Budget Tripod  7/10

By

Sunpak 620 Digital Camera TripodThis is going to be the overall budget option for the tripod list. This is a far from fully featured tripod, but it would be a great choice to someone who is not sure if they will actually use a tripod. It is very lightweight, so bringing it on a photo excursion and not utilizing it would not be a tragedy. It has bubble levels built-in for the sake of convenience while out in the field. One of the biggest drawbacks is the very low weight capacity. It will max out with some of the smaller DSLRs with small lenses or any of the bridge cameras on the market. This tripod can be had for $18.99 to $23.99.

Quick Specs

  • 58.3” height
  • Supports up to 4.4 pounds
  • Leg braces for stability
  • Flip lever leg locks
  • 2.8 pounds
Strengths

A great beginner’s tripod

Very inexpensive for the performance this one is capable of

The quick release mount makes it easy to get the camera on and off the tripod without unscrewing it

20 to 58 inch range will be plenty for just about any need

Weaknesses

Doesn’t have the solid construction seen in more expensive tripods

Mini Point and Shoot Tripod  7.5/10

By

Joby Gorillapod Micro 250 Camera TripodJoby came up with a very unique design to address a very specific problem. Point and shoot users are less likely to carry any sort of tripod, even if it is a relatively small tripod. What should a point and shoot user do to fix this problem? Attach the GorillaPod Micro and you’ll never be without a tripod again. This lightweight and very small tripod is design to be with you at all times and provide stability on most surfaces and terrains. It isn’t going to replace the usefulness of a full blown tripod, but it will provide the point and shoot photographer peace of mind. The GorillaPod Micro 250 can be found for $14.95 to $19.95.

Quick Specs

  • Supports up to 8.8 ounce cameras
  • Zinc alloy legs for durability
  • Always-on tripod
  • 0.9 ounces
Strengths

Very small and lightweight

Inexpensive

The rubber feet are a nice touch to keep the tripod from sliding

Much better than setting the camera on a flat surface because you can point the camera in the direction you need

Weaknesses

Only useful in a handful of situations

The bolt that connects the tripod to the camera feels weak

Flexible Tripod  8/10

By

Joby Gorillapod Hybrid Camera TripodIf you have a smaller camera and keep finding yourself in situations where you need to stabilize your camera or even want to be in the photos yourself, this is the tripod for you. The standout feature here is the fully adjustable legs. You can wrap the legs around a small branch or a chair leg and achieve the stability of a tripod standing on the ground. It’s a really neat idea with some cool real world applications. The head has a 360 degree pan and a 90 degree tilt for further adding to the usefulness in real world situations. Joby threw in a quick-release with a bubble level to seal the deal on this unique tripod for smaller cameras. You can find this tripod on sale for $28.97-$39.95.

Quick Specs

  • 2.2 pound load capacity
  • Jointed legs let you mount this camera almost anywhere
  • Quick-release with bubble level
  • 10.1” height
  • 6.4 ounces
Strengths

Flexible legs let the photographer mount their camera just about anywhere

The unit is very lightweight and compact, perfect for traveling lightly

The bubble level really helps in awkward positions

Weaknesses

Holds cameras up to 2.2 pounds, so it is really only good for point and shoots and cameras slightly bigger

May be a little overpriced for what it does and its size

Flexible Tripod  8/10

By

Joby Gorillapod Focus Flexible Tripod with Ballhead XThis tripod from Joby is a bit of a step up from some of the others on the list. This one is focused on high end cameras instead of point and shoot cameras. The biggest difference is the ball-head mount. This allows for very specific adjustments to get the exact image you are striving for. The flexible legs allow you to mount this camera virtually anywhere you can think of. The head allows for 360 degree panning and 90 degree tilting. It is a light tripod, but it doesn’t compete with others in how much it can support. The GorillaPod Focus with Ballhead X sells for $149.95.

