Wine Cooler Buying Guide

The Best Features to Have in a Wine Cooler

As you shop for a wine cooler, you should consider more than just the number of bottles it will hold. Whether you drink wine casually or have several fine wines you want to preserve, there are wine coolers that will protect your bottles over time and those that won’t. Look for these features to find the wine cooler that’s best for you and your collecting needs.

Capacity

You don’t want to spend a great deal of money on a wine cooler and later wish that you had bought one with a greater capacity. Consider how many bottles you’re saving for a long period of time and how many you have for regular consumption. Whatever that number is, allow for an increase in your collection.

Racks

Since many wine coolers’ racks are spaced tightly together, adjustable shelves make it incredibly easier to store large or unusually shaped bottles. Vinyl-coated racks are better than chrome wire ones, and wooden shelves offer extra sturdiness. Find out if the racks are fixed or adjustable, and whether you can slide out the shelves to view your selections.

Door

While most wine coolers feature a glass door because it’s attractive in style, exposing your bottles to light can having damaging effects. If you select a cooler with a glass door, look for models with double-paned glass for extra insulation and UV protection. Don’t leave the interior light on full-time, either. It looks pretty to have your wine collection lit up, but your bottles don’t need the extra heat.

Locks

You may not even think about the security of your wine unless you have nosy guests or teenagers frequenting the house. A good lock on the cooler door can keep someone from accidentally opening that priceless bottle you had saved for retirement.

Vibrations

If your wine cooler vibrates, even a little, it can cause the sediment in the bottle to interfere with the wine’s aging process. Many wine coolers claim to solve this problem with thermoelectric technology, in which the only moving part is the fan. Short of that solution, coolers with padded racks will help protect your wines from vibrations.

Durability

A wine cooler’s durability is perhaps the greatest consideration you should make, along with price. A cooler may look snazzy and be low in price, but if it’s not a reliable model you could end up with a broken machine and damaged wine. Better to invest in a more expensive, reliable cooler and set your mind at rest knowing your collection is safe than to save a bit on the initial price and risk a disaster.

Riding Mowers Buying Guide

4 Ways to Mow Really Tall Grass

Does your lawn resemble a jungle? Either you’re blessed with fast growing grass, or you’ve neglected your mowing duty for too long. In either case, if you don’t have a riding mower, you may have to do double the work to take care of the problem.

  1. First, try mowing on the highest height setting. Wait a couple days before mowing the yard again at a normal setting.
  2. Is the grass too stubborn or is your mower not up to the task? If mulching doesn’t work, try bagging the clippings.
  3. If the mower keeps clogging, try a narrower strip, say 6 to 12 inches, with each mowing pass.
  4. If all else fails, set your mower to side discharge. You’ll have to rake up the clippings afterward, but at least you’ll have tamed the jungle.

Now that you know how much extra work is involved in cutting tall grass, you’ll be motivated to keep up with a regular mowing schedule.

By

The following list of the best top ten golf balls was determined from the authors opinion using the following criteria: Consistency in length off the tee, spin control and the ability to hold greens, “feel” of the ball around greens for chipping and putting, durability, and price/value. Combining a ball that’s long and straight off the tee with little spin, a ball that’s soft and controllable around the greens, and a ball that really takes spin with short irons is the ultimate challenge for golf ball manufacturers. See the golf ball comparison and ratings below with a link to the full review of each.

Golf Balls Buying Guide

How to Buy a Golf Ball
Matching Golfer Skill with Golf Ball Build

Dimple Design and Construction
There are many considerations when determining what type of golf ball you will buy and play with. One is dimple design. The number of dimples as well as the design can help you gain distance (or lose distance for balls with older technology). The size and shape of dimples and well as depth all play a part in how far and accurately the ball flies. One design flies farther, another straighter, and still another a mid loft, and another at low loft. Then there’s the roll on the greens. One roll purer and straighter than the other.

Layer Construction
Here we are talking about the number of layers in the construction of the golf ball. It could have 2 to 5 layers at present. The higher the number of layers in the ball construction the more the ball typically costs and the more feel and design is implemented. The simplest balls with 2 layer construction – though much improved – are more for beginning golfers and will cost less. Higher layer construction balls like the ProV1x and Callaway i(s) give golfers more flexibility with varying swing speeds.

