Tennis Racquets Buying Guide

A Guide to Selecting a Tennis Racquet

Whether you’re a beginner, an intermediate, or an advanced tennis player, you should understand the basic principles behind tennis racquets and what makes one suited to a special kind of player. It can be daunting trying to select a tennis racquet due to the number of brands, sizes, shapes, and prices to choose from. Whenever possible, you should handle the racquet in person before making a purchase because each player operates at a different skill level and has a unique feel for the racquet.

You can judge a racquet by the size, stiffness, length, and weight of the frame.

  • A large frame provides great power and is less likely to twist in your hand when you hit balls off-center. The larger the frame, the larger the sweet spot, or area of the strings where you’re least likely to feel the impact of the ball.
  • A stiff frame also delivers great power and a bigger sweet spot. It helps distribute the impact of the ball across all the strings, giving you a uniform, solid-feeling response.
  • The longer the racquet frame, the greater speed you’ll get when you swing it. The greater the velocity, the more power and spin you’ll get in your shots. A long racquet is also good for increased leverage and control. Racquets range from 27 to 29 inches long.
  • A heavy frame, while difficult to wield for long periods without wearing out the arm, produces the greatest power. It yields a large sweet spot and also transmits fewer vibrations.

Also consider the head, or hoop, size. Racquets range from about 85 to 135 square inches.

  • Beginners and intermediate players typically thrive with large-headed racquets. It’s easier to make shots even when the ball hits the racquet off-center, and you get great power due to the large sweet spot.
  • Advanced players look for greater control with a small-headed racquet. Because of their advanced skill, they’re able to provide the power in the swing.

Weight and balance directly affect the unique feel of the racquet. They can either be heavier in the head or in the handle.

  • Head-light racquets are preferred by most professional players because they offer the greatest maneuverability and control. Again, advanced players supply their own power, so they don’t need to rely on a heavy head to punch the shots.
  • Head-heavy racquets are designed to be lighter overall without taking the weight and stability from the head. They’re still powerful, but some players complain that they don’t feel as solid as the traditionally balanced racquets. Others worry that lightweight racquets cause more tennis injuries because they transfer more vibrations through the player’s arm.

The string pattern has an effect on how the ball impacts against the racquet. Strings can be in either an open or closed pattern.

  • Open string patterns feel loose and deflect the ball more upon impact, producing a great spin. However, these type of racquets require more maintenance because the strings are less durable and prone to breaking.
  • Closed, or dense, string patterns produce less spin but provide greater control and durability. Look for racquets with a dense string pattern if you hit the ball hard with a topspin. You also won’t have to replace the strings often.

Pot Racks Buying Guide

The Benefits of the Pot Rack

Whether you’re hoping to organize your kitchen, clearing out the clutter from your cabinets, or you’re a fanatic cook, then you should consider a pot rack. Pot racks have long been a convenient kitchen accessory that gives you more space in your work area and yet keeps your cooking tools within easy reach.

Convenient access

Do you wish all your pots, pans, and utensils were in plain view and easy fingertip reach? It’s a hassle having to dig through drawers for that one ladle or pull out all your stacked pots to find the medium sized one you need. A pot rack provides quick and simple organization. Because you can see all of your tools, it’s easy to grab the one you need right away.

Saving space

We’ve all experienced the joy of opening up the cabinet and having a bunch of haphazardly stacked pots tumble out on the floor. Your kids have probably discovered the fun game of pulling them out, too. If you have limited cabinet space, then a pot rack can be a lifesaver. It also helps clear the counter and drawers of your most-used utensils. You’ll appreciate having a clean, tidy workspace without sacrificing easy access to your favorite tools.

Visual appeal and design

Because they’re displayed so prominently in the kitchen, pot racks come in a wide variety of styles, materials, and designs. An attractive pot rack can be as elegant as it is functional, in such materials as wrought iron, wood, distressed steel, nickel, or pewter. An added benefit: If you’re a devoted chef and proud of your collection of fancy cookware, then you’ll love showing them off to visitors. A pot rack can add class, style, and hominess to any kitchen.

Wine Glasses Buying Guide

How Wine Glass Shape and Size Affects the Taste of Wine

You’d be surprised to know that experts have studied how the size and shape of wine glasses affects the taste and smell of wine. There’s a reason that there are a variety of glass shapes for different types of wine—each type enhances that wine’s special qualities.

You’re not only enhancing the taste of wine, but also the visual presentation. The right glass, with clear, brilliant clarity, shows off the rich color of the contents within. You feast as much with your eyes as with your mouth and stomach.

The shape and size of a wine glass determines how much of the surface of the wine is exposed to air. The level of oxidation, or exposure to air, has a subtle but noticeable affect on the chemicals within the wine that determine its taste and aroma. If the bowl of the glass is large enough, you can swirl the wine around to bring out all the flavor and smells.

Whites and Reds

But why are there different glasses for red and white wines? You can find all-purpose glasses that work for either kind of wine. They feature a tulip-shaped bowl that’s large enough for swirling but tapered enough to concentrate the bouquet.

However, wine connoisseurs appreciate a smaller version of the tulip glass for white wines. Whites generally don’t require much exposure to air, and the narrowed openings of white wine glasses keep the bouquet contained within and also help preserve the chill.

Full-bodied red wines benefit from aeration. The large burgundy glass features a large, open bowl that also makes an impressive presentation of these rich wines.

And of course, there’s also the champagne flute that you see at fancy occasions and New Year’s Eve parties. The long, narrow flute preserves the bubbles of champagne and also helps keep the drink chilled.

