At around $3,199, this is a very expensive combo oven from KitchenAid. The fact that it blends in with surrounding cabinetry is a big plus for a stylish kitchen. A extra touch of design is seen with smooth beveled edges and matching wide viewing windows. The KEMS379BSS’ oven and microwave both offer convection that really goes the extra mile for making food tasty and delicious. The oven does tend to take a while to preheat, but cook times are faster and food bakes evenly. The oven’s cavity is quite spacious at 4.3 cubic feet. That means you’ll be able to fit multiple pans at once. Best of all, the control panel is ergonomically designed and easy to program. The oven’s self cleaning features work very well too. This is a top performing oven and microwave combo, but the price is really where it loses points.

If you’ve been shopping for a new microwave, you’ve probably noticed some more expensive models that offer convection cooking. If you’re like me, you may have initially wondered what convection microwave ovens do and why they’re pricier than standard microwaves.

Put simply, convection microwave ovens use a fan to circulate hot air inside the microwave, browning and crisping food at lower temperatures. Other benefits of convection cooking include:

• Faster baking and roasting
• Keeping meats juicy instead of drying them out
• More evenly cooked food

The theory behind convection cooking goes like this: With hot air constantly blowing on food, not just surrounding it, the food tends to cook faster. The chemical processes that occur when food cooks also become quicker; thus, pastries turn out flakier, meat retains its juices, and vegetables have a crispy outside and moist, flavorful inside. Also helpfully, convection microwave ovens cut down cooking time by about 25 percent.

As anyone who has ever baked cookies in a conventional oven knows, the cookies can vary in consistency based on whether they were on the top rack or the bottom rack. Convection ovens eliminate that inconsistency, evenly browning food no matter where it’s located in the oven. With hot air circulating evenly throughout the oven interior, you’ll get food baked or roasted uniformly and won’t have to worry about those tricky hot or cold spots with each mouthful.

The control panel lights up with a touch, but only the selected cooking setting remains highlighted on the display. We were pleased with how smoothly the racks slide out with a ball bearing system, and having three adjustable racks makes baking multiple items in the oven easy. It cooks dishes evenly and includes a steam clean option for convenient self-cleaning. We were impressed with the construction and design of the oven, too; the racks slide out smoothly for easy loading and unloading of dishes. The preheat works quickly, too, cutting down on energy costs. We were also pleased with the convection cooking capabilities of the oven; the oven automatically converts the cook times for convection. An attractively designed combination wall oven, the Whirlpool WOC54EC0AS boasts a superior cooking performance with its even and quick heating. We were pleased with the extra-large capacity of the oven and microwave, which makes preparing meals for big holidays a lot easier. The controls are conveniently placed at the top, but we confess it will take time to become accustomed to all the features of this combination oven. Still, the oven makes it easy to keep clean; its heating element is hidden, leaving smooth, wipe able surfaces, and the SteamClean feature lets you clean the oven without any harsh chemicals.