Spin Slope and Spin Control
In golf, how much spin the ball creates from impact has a lot to do with how straight it flies through the air. Higher spin slope balls are designed with better golfers in mind and will spin more with lower irons and with lower impact speeds. They also contain a soft middle core that when compressed by higher velocity shots from higher swing speeds reduces spin to allow for more distance and straighter ball flight. Lower spin slope golf balls will travel straighter and longer for lower swing speeds and be more consistent with lower velocity shots. However, they are typically harder around the greens depending on the cover. Essentially the more spin there is on the golf ball, the less far it travels because spin is creating some resistance.

Here’s a little table to help you decide which ball is right for you:

Generally…

More limited attributes in the golf ball = less layers of construction = Less Expensive golf ball
More distance plus feel = more layers of construction = Higher price golf ball
Lower Handicap Golfers generally prefer…

  • High distance, high control
  • Less durable and higher priced golf balls
Higher Handicap Golfers generally prefer…

  • Lower Cost Golf Balls
  • More consistency with lower swing spin, harder shell for distance

Budget Washing Machine Buying Guide

How to Select the Right Washer

There are at least five main factors you should consider when picking out your next washing machine: the washer’s durability, performance, efficiency, and affordability, and your washing needs. If you know what to look for in a washing machine, you can avoid some of the common mistakes buyers make and find a product that satisfies your laundry needs for years to come.

Durability

Nothing’s more frustrating than buying a machine that works fine for the first year or so, and then starts to fall apart conveniently after the warranty expires. Know before you buy a particular brand if there is a service company in your area that can fix your washer should it someday have problems. Read up on the model, including customer reviews, to be aware of any red flags. Sometimes it’s better to go with a trusted model that’s been on the market a few years than to risk purchasing a brand new, expensive washer with lots of fancy features that are prone to breaking.

Performance

How well does a washer actually clean laundry? Again, read reviews before making your final choice. Customer reviews are usually good about lavishing praise where it’s due and forthcoming about any flaws. Do you need a washer that can handle big, bulky loads, gentle on delicates and tough on highly soiled garments? Look for performance features that match your specific laundry needs.

Efficiency

Everyone is concerned about energy efficiency today. Not only are efficient washers better for the environment, they help you save on your electric bill. Compare the EnergyGuide stickers on different models to see which is most efficient: the lower the EnergyGuide rating, the more efficient the machine. Also look for Energy Star label, which indicates a washer meets or exceeds the government energy standards. Both top load and front load washers have highly efficient models that help conserve water and energy.

Affordability

How much you should pay for a washer depends on the level of quality you expect from the machine. The least expensive models, with only the most basic features, typically run from $250 to $350. Modestly priced machines that can handle the laundry needs of most families can cost up to $700. The priciest, most sophisticated models with advanced features and high efficiency usually exceed $1000. Decide how much you can budget for a washer and figure out which washing features you will actually need and use. Be aware that the cheapest models are generally the least efficient and roughest on your clothes, and avoid washers with only one water level, as these waste the most water.

Know what you need

Your laundry habits and family size determine what kind of washing machine you should buy. A person living alone who only does a few loads a week has very different washer requirements than a family with several messy children and pets. Don’t pay extra for frills and features you won’t use. Look instead for a reliable, high performing model that conserves water and energy at a reasonable price.

Gas Ranges Buying Guide

Gas vs. Electric Ranges: The Pros and Cons of Both

If you’re shopping for a new stove, you’re probably wondering whether it’s better to have a gas or an electric range. With today’s competitive appliance market, you’re in luck: Both styles are highly effective and not too far apart in quality. There are just some minor differences between gas and electric ranges that you should consider before you make a purchase so you get a model that meets your specific cooking needs. Here’s a break-down of the major pros and cons of each type of range.

Gas Range Pros:

  • With a gas range, you have more precise control over the cooking temperature, which is this style’s main advantage over electric ranges.
  • Its sealed burners are easy to clean when spills occur.
  • A gas range is most practical in areas that rely on propane or natural gas as a source of power.
  • Many models have an electronic ignition to light the burners, saving them trouble with matches.

Gas Range Cons:

  • They are typically more expensive than electric ranges, costing anywhere from $75 to $200 more than a comparable electric model.
  • Installing a gas line to a house also costs a significant amount of money.
  • Some people are leery of using gas because of the risk of carbon monoxide leaks. Also, the pilot lights are highly flammable and need to be shut off during vacations.