Rim, Stem, and Thickness

Even subtle qualities of the wine glass enhance the drinking experience. When the rim of the glass is thin and even, it directs wine to the right areas of the tongue for a full appreciation of the flavor. Depending on how wide the opening of the glass, the wine will either emit or retain its bouquet. Remember, reds generally require a glass with a wide opening, and whites taste better when the bouquet is concentrated in the glass.

The stem is also important, and not just for functional purposes. Yes, you hold the glass by the stem, so it should be long enough to be gripped comfortably. Doing so prevents the heat from your hand from altering the taste of the wine (yes, it has an effect).

With a stem firmly attached to both the bowl and the base, the wine glass should be sturdy enough to swirl the wine around. Thick glass is good for durability, but only at a minimum. The thinner the glass, the more you can appreciate the visual presentation of the wine.

Stick Vacuum Cleaners Buying Guide

The Pros and Cons of Stick Vacuums

If you have a small home or apartment, then a stick vacuum is a viable alternative to the full-size vacuum cleaners that take up more space and cost much more. Stick vacuums are ideal for spot cleaning floors. Don’t buy one expecting it to handle thick carpets or to vacuum an entire house in one go. They’re built for cleaning small spaces.

The Good

  • Ideal for sucking up hair, dust, crumbs, and dry messes on hardwoods and rugs.
  • Extremely lightweight and compact, typically weighing less than 10 pounds.
  • Many models come with removable handles to convert them into handheld vacs.
  • Include many of the tools found on full-size vacuums, like crevice tools and brush rolls.
  • Quieter than full-size vacuums.
  • Available for low prices.

The Bad

  • Not built for vacuuming rooms of wall-to-wall carpeting.
  • Don’t handle thick carpets very well.
  • Dust cups have smaller capacities, requiring frequent emptying.

Ultimately, stick vacuums are convenient tools for cleaning the top surface of floors. If your home has mostly hardwoods or tile, a stick vacuum is especially useful.

Best Smartphone Accessories

The Best Features to Have in a Smartphone

Nearly everyone these days carries around a smartphone like an additional appendage. It’s no wonder. These hi-tech phones have nearly as many functions as a PC, and they’re lightweight and easy to flip out of a pocket to perform any function, whether it’s searching for a pizza parlor or video chatting with a faraway friend.

So if you’re looking for a smartphone, it’s worth going over some of the best features you’ll probably want in your model. The more fancy features you have, of course, the higher the price.

Camera

Most smartphones have a rear camera with 5 to 8 megapixels; some offer as many as 12 MP. Some smartphones have an additional camera in the front that lets you view yourself as you take a self-portrait shot or participate in a video chat. If you plan to use your phone to document important moments in your life in place of a digital camera, then look for a smartphone with great photo clarity and editing options.

Wi-Fi Connectivity

Smartphones with 3G, or wi-fi connectivity, allow you to browse the web wherever there’s Internet access. Whether you’re using your phone for work or pleasure, there’s no denying how convenient it is to pull up your email, look up the weather, or watch YouTube videos.

GPS

So many people are dependent on GPS these days that it’s hard to find your way around without it. Wherever you are, a smartphone’s GPS system can let you search for nearby shops or restaurants or show you your way in unfamiliar cities.

Large Screen with Great Resolution

If you want to stream videos or view photos on your smartphone, then you may wish to spring for a fancy model with a large screen and high resolution. Screens are measured diagonally, and some of the bigger ones are well over 4 inches. Remember that the larger the screen, the larger the device will be, so view phones in person to decide whether it’s too bulky to carry around comfortably.

Applications

While smartphones are highly functional devices capable of organizing your contacts and keeping track of your email, they’re also cool gadgets, or grown-up toys. You may soon find yourself hooked on apps and games that help pass the time. If these features are important to you, then consider phones with a wide selection of apps to download.

Tablets Buying Guide

How to Choose the Tablet that’s right for You

Screen Size/Portability
This one is obvious. How large a screen do you need or want. A few considerations for this category might be:

  1. What will I be carrying my Tablet in and Where? Will a 10” Tablet fit comfortably?
  2. How much typing will I be doing on the keyboard and what size keyboard fits my needs best?
  3. What will be my primary purpose for the tablet? E-mail? Surfing? Apps?

Android, Apple, or Other
This has become one of the hottest debates in the Tablet world. Tablet users must decide which Apps they want to be able to choose from. Reputedly Android and Apple have the best choices for Apps so this is a consideration in making your decision. If you do not plan on accessing or downloading many Apps and the Tablet will be used mainly for portable Internet and e-mail then you can get better prices with Tablets like the Nook or Blackberry for your money.

Sound Quality
A much overlooked feature, sound quality is important to many people. Will you be hooking ear bud speakers up to the tablet and listening to music constantly or accessing videos online? Sound quality should not be overlooked.

Processing Power
How fast does the tablet touchscreen respond to your requests and how fast does it load pages, Apps and programs? Processing power is determined by the quality of the operating system built in the Tablet and is an important determinant in speed.

Storage/Memory
Are you planning to download music, videos, pictures and movies to the tablet? These all take memory and storage capacity. Price is usually closely associated with how much memory the tablet contains. For instance the iPad has 3 price levels depending upon how much memory you want. However, there are discounts to be had in this area such as the new pricing on Blackberry Playbook tablets with lots of memory.

Price/Value Considerations
Obviously this is an important feature for many and is usually determined by storage capacity, functionality, design, weight, depth, processing power, popularity and brand. Out of favor Tablets may be purchased at a deep discount, so this may be the best way to search if this is a primary factor for you.

Features like Cameras
Do you plan on using your tablets camera function often. Tablet make it easy to take pictures, view them at a considerable size and send them – all in one device.

Battery Life
Obviously we all enjoy more battery life in our devices so this feature is obvious.
