially effective those those with kids that persist in spraying water everywhere from outside door dispenser systems.

The 3 Year parts and labor manufacturers warranty is definitely something to consider. Viking is standing behind the product. Moisture adjustable produce drawers are something rare as well. Viking had some reliability issues with a prior model – the VCBB363L bottom freezer unit. There were many complaints about the compressors and let’s just say that Viking has learned a lot since then. Still, this unit will not be one of our top editors choice fridges until we can get enough feedback over time.

Strengths

  • Internal Water Filtration and dispensing
  • Temperature adjustable drawers add flexibility
  • Good Looking
  • 3 Year Warranty really stands behind the Mississippi build

Weaknesses

  • Rollout drawer under twin bins, problem with tracks and potential breaking
  • Smaller capacity storage for price
  • Reliability issues with former fridges from Viking make us a bit apprehensive