Electric Range Pros:

  • An electric range is typically less expensive than a gas range and offers many of the same features.
  • An electric range with a solid ceramic or glass top makes it easy to wipe up spills.
  • Most homes already have a 240-volt power supply necessary for an electric range, and they are relatively inexpensive to install.
  • An electric range has no risks associated with gas or pilot lighters.

Electric Range Cons:

  • While many top models are precise, an electric range is generally less precise with heat than a gas range.
  • An electric range does not have the same toasting and roasting functions as a gas range.
  • Electric range models with coil burners are harder to clean; their drip pans become dirty and grimy with frequent use.

While there are advantages and disadvantages to both gas and electric ranges, many of the best models have similar performance and special features, such as a self-cleaning option. Ultimately, your choice boils down to your cooking preferences, your budget, and your feelings toward gas versus electricity.

Budget Microwaves Buying Guide

Microwave Oven Technology: How They Work

For an invention that’s only been around in the last century, microwave ovens are incredibly efficient. For one, they heat only the food, not the oven, using considerably less energy than other cooking methods. Also, their most appreciated benefit is that they heat food in just a matter of minutes.

The machine releases microwaves, a type of radio wave, at a frequency of 2,500 megahertz. Fats, sugars, and water absorb these microwaves, a process that produces heat. The radio waves in a microwave oven cook food by entering the food and interacting with the fat and water particles. People commonly believe that microwave ovens cook food “from the inside out,” but this is not exactly the case. Food is cooked evenly throughout and instantaneously, not from the outside in as it does in regular ovens.

Of course, there are exceptions. Thick pieces of food may not cook all the way through because the microwaves cannot reach to the very center. Sometimes food gets hot or cold spots because something interferes with the radio waves.

Unlike traditional ovens, microwave ovens do not typically brown food or give it a crust because the temperature inside the microwave does not change. That’s why snacks like microwavable pastries often come in a sleeve with a foil lining. The metal reacts to the radio waves by getting hot, which gives Hot Pockets and Toaster Strudels their flaky, crusty exterior.

Microwave ovens may not have the capabilities to fully bake extravagant or gourmet meals (yet), but they’re still a modern convenience that we’ve come to love. Nothing else makes reheating last night’s leftovers or popping popcorn easier or more efficient.

Over the Range Microwaves Buying Guide

How Convection Microwave Ovens Work

If you’ve been shopping for a new microwave, you’ve probably noticed some more expensive models that offer convection cooking. If you’re like me, you may have initially wondered what convection microwave ovens do and why they’re pricier than standard microwaves.

Put simply, convection microwave ovens use a fan to circulate hot air inside the microwave, browning and crisping food at lower temperatures. Other benefits of convection cooking include:

  • Faster baking and roasting
  • Keeping meats juicy instead of drying them out
  • More evenly cooked food

The theory behind convection cooking goes like this: With hot air constantly blowing on food, not just surrounding it, the food tends to cook faster. The chemical processes that occur when food cooks also become quicker; thus, pastries turn out flakier, meat retains its juices, and vegetables have a crispy outside and moist, flavorful inside. Also helpfully, convection microwave ovens cut down cooking time by about 25 percent.

As anyone who has ever baked cookies in a conventional oven knows, the cookies can vary in consistency based on whether they were on the top rack or the bottom rack. Convection ovens eliminate that inconsistency, evenly browning food no matter where it’s located in the oven. With hot air circulating evenly throughout the oven interior, you’ll get food baked or roasted uniformly and won’t have to worry about those tricky hot or cold spots with each mouthful.

Microwaves Buying Guide

How Your Microwave’s Wattage Affects Cooking

Visiting the appliance store, I found a wall of microwave ovens of all sizes and colors, countertop, combination, and over-the-range models. For someone looking for a new microwave, the wide spread of choices could be staggering. A helpful salesperson explained some of the key features to consider when buying a microwave. “I would pick any model that has at least 1,000 watts,” he said. Any microwave with less than 1,000 watts won’t have the heating power to justify the space it takes up.