Quick Specs

  • Supports up to 11.1 pounds
  • Ball head for precise adjustments
  • Universal mounting plate
  • Over two dozen leg joints
  • 1.1 pounds
Strengths

The number of positions that this tripod can take is limitless

The legs can wrap around poles and handrails to get some unique angles not accessible to regular tripods

The ball head makes adjustments extremely exact

Very lightweight

Weaknesses

Pretty expensive for what it is

The unique design is not the best for every situation, sometimes a standard tripod would work best

Ravelli Professional Stand Tripod
The Amazon Basics tripod is exactly that. A very basic tripod that will have no trouble getting most jobs done and it comes at a very cheap price. The Multi-Angle Central Column is extremely flexible and offers a great amount of security no matter what the angle is set to

16.1 MP Digital Camera with 5x Wide-Angle Optical Zoom  7/10

By

Sony DSC-W170
This Sony digital camera is a great little point and shoot model that takes sharp, bright photos. The body is nice and compact as well. We were amazed by the sweep panorama mode, which let us create a panoramic shot by pressing the button and sweeping the camera around. For a relatively inexpensive $90, this camera has enough special features to get a lot of versatile out of it. The shutter speed is not as fast as it could be, making it hard to capture objects in motion where you want them, but blurriness is at a minimum. Overall, its compact size and picture quality make this a valuable camera purchase.

Quick Specs

  • 3 Colors Available
  • 2.7-inch LCD screen
  • 16.1 MP
  • 5x wide-angle optical zoom
  • 8.6 ounces
  • 4.3” x 3.2” x 2.4”
Strengths

26mm lens with wide-angle zoom

Sweep panorama mode captures 268 degrees as you press and sweep

Image stabilization reduces blurriness

Automatic mode chooses best settings for you

720p AVI movie mode creates PC-compatible films, and is a great addition to such a cheap camera

Face detection and smile shutter technology get the best shots of people

Weaknesses

Shutter speed is slow for action shots

Rechargeable battery life is short

No zooming during movie mode

16 MP Digital Camera with 24x Optical Zoom  8.5/10

By

Olympus SZ-15
The Olympus SZ-15 compact digital camera has an impressive optical zooming spec of 24x. This means you can get super clear shots from very far away. It really blows a lot of the other cameras out of the water in this respect. Even some of the digital zoom specs can’t touch it. This iteration also has a 25mm lens, so you can go just a bit wider than before. You to point and shoot rapidly without a lot of lag time in between shots too. This is important for those who like to snap away. It is fairly slim and lightweight, the curved handle is easy to grip and the 3-inch screen provides a sharp preview of your images. The 720p HD video mode is quite smooth and clear, but there’s no zooming available. For a sleek, high quality camera with excellent zooming, $190.99 is a reasonable price.

Quick Specs

  • Colors: Black, Red
  • 3-inch LCD screen
  • 16 MP
  • 24x wide-angle optical zoom
  • 8 ounces
  • 1.6” x 4.2” x 2.7”
Strengths

25mm with 24x wide-angle optical zoom gets close and far-off shots in clear focus

Intelligent auto mode takes a lot of guess work out of shooting situations you are uncertain of

3D photo mode

Slim and portable

Takes multiple shots in a row quickly

Weaknesses

Auto focus is slow

Included battery charges only through a USB

720p video recording is a little lacking compared to all the 1080p cameras out there

Canon ELPH 330 HS
An easy-to-use digital camera from Canon with excellent HD video recording capabilities and wifi built in, this model is amazingly priced at $199.99. 1080p HD video recording combined with optical zoom is sharp and smooth. It is easily going to fit in any pocket, purse, or backpack. The stabilizing feature reduces shaky, blurry shots, and the HS system allows you to shoot in the dark with no flash and no grainy noise. Overall, this Canon offers a ton of special features for such a great price.

16.0 MP Digital Camera with 16x Optical Zoom  8.5/10

By

Canon SX160 IS
Canon has a great reputation for beginner digital cameras. This is a perfect example. You get a sturdy, durable, and compact digital camera that features a 3-inch LCD screen. Having to manually lift the flash is a nifty feature because there are many times when we don’t want the flash to automatically fire. Its 16.0 MP and 16x optical zoom produces sharp, clear pictures whether you’re close up or far away from your subject. The dedicated movie button is big and another convenient feature. This makes it so you don’t have to go searching through menus for the option to start recording. For $149.95, this is a superb all-purpose digital camera with great speed and intuitive controls.

Quick Specs

  • Colors: Black and Red
  • 3-inch LCD screen