The microwaves on display ranged from 600 to 1,200 watts, with most falling above the 1,000-watt mark. Surprisingly, even top-performing models with powerful cooking power are reasonably priced. The knowledgeable salesperson explained that microwaves in general have come down in price over the years; families can get quality models for reasonable prices. The fact that buying a microwave is not as big a financial investment as it once was is certainly good news. I decided to research more about microwave wattage and how it affects heating food.

How many watts a microwave has determines how long it takes to cook food. The higher the wattage, the faster food heats up. The instructions for microwaving food are usually geared toward a 800-watt microwave. If your microwave has 1,000 or more watts, you may need to adjust the cooking time to avoid burning or overheating your meals.

It’s also important to know the microwave wattage for food safety reasons. No one wants a cold, undercooked meal. Not only does it not taste as good, but it may contain harmful bacteria if not cooked and stored properly. You can typically find your microwave’s wattage in the instruction manual, inside the door, or on the back serial number label. If those methods fail, there’s a simple test you can use to estimate how many watts your microwave uses.

The time to boil test: Measure a cup of cold water in a clear glass and set it in the microwave on high for four minutes. Watch through the window to see when it starts to boil.

Boils In Wattage
Less than 2 minutes 1000 or more
2 ½ minutes 800 to 1000
3 minutes 650 to 700
3 minutes or more 300 to 500

For the best performance and efficiency, look for microwaves with at least 1,000 watts. Even a wattage of 800 is considered high, though. If you go any lower, you’ll be sacrificing time and performance for a few saved bucks: not worth it in the long run.

By

We found that the best food processors possess some important factors and convenient features, including:

1. Durable stainless steel blades that won’t wear down or become dull
2. Easy to disassemble parts that are safe for the dishwasher
3. A sturdy base that can be easily wiped clean
4. Slicing and shredding discs
5. A wide feed tube that fits large foods easily

What size food processor to buy depends on your family size and how regularly you plan to use the appliance. Singles and couples may be satisfied with a miniature model that holds just a few cups of food. Larger families should look for large-capacity food processors, some of which can hold up to 14 cups of food. Also consider how much you’ll use the food processor as you look at models with various special features and wattage levels: Don’t pay extra for features or power you don’t need.

Food Processor Buying Guide

Features to Look For When You Purchase a Food Processor

A food processor can save you lots of time and work in the kitchen. Today’s most versatile models offer chopping, grating, slicing, grinding, mincing, and pureeing features: essentially doing everything that you would otherwise have to do by hand. High-end models even have convenient accessories and features, like juicers and reversible slicing discs.

What’s extremely important, however, is that you carefully consider how you plan to use your food processor. The last thing you need is to spend all that money on an appliance that just sits on the counter taking up space and collecting dust. The happier you are with the food processor’s functions and capabilities, the more likely you are to use it on a regular basis. Here are some factors to consider as you shop for the perfect model.

Bowl Capacity

You don’t need the biggest bowl available if you have a small or average size family. Medium-size food processors, which hold up to 7 cups of food, are usually adequate. Only spring for the largest size if you have a huge family, cook in large quantities, or regularly entertain company.

Stainless steel blades
This is a must-have feature. Stainless steel is the most durable and effective material when it comes to blades. They are strong enough to slice through even the toughest foods and won’t rust or wear down. Consider models that offer multiple blades for added versatility.

Wattage

The higher the wattage, the more powerful the food processor. The most expensive models cost so much because they have enough watts to quickly and efficiently pulverize any type of food. If you plan to use your food processor heavily, don’t buy a model with less than 750 watts or it just won’t last as long as you’d like.

Versatile functions
The more functions a model performs, the more value you’ll get out of the appliance. Food processors often come with various blades, discs, and other accessories that cover a range of functions. Some save you even more time by performing several functions at once. You should feel comfortable that you’re getting your full money’s worth with a food processor. See if the manufacturer has additional discs and blades for purchase.

Juicing

If you are a fan of fruit and vegetable juice, consider a food processor with handy juicer accessory.

Dishwasher-safe parts

Keeping the food processor clean will be so much easier if you can simply throw the bowl, lid, and blades in the dishwasher. Check to see if a model has any small crevices that could trap food and require extra brushing or cleaning.

Warranties
Read the warranty details carefully to see if a manufacturer will replace or repair a faulty model. Sometimes a replacement part is all that’s necessary, but be sure that it won’t cost almost the price of a new machine.

Coffee Maker Buying Guide

Water Filtration

Good, clean water and how it tastes has a definite impact on your coffee. An extra water filter is a good choice for your coffee maker especially if you don’t have a water filter on your whole home or kitchen tap. If your water already tastes good, there’s less of a need for a water filter in your drip coffee maker.

Whole or Ground Beans

If you want to have the freshest coffee taste, most experts will argue that whole beans ground the same day will produce the best result for a cup of coffee. Several coffee makers do come with their own grinding machine for consumers wanting to have their beans ground on demand. Luckily for us today, there are also plenty of ground beans roasted to perfection and then ground and packaged that can be used in your drip coffee maker to produce nearly the same quality cup.

Thermal or Glass Coffee Carafe

One area that is under consideration for consumers who like to drink coffee most of the day, the coffee carafe will also be an important part of that consideration. Thermal coffee makers can be a bit more expensive and will keep coffee hot and ready-to-drink for many hours without any burnt coffee taste.

The Right Coffee Machine

Finding the right machine may seem overwhelming given the thousands of options. The ten drip coffee makers we rated and present here cut through the clutter. Once you figure out which elements are most important to you – from single cup to 12-cup makers, to water filters and programmable options, the perfect machine will pop out. Of the top ten, we also rated one for best price, one for best value and one for best quality. Final machine choice is ultimately up to you.

Breadmaker Buying Guide

So you’ve decided you want to experience the joys of making homemade bread and smelling it bake in your kitchen—now you need to select a breadmaker. It’s nice to know that there is a wide selection of quality models ranging from only $50 up to $300 or more.

Functions and programs

Which breadmaker you choose depends on what you expect from the machine:

  • Do you want the ability to experiment with various types of bread, such as whole wheat, multigrain, gluten-free, sweet, baguette, French, Italian, or banana bread?
  • Are you interested in using a breadmaker to bake cakes or prepare dough for pizza and pasta?
  • Would you like a machine that also makes non-bread items like meatloaf and jam?

Most breadmaker models today come pre-programmed with baking modes or settings that allow you to make a wide variety of breads. You just need to follow the recipe and instructions for mixing the flour, yeast, and other ingredients to get mouthwatering results.

Design and controls

Breadmakers don’t differ wildly in style, but you may find that you prefer one with a large viewing window and a bright LCD display that highlights your programming selections. Even if a breadmaker doesn’t possess a window, that shouldn’t disqualify it. Some people argue that a breadmaker offers more even heating and crispier crusts without one.

Size and shape

How large is the family you’re baking for? If you’re single or one of a couple, you can get by with a small model that makes a 1-pound loaf, which yields about 8 slices. For a larger family, you’ll probably want a model that makes loaves up to 1.5, 2, or 2.5 pounds. A 2.5-pound loaf provides roughly 20 slices—more than enough to satisfy a family for several days.

Whether a loaf comes out horizontal or vertical doesn’t affect the taste, but you may have a preference for one or the other. A tall slice from a vertical loaf may be more difficult to fit in the toaster.

You also need to think of size in terms of the machine’s footprint. If you’re going with a big breadmaker, will you be content to let it take up a lot of counter space, or will you okay with lugging it out of a pantry for each use? Smaller models make smaller loaves, but they’re also easily portable and don’t take up much more space than a toaster.

Noise

The kneading and baking a breadmaker performs is a very involved process, but you probably don’t want a machine that rattles and dances across the counter. Check up on reviews to get an idea of how much noise it makes.

Cleaning

As with any kitchen appliance, cleaning the breadmaker is the least fun part. However, if the machine is equipped with nonstick, removable parts, the task becomes much easier. Some models have a detachable lid that gives you better access to the inside cavity. Note which models have dishwasher-safe parts and which require hand-washing.

Instructions and recipes

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a breadmaker that doesn’t come with an instruction manual and recipes. If possible, browse through the manual before making a purchase to see how comprehensive the directions are. Do they walk you through each baking mode? Do they tell you how long each kneading cycle lasts? Do they offer clear recipes for a wide variety of breads, cakes, and jams?

If the manual leaves something to be desired, there are plenty of breadmaking books available that are all-encompassing. Beth Hensperger’s “The Bread Lover’s Bread Machine Cookbook” is a widely popular choice, featuring over 300 step-by-step recipes.
